Mississippi and World War I
When the United States declared war in April 1917, the 48 states that made up the nation at that time played an important role in mobilization - both in terms of manpower and in terms of the home front. Every state made a contribution that reflected its own unique history, politics, natural resources, level of industrialization, and its national guard, volunteers, and draftees.
For Mississippi in 1917, the memory of the American Civil War remained powerful. Against this backdrop, World War I was complicated, both politically and socially. At the same time however, Mississippi made major contributions to the war effort, and the period was ultimately a watershed for the state. To examine Mi...

The 1944 Leyte Invasion

General Douglas MacArthur’s forces began landing at Leyte on October 20, 1944. That’s the day MacArthur took the famous picture wading ashore at Leyte, but there was a lot more to the operation than that. Why was Leyte chosen over Mindanao? How prepared were Japanese commanders for the invasion? How did the Japanese army and navy try to repel the invasion? Did MacArthur really hope to take part...

Against a backdrop of war, Army delivered a perfect season and then many of the key pl...

Between 1914-1917, communications technology, and the way to secure or intercept this kind of traffic, progressed dramatically. When the United States entered WWI in April 1917, it had to quickly catch up in these areas. Remarkably, the Americans made considerable progress by 1918. This success was partly due to Parker Hitt, an innovative Army officer who designed modifications for machine guns...

My uncle was KIA in Aitape in Aug 1944. And MacArthur’s interference caused a lot of unnecessary casualties. The Japanese 18th army headquartered in Weiwak in New Guinea was cut off by leapfrogging over them and taking Aitape. However, the 18th had 130,000 soldiers and mustered a huge force to attack Aitape a couple hundred Km of Jungle distant. This was anticipated and a defensive line was prepared along a river about 10 miles from the Aitape airfield. As the Japanese forces drew near, MacArthur interfered and demanded the general in charge hurry up and get the confrontation over with. So the local general ordered a large percent of soldiers on the defensive line cross the river and go looking for the Japanese in the jungle. Then when the Japanese attacked the defensive line, the thinned defense could not hold even though they had the advantage of a river in front of them. The weakened defensive line was overrun by the Japanese instead of being stopped while trying to cross the river. If MacArthur had not demanded the general hurry up and get the battle over with, then the defensive line would not have been thinned and it would have held against the larger attacking force because the advantage of the river. Also, as one would expect, moving through the jungle eliminated the advantage of defensive positions and the river and casualties were sustained. MacArthur’s demand was unnecessary meddling because the Japanese were going to have to cross the river and were not in a position to dally. MacArthur wanted the anticipated battle to be completed quickly in order to convince FDR his plan was working and that it should be continued instead of the Navy’s proposed solution. RIP uncle Toivo whose name in Finnish meant Hope. Justice would have been if FDR ordered MacArthur himself to leave the defensive line, cross the river and walk through the jungle looking for the approaching Japanese 18th Army, just to make an impression on someone.

I was in the Philippines in July of 1961 and staying on the Bataan Peninsula where my Dad was working on the start-up of a new oil refinery for Standard Vacuum Oil Co. I took the company launch across Manila Bay to go to Manila and do some shopping and sight seeing on July 5th and only knew that General MacArthur was in the country for what was probably his final visit. After doing some chores, I ended up stopping at the Manila Hotel just for a break. When I got there I realized that there was a function going on with the Philippine War Veterans for General MacArthur. I walked into the area behind the dais where there were some American news people and watched the conclusion of General MacArthur's speech from the lectern. When he was finished, he and Mrs. MacArthur began to move across the dais but the crowd began to press forward and Mrs. MacArthur was concerned they would be pushed off the edge of the platform. She turned to me, a 19 y.o. American athlete, and asked if I could help them. I took her arm as she held on to the General and escorted them out of the ballroom. Always has been a proud memory for me.

If they are going to show both of them in the same camera they mind as well show photos and videos. They have amazing rare photos of MacArthur also. The reason their videos don't get many views is because no photos and videos. They have videos from many years ago with some nice production values and have hundreds of thousands of views like the ones about five-star generals.

Going back for many decades, leftists have attacked the use of the atomic bombs as being unnecessary and immoral for all kinds of reasons. The Japanese were on the verge of surrendering anyway, it was primarily a demonstration against the Soviet Union, a blockade would have produced a surrender and many other claims, many addressed in the questions of the video. This is of a piece with what leftists ALWAYS do in my experience. They imagine their theories based on no or very little evidence ---and ANY theory is worth advancing if it attacks the United States. And when they are eventually proven wrong they NEVER admit they were wrong or, heaven forfend, say, "I'm sorry" for the calumnies they disperse as widely as possible, And the news media joyfully repeats these calumnies ad infinitum.

MacArthur a megalomaniacal and egomaniacal overrated General. Against President Hoover’s wishes he crushed the bonus Army with his troops a very unpopular move which blackened Hoover’s presidency. He was totally unprepared in the Japanese Invasion of the Philippines, constantly in contention with Admiral Nimitz in the Pacific theater. ignored intelligence that said China was about to invade across the Yalu River and played the victim when he ignored his Commander in Chief’s (Harry Truman) orders and was fired. He then played the victim. Hopefully he will get his just due for being an all around bad general that he so much deserves.

The MacArthur Memorial defended MacArthur recently against slander regarding the age of Isobel Cooper, his Filipina girlfriend. Some West Point alumni were trying to "cancel" MacArthur until the Memorial proved with evidence that Cooper was 18 years old when she and Mac first met.

@@johnnotrealname8168 Fair enough and well said. You have to realize that that garbage video and the other anti-Mac videos have such extreme anti-Mac people who upload those videos that they DELETE all pro-Mac comments and replies in order to artificially make it look like there are hundreds or thousands of comments and make it look like they all 100% hate MacArthur, which is ridiculous. I commented numerous times on those videos and my comments always get removed and I know there are a bunch of Americans, Filipinos, Japanese, and South Koreans who strongly defend him but, nope, the owners of those videos wipe clean all comments from MacArthur fans. I also believe that most of those comments are bots and not even real humans writing them. They all seem to miraculously have an uncle or grandfather who "served directly under Mac" and saw the "horrible things" that Mac did with their own eyes. Yeah...so believable (rolling eyes). When you become a great person of historical significance you end up sadly having to make enemies out of a lot of different types of people. Look at all the other famous Americans. They trigger such extreme vitriol against them from a certain small minority of the population. Those angry comments on RUclips videos make up maybe 1% of the population. Most people either don't care about history or like MacArthur. The USMC has never forgiven MacArthur for rejecting USMC ground forces to be used in the liberation of both New Guinea island and the whole Philippines. The very fact that they keep screaming about how much they hate MacArthur means that most people still like him and they are angry that not everybody agrees with them. They are simply jealous and bitter that their favorite military servicemember does/did not have the same legendary resume as MacArthur.

These days, the best way for that to happen is via movies. BUT don't look to Hollywood for help. The reason is Hollywood's #1 rule: Will the movie be PROFITABLE IN CHINA? You have to understand that MacArthur is a villain in Chinese history and portraying him positively is not allowed. Therefore, Hollywood won't won't go there. (I know people in Hollywood). So the solution is to make independently produced movies about it.
