Welcome to Scott Berry's RUclips channel of many musical memories! I was the late Dr. David L. Walters' last & final arranging & applied music student at Jacksonville State University and a trumpet player in the famous JSU Marching Southerners. I also was a high school band director, custom marching band arranger and member of the rock-&-roll horn band, "The DownTown Horns". I hope you enjoy the unique material here on my RUclips site! Feel free to subscribe.

Do you have video of the Fiesta Bowl of 1995?
The drum majors were fantastic😊. The band was huge. Simply awesome!
Unique wonderful Marching Band back then as well as today.
Awesome
Awesome 👏
Thanks for the memories, Scott. I loved that show!❤
I was actually there and have this on VHS tape. It was The Heart of Dixie Marching competition! ❤
I was with the Sound of the South that year was a good show I miss those JSU rival games!
I tell people about playing the song backwards and they don't believe 🙂
PRIDE!
Cool hearing us playing this with a decent sounding recording. I don’t think I’ve heard this recording of is from fall 1985. Only seen a couple videos of that season and the audio isn’t usually great quality from video back then.
I don't know what his name was but I remember showing up at one of their off-field rehearsals and the upper lead trumpet player was screaming out triple C notes while smoking a cigarette at every moment he was not playing with the group. I'll never forget that.
I played E flat bass in this band in 63
This is that James Sammons DIFFERENCE!!! MAN could he command a band!!!!!
Look how big the band was then!!!
Where's the video?
Sean Srigley tearing that field up
Thanks Scott. I marched 78-79. Trumpet line. WIsh there was more 70's media around. I remember we were filmed and recorded a good bit.
Dad was in the Southerners in 63 and 64. Thank you for posting this. He passed away yesterday morning listening to Southerners on RUclips. My son is a freshman and in the Southerners.
Thank you for posting :)
We played this in Oxford High several times in the 80’s. Always a favorite
This was the show that convinced me to be a Southerner. When they played Malagueña, and those 20Js played the bass line I was sold. I was a sax rat starting in 79.
I was in the the Troy State Band then!!! I loved every minute of it
Thanks for the post. I was marching trumpet line then. Still get chills.
I’m on baritone.
I was in The Marching Southerners 1961-1965. Freddie Pollard was drum major in 1961. Skip Pittman was drum major in 1962. John Armstrong was drum major in 1963, not Freddie. His tempos on "Stars Fell" and the "Exit Fanfare" (as we called it) were always a bit slower and broader at the end than the ones on the recording. Freddie came back as drum major in 1964 and continued through 1965 or perhaps 1966. I have a recording that Dr. John Finley made either in 1964 or 1965. It was made on either a Roberts or Sony open-reel recorder. The next recording was professionally done in 1966 and issued as an LP. This recording was made outside behind the back of Mason Hall and caused somewhere around 50 cakes baking in the Home Economics Dept. to fall!
🤮🤢
They’re in FBS and it’s final.

My dad played tuba in that recording!!!! How did you find this?? Wow!
Thank you Mr. Berry
Thank you for reminding me i didn't hate high school as much as i thought. Band saved me!
I LOVE THIS!!!!
These videos mean a little more now…R. I.P Scott! Thank you for everything
Guys i am a band student from Scott Berry. He runs this channel but he sadly passed away today. R.I.P Scott Berry 🕊️
Love this…wish there had been video…
Love a good horn section!
Thanks! We did too!!!
Dreamer felt awesome to perform as a freshman in 1980.
Scott, Juan Tyson here: This was my first year marching with Southerners. Thanks for sharing this amazing performance and memory for me.
Thanks, Juan. Hope you’re well!
Scott Berry The closing Fanfare gave me chills. and I am a TSU Band Alumni !
I think I am correct as I was in the TROY band, The two bands performed a pregame show with JSU playing the National Anthem and TSU playing "Alabama" the state song. There was a big rivalry back then, . As we marched into the stadium the Troy band was pelted with cups of ice and various other things. Those were the days as we say.
I marched in that show.

Oh how i miss ❤️
Wish they would put this on either Apple Music or Spotify.
I miss Uncle Dave so very much!
Dang good high school band. Sounded like they were mature professionals.
Thanks very much. We had a very good symphonic band, despite the fact that (being down south where football is the tail that wags the dog) we placed most of our primary emphasis on our marching band more so than on our concert band program.
Nobody could write a “gut-bucket”, Dixieland-style countermelody like Uncle Dave could. He was the master. Still is in my book. Nobody better than him at this. Genius!
We really played & sang this song pretty well. The 1/2 step key change toward the end is tricky, but neat.
I love it.
Back when drums actually & really sounded like DRUMS ….. and not like 2 bricks or concrete blocks being slammed together.
