Painting with Acrylics - Episode Three
In today’s video we add the third layer of paint, we are now including opaque paints in the mix, white and buff titanium which is a key stage in the development of the painting
The reference is a scene from divis and black mountain in Northern Ireland.
I am painting on stretched canvas using a mixture of Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic paint and Windsor & Newton Galleria acrylic paint.
I used very cheap flat brushes bought from a local store that are larger than normal so that I can spread the initial wash.
The palette is disposable tear off version.

Using Watercolour - Single Colour Scene - Ballycastle, Northern Ireland
Thank you for showing your creative art process, enjoyed video found it interesting and informative.
I am learning to love the flat brush as well. So versatile indeed. Thank you!
Wonderful how this builds up. How many more layers do you plan to do? And do you always do the same amount of layers roughly?
I think another one or two - I don’t tend to work at acrylic so slowly, more often than not I just keep going until I’m finished which is normally an hour and a half or so..
Ich komme mit den Stiften nicht klar, leider. Man sieht die Striche der Stifte und kann sie nicht vollständig vermalen. Die Farben sind allerdings sehr leuchtend, aber nicht zu vergleichen mit echten Auqarellstiften.
We are all different. I LOVE that the lines remain. Thanks for watching and commenting
I love the new intro with the overhead drone shots - nice work! As you move on to layer three, do you find yourself working less from the reference photo than you did on the earlier layers? In other words, does the painting take on more of a life of it's own as you move forward?
GrI at question - I keep referring to the reference as much as before
Thanks re intro
The wash of acrylic underneath has created a wonderful layering affect for the thicker acrylic on top. I just love your free abstract style. And I totally agree with you Colin, the sound of the brush on canvas is fantastic ! Look forward to Ep 4
Thanks for the encouraging comment!!
Loved the opening and I’m really enjoying watching your process. Thank you for sharing these!
Thank you
Awesome opening sequence!
Thank you.. playing about with a few things!
I love walking up round divis and black mountain, I recognised it straight away. I have painted it a couple of times. Love this series brilliant work, Colin.
I love watching you do this in the watery washes! I always assumed that acrylics were just glommed onto the canvas full-strength, creating very plastic-y, shiny, unnaturally bright work, so I've avoided all but the acrylic inks, which can also be used with a watercolor-like approach and effect. Looking forward to the next step!
That’s so lovely to hear. I’m just demonstrating the way I like to use them
Couldn’t you make a stay-wet palette to avoid wasting paint? Looking forward to seeing end result, thank you.
Fabulous!
I’m fascinated by how much water you are using! Somewhere in my early painting someone said that if you mix too much water into your paint it will not adhere to the canvas!! Well, obviously that’s not the case! Thank you for myth busting!
Yeah it seems to adhere quite well!
I long ago ruled out acrylics (and oils) because of the space requirements, and the cleaning up, but I enjoy watching you work because you're so obviously enjoying it. Many of the principles you express also apply to watercolor. And I love the views of NI. Someday I hope I'll see it for myself.
Thanks Sharon
❤
Loving the freedom of brush marks..hope they stay to the end & how it developes.. especially the drips? looking forward to the next installment..👍
I wish i have those colors
I too have often wondered how to get this pen and ink effect. Thanks.. I’m going to try it!
I am going to join in the fun today!!! Thank you!
Thanks!
I have them ❤ Thank you 😊
So beautiful! I especially love the flowing water!
Thank you
Love this pencil and your sketch! If you hold your pencil still in your non dominant hand and turn the pencil sharpener with the other then you won’t break the lead. It’s the physical stress of turning the pencil that causes the lead to break. If you keep the pencil still, the pencil sharpener takes the strain and not your pencil lead. Why didn’t they teach us this in school?! Xx
Looking forward to part 2!
I would like to see you paint the same scene in watercolor. It will show how the techniques are different
Not a bad idea
Very lovely Colin. This is the first time I haven't seen an underpainting and I hope you can explain when you use it.
Do you mean - explain why I don’t under paint the canvas in one solid colour?
And Hello Lisa! Are you all well?
I don’t enjoy painting with acrylic paint, but it was great to watch you starting this new series. Looking forward to the next episode 😊.
better to sharpen with a blade, much less waste of the core pigment.
Looking forward to future installments in this series!
I know nothing about acrylic so this is good to see. You've already got so much movement in your painting. Love the colours too. 👍
One word ….wow
Cool start, excited to see how the next layers go.
Interesting set of pens. Lovely study.
Thank you
I've just ordered a set of these - hopefully arriving tomorrow. Can't wait to have a go at this one Colin. Great video. Thanks Martin
They are EXCELLENT - they bring out this lovely ethereal quality
@@Woodwardswatercolours They arrived today and I had a go at this Colin. Wow!! They are great fun to use and they hardly need any water to transform a sketch. Easy to carry and use. As a tip (ha ha me telling you how to do it - that's funny) but I found it easier to lift paint off the pencil with a wet brush for splattering. Thanks again Martin
@ yes they really are very user friendly
The Pfeil linocut tools are a delight to use, comfortable and easy, however they aren't really suitable for softcut lino, they are too sharp almost. They are fantastic on traditional lino though, they cut the details so smoothly. The large tools are great for clearing areas out too. They are available individually, however I bought the Colin Blanchard 5 piece set from Jackson's Art , and it has a great selection to start your collection. They truly are worth the money if you enjoy linocutting. Thanks for the video 👍
the "weird" blade from essdee set is actually supposed to be the used similarly to Japanese - basically, carving outlines that are stronger than those carved with gouges
Thank you, this is great instruction and a pleasure to watch. Terrific sketching.
Ah thank you. Lovely comment
Thank you for the awesome video! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally painted with my coffee. 🙄 The struggle is real.
Ha, you and me both!!
a bit of a dumb question, but I just got the same paper by the company who also makes the markers and unsure which side of the paper to use? I realised one is almost like covered in a tiny layer of wax, and the other one is plain, but it is hard to tell which one is which, have to feel for the subtle waxy texture by feel, so is that the side to draw on? the colours smear, but at least I can blend the colour on it, the other side of the paper doesn't blend at all, marker strokes dry immediately
I would go with the side that is facing up once you lift the sheet of the front cover.. but after that whichever one works best for you!
As an Australian, I am indeed watching in the summer 😂
Nice video. Is it possible to either post the reference or zoom in your camera? That would be so helpful. Thx
Agreed I had to zoom in to see 👀
