From Manchester, England, I share covers of various songs I love, some of them my own but most are covers from the likes of Pearl Jam, The Clash, Alice in Chains, Bruce Springsteen and more. I've been on the Manchester music scene since 2005 in lots of bands but most notably my old punk band Sam Smith & Company which was sadly disbanded due to the unfortunate sudden emergence of someone else who shares my birth name.
I now front Death or Glory - Tribute to the Clash as "Joe Strummer", continue to write and record with The Parish Church Fire and indulge myself by recording versions of my favourite songs in my spare time which is what you will find here.

Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes of the Broken Hearted [Acoustic Cover]
My acoustic cover of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin, later covered by Bruce Springsteen on his 2022 album "Only the Strong Survive".
In 2024 I had intended to cover at least one song from all of Springsteen's albums, including live albums, compilations, Tracks (all four discs) and the Promise but unfortunatley I'm going to fall a couple short. The rest will follow shortly but for now here is my version of What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, a song so good I often cant believe it.
Not an easy song to cover by any means but one I now enjoy playing as a result. A true soul classic and a genuine masterpiece of both songwriting and production.

The set for that Auckland show looked killer though! Shame you didn’t get this though, I imagine the scarcity of tours makes the ones you miss more gutting. Hopefully they go back your way soon. Rumours of them going back in 2025?

Fantastic cover!! I suspected you’d cover this at some point! Technical question, how do you choose what key to play guitar & sing? Trial & error for each song or do you know which keys to go to best for you?
I usually shoot for original key unless I want to alter the mood (my version of Breaking the Law by Judas Priest is an example of a time when I’ve tried to do that deliberately, ruclips.net/video/KOZdL6UpTA8/видео.htmlsi=jVPpmbQghunvxUIC) If there’s a song I want to do but its original key isn’t within my range, I tend to I sing it a capella in a comfortable register then try and work around that area whilst bringing the guitar back and figuring out the new key. With Dancing in the Dark, I used to do it half a step up from the original key but as I’ve gotten older my voice has changed a bit so I’ve now gone the other way, which is what I’m sharing here.
