I absolutely appreciate that you guys try to get the name pronunciation correct. A helpful cheat code for pronouncing Japanese names is that most of the time you can defer to how you pronounce Spanish names, vowels and consonants. Hope that helps as there will be many more names from Japan in the coming years. My two cents as an NPB follower: There is a growing trend among the younger generation of Japanese baseball players, to go to the MLB early vs late. It could be, as some have speculated, that Sasaki has a clause in his contract. Whether true or not, Chiba Lotte is presenting Sasaki's upcoming posting in a magnanimous light. Japanese teams are owned by corporations and their teams can be argued are first and foremost an advertising budget for their products vs a moneymaking venture. While losing out on millions in posting fee is crazy, Chiba Lotte, whether forced by contract clause or by not wanting the Japanese public to turn cold to their brand (because they want Roki to succeed in the MLB) may not be so crazy. Perhaps also tied to the effect of Ohtani WS and the Japan WBC win over the US, the "Japanese public's" increased love to see their own succeeding on the highest level may factor too. Sasaki's succeeding in the MLB would be the happy ending to his challenging childhood, losing father and other family members to the Tohoku tsunami. I could be wrong and reaching in my take but I do know that optics are way more important in Japan than they are here and even more in corporate marketing. LOTTE is a "huge" multi-conglomerate in both Japan and Korea (LOTTE Giants) . Fun fact: LOTTE has also produced baseball cards.

The "Hye" in Hye Seong Kim is pronounced with an accented E as used in José. Hé Seong Kim (Hae Song Kim).

it’s pronounced: su, gha, no (short u, a, o). with that said, it sounds really awkward when western media (e.g. tv) tries to pronounce japanese words correctly. so i personally prefer the incorrect pronouncinations. i.e. long vowels.

The "S" in Sugano functions the same any other "S". If it was going to produce an "SH" sound it would just be spelled Shugano, Japanese names are spelled phonetically.

Sasaki on the Rays wins multiple Cy youngs. The Red Sox would tell him to throw his alien fastball < 30% of the time and ruin him.

Are you guys keeping an eye on KBO stud Do Yeong Kim? Kid slashed 300/400/600 and was just 2 HR short of a 40/40 season. Played nearly all games in 2024 at age 20. Defensively, he's not a future 3B in any higher leagues, but it seems like his bat could play. KBO is considered similar to between A+ and AA ball, right? If there was 20 y/o with his numbers, I feel like he'd be in the top 5 prospects heading into 2025 Also, Kim Hye Seong feels like a Andres Gimenez clone And Ogasawara feels like a shorter inning version of Erasmo Ramirez

It will likely be a while before you guys cover my Guardians but I’ll be listening to each list til then. There are several players who aren’t consensus top guys that I want to hear your opinions on.

Good podcast. Tried the WBSC link to get the bundle and it says not available in this country. Wish you would have talked about more players on the U.S. team who had better batting and pitching stats this past season thn the few you mentioned. The BA and MLB top 100 prospect lists are mostly outdated and not representative of actual recent minor league performance.

I live in Tucson, AZ and thought the Nogales conversation was great. For some context that will probably never be needed again, Nogales, AZ is a border town that is partially in the US and partially in Mexico. Think of it like Kansas City where half is in Missouri while the other half is in Kansas.

I've been following Drake Baldwin since early June and am intrigued. But he does have quite a big leg kick. Many other prospects this podcast have discussed this year have needed to quiet their leg kicks to succeed. Will Baldwin also eventually struggle against MLB competition and need to do the same? I suppose only time will tell...

I’m catching up on pods so I’m a little late, and I hope I’m not repeating myself, but I hope y’all don’t mind a little pronunciation note on Arjun Nimmala. His last name is pronounced NIM-ma-la, with the stress on the first syllable. (Actually, if type his name into Google Translate and select Telugu as the language, you can hear how it’s pronounced.) I don’t know him personally or anything, but we’re from the same ethno-linguistic community; his parents are literally from the same twin cities area in South India as mine. Never thought I’d see a kid who could be my cousin playing pro ball. Hell, even other Indian people stereotype us as a bunch of unathletic nerds lol. And I’m glad we finally have a major leaguer of Indian descent in Kumar Rocker. I once hoped it would be me, but it turns out an 80-grade fastball and an 80mph fastball aren’t the same thing. 😜

Where do you guys find metrics for these minor leaguers besides baseball reference?
