Plenty of other countries with a very low cost of living that you can retire to that don't have the dangers Mexico does.

I am sure there are other options. We like Mexico and thus why we picked it. Danger did not make it to my "concerns" list as there is a risk of danger everywhere. Just being alert mitigates most of those concerns.

Why in the heck would you overlook the States?! Are you running from the law? The US and Canada for the most part are light years superior to an industrial third world nation like Mexico. The cartels run Mexico . . . lots of luck.

  • @stevenkasower8705

Mike, thank you for sharing your perspectives on this subject. My view is that your concerns are fairly universal no matter where you folks may move in retirement that would move you away from your present cultural and physical milieu. Even, for example moving to Phoenix Arizona or Boca Raton Florida would present similar "assimilation" challenges. Mexico presents both excitement and very specific challenges. Easiest would be the language challenge. This would be temporary as you folks would assimilate and learn to communicate with locals. In retirement learning a foreign language is a dazzling hobby! More of a challenge is to remember that even when you folks find those leafy greens for salad making, living too far from the agricultural activities wherein those crops are grown presents increasing challenges the farther away from larger cities one chooses to domicile. Lastly, leafy greens need to be washed (even in our towns, mine in California). Washing leafy greens or anything in Mexico presents a unique challenge due to the water treatment (or lack of it) situation in water supplies (even in larger Mexican cities). You probably would not drink a glass of tap water in a cafe in Mexico (bottled water is virtually everywhere there), so washing veggies and fruits must be accompanied by methods easily learned on line (like adding a touch of vinegar to the "soaking" water then drying. After all, we certainly cannot undertake all veggie washing in Mexico using bottled water! Good luck with your move. I believe that all your concerns will melt away and you folks will live dazzling lives ahead.

Anytime a country gets a socialist president like this one just elected, things will get screwed up and the apple cart will be turned over...so to speak. If the damn left would just get out of politics and let the market run the market economy, things could be decent everywhere, but the left just can't stop being the left.

I don't understand . The Mexican peso is weak relative USD right now. The exchange is around 18 pesos to the dollar now. In May 2024 it was around 16 pesos to the dollar. That means its a better deal for Americans to go to Mexico now. Of course prices have increased in Mexico, as they have in the USA , so this may wipe out any benefits in a better exchange. But I think you have everything backwards. Its currently a weak peso and a strong USD. The peso weakened exactly at the time of Claudia Sheinbaum's election victory. Probably over fears of her socialist agenda. In the USA rent has increased on average 40% since 2020.. You would a have seen a 20% increase between 2020 and 2024 in Mexican rent. You would be much better off renting in Mexico than the USA.

Hola Mike y Laura! When I moved here a few years ago the going rate of pesos to one US dollar was around 20 to 1. My basic living expenses are around $18,000mx per month which translated to $900us at that time. Before the recent weakening of the peso to the dollar up to 18.33 as of today (29/6/24) it had gotten down to 16.5 meaning my basic cost of living had gone up to $1090.90us per month, making it go up by an additional $190.90us per month! That was lot more than some people could comfortably handle even though it was still far more affordable than where I lived in a pricey area of So.Cal.where my basic living expenses were close to three times of what they are now. Today $18,000mx at 18.33 means my basic living expenses just decreased by $108.91us to $981.99us but it's still $81.99us more than when I initially moved here a few years ago. I had planned for a bigger budget than I actually needed along with exchange rate fluctuations so an additional few hundred dollars here or there wasn't going to make a break my bank account but for a lot people who didn't budget for that felt it was too much, mistakenly making Mexico "Too expensive to live here anymore!!" Even though it is still much less than where they were coming from. Some people move here and think because it's so affordable they spend their money like drunken sailors on shore leave and blow through their budget! You have to remember as far as being able to take advantage of high exchange rates not a lot of people have tens of thousands of dollars laying around to do so. I took advantage of the recent rise with what money I could. Because of numerous mitigating factors I believe it will stay between 18 and up to 19 pesos to one US dollar. It could go up even more and then I would have lost money with the gamble! Either way it's still a very cost effective move for people on a fixed income if you are able to budget correctly and it's the best thing I have ever done for myself. I love living here and I believe you will too! I tell people who are still on the fence and considering a move here to not wait or the time will never seem to be just right! Practica tu Espanol! Mucha suerte desde la hermosa Ensenada!🤷‍♂😎🏄🍍🥥🥑🌮🍯

So the project management in me says start with you end date (the date you plan on arriving in Mexico) and work backwards from that. Purging should be continuous. From you get to Mexico by date figure out how much time it's going to take you to get to Mexico. How much your going to pack and how your going to get to Mexico. Pets will need a great deal of consideration because you'l have to stop and walk them. You'll need pet friendly hotels if you don't have a professional service transport them for you. Timing of the sale of your house is important. If selling you'll need to guess how long it will take to sell. If you sell early maybe you can rent back to save possibly having to move to another place before moving to Mexico. There are a lot of moving parts so you may need to develop a plan B if plan A isn't working out or at least a plan A-1. You've given yourself a lot of time but don't become complacent and let things slip. Develop a time line working backwards from your be in Mexico by date. Allow for some flexibility in that plan. -Marc

Dyson are trash but with that said. I have similar thoughts as you. My wife and I are both nurses and she is from the Philippines. We are planning on retiring there in 8 years when I’m 55 and she is 53. We are investing aggressively but I keep going back and forth so we keep our home in the states. It is valued now at 350k and will be paid off in 7 years. Do we sell and add that to our portfolio? Hard question to answer but it is nice to be in a place where that is our tough decision and not which flavor of cat food we will eat because we didn’t plan

Miele all the way - they do cost more, but, they do seem well worth it - our first one was going on 15+ years (until it was used to vacuum up some salt water… long story, but cats and wine were involved…) - replacement going on 10 years so far…. Costs can be managed, and, hopefully, one isn’t so close to the edge that replacement will sink you - don’t retire - the stress would be too much. Your discussion is a good topic though - we’re retired, and it is great!

I have a Dyson and a Shark. My Dyson still works well. Paid about $500 for it in 2012. The reason it still works well is because I used the heck out of the Shark, which was purchased around the same time. I work away from home and needed the Shark so I could clean where I lived for work. But even at home, the Shark was the workhorse. I purchased them both in 2012. The Shark did 95% of the cleaning. I just replaced the Shark with another Shark in March 2024. Still have the Dyson and it still works well.

I wonder what went wrong with your Dyson. I have used them since they first were available generally in the UK, and continue to use them here in the USA (they weren't available here when I first emigrated!) If the motor is playing up, then it really needs attention, but if other parts go wrong then those machines are really very easy to fix.... and parts are quite easily available online too. I have had to replace little bits over the years. Often there are more filters in those machines than people are aware of, and they really do need cleaning or suction goes down dramatically. Thing is... just about everything that can go wrong with Dyson's (bar the motor itself) can be remedied quite easily by most people and if parts are needed to be replaced, they are really not too expensive! Retire and then you'll have time to wade through RUclips DIY presentations that will explain how to fix most things. Haha!!! I have three Dysons (three floors here) and have only ever had to ditch one machine in the past whilst living the the USA (24 years). They really are very simple machines, but with great engineering.

We have 2 of the latest dyson animal vacuums. My life loves it - easy to use, does a better job and having 2 (one on each level) makes it easy for her to a quick vacuuming every day. Every other day when she empties them, she swears she could put together another cat. We had the previous version that broke. I consulted youtube and bought the necessary part for $30. We gave that one to our niece and she says you would have to pry it out of her cold dead hands to take it away. Dyson's prices are outrageous. I think the durability issues are due to the amount of plastics they use to keep the weight down. I'm OK with the purchase - happy wife etc.....
