Given the fact that Lyapunov wrote his etude more than half a century after Liszt had written the final version of his set of 12 etudes, literally as an hommage to Liszt by whom Lyapunov was inspired his entire life, I really don't know what that is even supposed to mean. Having said that, this is of course a wonderful etude, and I'm pretty sure Liszt would have loved it!

I would agree with you to some extent. Lyapunov is really a hit or miss composer, which goes for Liszt as well. It sets them apart from the greatest like Chopin and Scriabin.

". . . which goes for Liszt as well" ??? And then going on as far as ranking Scriabin with Chopin? That is insane. In terms of sheer poetry on the piano Liszt was at the very least the equal of Chopin, if not surpassing.

@@peterchan6082 Have you listened to Scriabin’s music? The first half of his output is perhaps better than most of Chopin’s compositions for the piano. And Liszt is much greater than Chopin. Chopin is still one of the top 5 greatest composers of all time imo.

@@Xyriak Although some Liszt pieces are quite mediocre, he belongs in the same tier as Chopin and Scriabin for piano works.

What constitutes the same level as Liszt? I think you just don't like Lyapunov's works as much as Liszt's, which is fine.

I think it's alright. However, I think that it is rather dry and lacks the clarity and power of Noack's and even Scherbakov's interpretations.

As it should! Lyapunov was not only a close friend of Balakirev, the man who composed Islamey, but they both often wrote pieces inspired by traditional folk songs from the Caucasus region in southern Russia. Both were commissioned to gather folk songs from that region, so you can clearly see where the influence came from.

@@none5020 Good luck brother. Having quickly played through most of these etudes, I can say that this is likely the hardest one (if not tied with no 9 or 11), but sounds super satisfying when it's pulled off!

yes. this is a recording of Florian Noack. to be fair, there's much harder piano music out there. some people are just THAT good.

@@ismailshtewi8560Florian’s and KonstantinScherbakov have both recorded the full etudes. I think they’re the only ones to have done that so far.

@@jean_c_santos Vencenzo Maltempo has also recorded the complete set, although I do not like his interpretations as much as Noack's or Scherbakov's.

@@Xyriak That's good to know. I've enjoyed Maltempo's playing of Scriabin and Listz. I listened to Scherbakov's interpretation of these etudes for over a decade until learning of Noack's. Will be fun to respectfully compare the 3
