SPOILER WARNING for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End episode 1 mostly!
This video is my little mini reflection essay and review of Sousou no Frieren or Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. I know it's been a while since I made a video but I hope this one made up for that.
Frieren is quite literally the best show I've watched in years. The quality of this one show is so high that it reminds me why I watch anime and not much of anything else. Frieren is just so full of heart, life, and spirit that it honestly makes all it's competition look terrible in comparison.

Something I've heard someone say is the reason Aiko never smiled in Punpun's dream is because she knows, even this version of herself, that Punpun will forget her as Punpun never kept a single a promise made between the two instead always breaking the trust she went to put in him. Punpun is an awful person, much worse than Aiko I'd argue, but as you put he had people who accepted him no matter what while Aiko only had her mother and ultimately that's what made the difference, Punpun was in love with the idea he had of Aiko while Aiko was just in love with the idea of unconditional love which she sought through Punpun. Also I'm glad that you agree that the ending of Punpun is hopeful, I see so many people calling it a downer ending because the author said so but in reality I think that it's ultimately happy. I'd love to see a discussion on how the more human Punpun becomes the more inhuman his actions become because his character design through the series and how when he reaches he lowest points we see him lose his bird self to become a human eventually not even having a hidden head being fully revealed in bandages at his very lowest.

i feel like if people love aiko and hate punpun, they’re not reading the story properly or are simply not connected to humanity enough. both character, in-fact all, are really tragic as a result of traumas and inner turmoil that was beyond their control. it’s sad how they both turned out (by the way i don’t hate aiko. in fact, i don’t hate or love any character. i empathise with every single one of them)

@@redflamingarrow_ it’s like they haven’t read the story at all. we are all reading mostly punpuns perspective and it’s dives in to his thoughts and feelings and it should pretty much make the reader somewhat build empathy for him because we know why he turned out the way he did. it’s not excusable though but it’s logical why he turned out that way. nobody can hate him because he is a human and the mind is fragile, there’s only so much a person can take before they crack but i feel like most of the readers just read to see “the tragic murder and suicide” and haven’t really fully invested in the whole thing #tbh thats why i feel like almost everyone kinda missed the whole gist of it

I don't think anyone in this story is all good or all bad. It's easy to turn things into a black and white situation, but I really disagree that it is black and white to be honest. There was a lot of things that Aiko did in the story at which I may or may not have said "WHAT ARE YOU DONG??" out loud while reading... But the same is for Punpun. It's just that we live in Punpun's head that we get to see everything he's gone through and is doing. Most of the characters in the story likely have "punpun moments" too.

No. Simply no. There are too many variables that affected PunPun and the actions himself took that this will probably not happen again. The manga is depressing and ends on a low note. I hate that. There are so many parts where its not relatable at all. Its depressing for the sake of it, but the justification feels so forced overall. I'll end it with the realest quote you'll be reminded of today: “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” - Winston Churchill

But I wouldn't doubt it if there was a kid out there in the next couple years who grows up with an abusive dad. Maybe a different kid grows up with a mom who never shows him love. Maybe a different kid decides to run away from home with his childhood love.

I had a very different reading. We see everything through Punpun's eyes. Not only does he attempt to absolve himself of his involvement with Aiko - intentional retcons that could be construed as too coincidental, such as making it so Aiko took responsibility for killing her mother rather than Punpun - he attempts to remove guilt of her from his mind entirely... only to bind himself to a mother with a son that isn't his. It's amazing how people overlook this and think Punpun is redeemable. It's like if Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov instead of confessing his sin by the ending, he doubles down and never confronts himself. Instead of accountability, Punpun self-editorializes - he tricks the reader into thinking of a stereotypical happy ending with Sachi. But we know better. We know Punpun's personality, his depression, his dark desires. We know it hasn't left him but he wants so badly to feel like he's on the path to healing. We see proof of Punpun's crimes in how he repeats the cycle of becoming a "guardian" to troubled girls. His internalized desire to self-actualize without actually taking accountability is on full display. It's why Inio Asano stated it wasn't a "happy" ending or wasn't meant to be interpreted as such.

I know what you mean. That was the author's original intention of course, but despite that I did pick up a little bit of hope in the ending. I don't think Asano was successful at portraying a completely tragic ending. This does come with a bit of personal bias probably, but as long as Punpun is still alive, there is still hope for him finding some kind of contentment in his life. To me that's what that panel of him waving to Harumi represented. He's surrounded by family and friends and seems to be starting a new family with Sachi. I also don't think that's that bad cause I myself was raised by a stepdad. Again some personal bias there.

Lol, "You reap what you sow", is totally the case with aiko and she totally deserved it what happened to her. And I feel sorry for punpun rather than aiko. Reread the story than you will understand, what I am saying is, if aiko hadn't come, and met punpun, punpun would have been playing with his friends like normal, but aiko made unreasonable request to go to kagashima, when they are literally kids, ofc punpun can't make her wish true and punpun got depressed, and again he made promise with yaguchi because of aiko and because of her toxic mindset, she pursued punpun and gave him hope, and punpun tried to cheat yaguchi, which further lead him to self loathe himself because punpun was kind and he liked yaguchi........... Poor punpun, he had a bad childhood, then had a crush on a toxic girl, then his father and mother got divorced and he was forced with a mother, that he didn't love because of her careless attitude and a coward father....... I mean punpun isn't that bad, I would Like to think for most of the chapter he tried to kind and considerate to others. And yes, punpun have faults but tried to overcome it but whenever he did or had a hope he only failed and at last failed but aiko didn't even tried to do something of her situation and just relied on punpun for help in last arc, and when punpun gave up everything for her sake, she constantly doubted his love and did I mentioned that for aiko love was a trade? Is that if you love me than I love you is a toxic mindset because it is based agreement and a agreement can be torn apart easily, hence she constantly doubted punpun or his love for her, which further frustrated punpun, and do not get started on punpun sexual frustration, man. And at the end of the story, even his child was his.........

Blaming Aiko for being toxic when she was as young as punpun when she made the promise to him, neglecting to mention bow punpun was the one that forced their relationship when he met her when they got older, abd forgetting punpuns physically abusive treatment towards Aiko. Women and girls arent objects meant to perpetuate a mabs life, it was not Aiko fault that punpun became obsessed with her. If anything they were both toxic, so blaming Aiko for punpun own faults is the definition of sexist.

Punpun is fantastic because of how many ways you really can look at it. Different people's insights into the story can tell you a lot about who they are as people. I don't think I could ever get everything I think about the series into words but a large theme I picked up on was guilt. We all have things we wish we could revisit and undo, but becoming fixated on these things will only make you miserable. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy once you start telling yourself how awful you are because of something that you did in the past. Punpun's uncle is an example of this, where he would just stew in self hatred until he revisited the pottery shop. You cannot begin to move past prior mistakes and heal until you let go of that guilt. Punpun and Aiko is the key example though. Both of them thought that everything would be fine if they could just fix that one regret, but when they found that it changed literally nothing, and they didn't even really seem to like eachother that much, the disappointment was too much to bear (combined with the stress of being fugitives). In a way it was also ironic that if they had just gone back and confronted the consequences of their crime, they likely would have been able to argue self defence and receive lighter punishment. I think that may have been what ended up happening with Punpun anyway, haven't read in a while. Lol i could make one of these videos if I put my thoughts together more coherently.

I gotta disagree. I dont think its a straight up a cycle thats gonna just happen again in the same fashion as Pun pun's life. To me its just a familiar starting point we all can relate to and I think the author is saying that its just another kid on another journey and that he has "life" to deal with. The cards Pun Pun was dealt werent great and he also made very bad decisions but that doesnt have to be this nameless kid's fate. Hell, they already have a better teacher in Shuntarou who actually noticed the kid's expression. Throughout the manga there are a few times characters mention how different their lives wouldve been if x y and z happened or if they made x y and z choices. During the last arc Sigma Pun Pun (lol) tells Aiko to stop worrying about the ifs which I agree with BUT NOW those ifs are a bit more clear with this new kid because we seen what Pun Pun went through. "If he doesnt do this hes fine" "If he does this hes going down a dark path" etc etc.. I think the ending is just very indifferent much like real life, and whatever happens is up to that kid's situation and his actions when he gets older. Just my opinion though. Also, sorryI'm not great with commas haha.

While I can agree with some of what's said, I think some parts can/should be interpreted differently based on the overall story & their actions: I don't think Aiko purposely left Punpun because of selfish reasons, like wanting to die happy & that would make her remembered forever, as you mention. I think it was two-fold - She recognized that what Punpun had become for her sake was not what she had fallen in love with as a child ( And Punpun also had started to realize this, as he spends much of the time unhappy with her current-self & chasing her past-self ), or even prior to the murder. She felt that in her death he could be "free" from all this, even if it leads to some kind of sadness too. She was correct. Punpun was given an additional chance at life, even if not the life he initially envisions for himself. Because he no longer has an "Aiko" to chase, like we saw him do all the way through the manga to this point, he can finally "move on" with his own life. His entire life up to this point in the story was to live for someone else. His only purpose was so that he could find Aiko and she'd be the one to kill him or love him. EVERYTHING revolved around that. Nearly every action he took served the purpose of either finding Aiko or shaping/positioning himself so that he would be her eventual ideal. With Aiko dead Punpun no longer has this "ghost" of a young school-boy crush running around in his mind. He knows what it was really like now & what happened & what the outcome was. There is no chase left to give. This is best showcased in how Punpun handles his chronicling of his life after her death, as if talking to Aiko. He isn't incredibly sad. He isn't incredibly angry. He even says things like: "I'm moving forward. It turns out it's not so hard." He then speaks of one of the most powerful overarching points of the entire manga: We glorify our memories, particularly those we formed when young. We find out that the "Milky Way" they all saw as children maybe wasn't exactly the way they remember & this likely extends well into their memories of each other, PunPun then bringing up how maybe he never quite remembered her correctly to begin with - Was that what her voice was really like? Is that what she ever really looked like? He then starts to let her go even more, mentioning further that maybe both their memories of each other, the stars the evening, it always being cloudy, maybe their own memories are faulty and he needs to move forward. Aiko didn't make a mistake in the end. Aiko recognized that if both of them are around, they'll both remain "broken" - As they can't go back to when they were kids & they can't handle what each other has become. She recognized that one of them had to die to save the other. She made the decision before Punpun could.

I get that many see the story's ending as a good one. but there are fans who beg to differ because pun pun is forced to live everyday of his life without the girl he was longing for years while living with the guilt that he is forgetting her day by day but never forgetting the feeling, as you said. but to me, the ending is just as neutral as it gets. sure aiko is dead and pun pun is slowly forgetting her, but he chooses to move on with the tragedy he has just faced. that's just how life is. and when he cried saying good bye to harumi even though it is implied that pun pun forgot harumi's name, it proved the point that pun pun's feelings for harumi never went away, the same way when pun pun will never forget the feelings he felt for aiko.

Her mistake was loving him. He was selfish and self absorbed, nothing he did was out of anything more than how it made HIM feel, he was not "there" he wasn't happy with her, and she could sense that, she projected so much in the promises he made that she wasted her whole life wIting for him to keep them. He never needed her. Ever. But from the moment she met him she needed what he promised. Love, anf he really didn't know how to. Just go through motions.

Legit. I'd argue they were both this way, but really it was not what either of them needed at the time.

@redflamingarrow_ i can see that too. She did end up killing her own monster of a mother to "free" herself, and that ended up complicating and destroying any semblance of a chance they may have scaped together.🥲

facts. I haven’t seen someone mention it but he led her on too hard 😓 the first time was unlucky. however the second time he literally held her hand tightly knowing that if he did it would be solidified but then at the end of all of that he abandons that and says he’d fall into a deep hole if he stole yugichis girlfriend. basically ripped her heart out

Punpun was the one who has never been able to move on relying on a false image he had about Aiko. She was as selfish as him, since the love she felt was at least partially related to her hope that punpun could represent a way of escaping her reality

In my headcanon they turned themselves into the police at the beach town; both got medical treatment and put on parole and they basically just settled down there. Punpun got his drivers license and real estate license. Aiko took over the local clinics and the city folk visit them whenever they take off for vacation.

Oyasumi pun pun is so amazing it’s by far my favorite manga. And it’s so amazing how people interpret it. I see the ending as a melancholic one where pun pun is stuck in hell with his new family. Being trapped with the people he left behind and not able to leave and join aiko.
