I have a 2021 3500hd…everyday driver with about 88k miles…when I have my 16 enclosed aluminum trailer hooked on, loaded or empty doesn’t matter, it takes my fuel mileage from 18-20 mpg down to 10-12….biggest downfall to this truck… anything I can do to help with this issue?..additives, tuners, bolt ons, etc?
@@miltonrust6396 honestly probably not. Aerodynamic are your biggest enemy with these trucks especially because they have a higher ratio running gear. I suppose you could look into re-gearing the rear end. Or if it’s an option for you, I’ve never had a truck that went on a diet plan that didn’t do much better on fuel mileage.
Let's hear more about that LBZ..
What fule additive are u using if ur using anny?
@@wrestling304131 mostly power services, or Lucas cetane booster
@PartTime_Pro cool thanks
Use XPD additive.
Dang, I thought we were going to get a new song from Oliver Anthony about his truck. 👋
WOW!!! Thank you for this information!
Speaking of hp4 failure, do you run any additives in your fuel? I run opti-lube in every tank and run a vse fuel saver system.
@@scottlubaczewski1411 I do. I usually run powerservices or Lucas products . But I try a lot of new stuff too.
@PartTime_Pro was just curious as I have heard US diesel fuel ULSD has less lubrication, and it affects these fuel systems. I figured it's cheap insurance to protect against these issues by running it every tank. Your response has me second guessing that strategy.
@@scottlubaczewski1411 I would always use it. A lot of fuel is mid to poor quality, and the design of the pump seems to be the issue as well. With as much as we used to run these trucks, I’m not gonna lie there was plenty of times we didn’t add additional additives, I’m much more religious about using it now as well as filling at better stations. The hp4 pump is a bit better than the cp4 as far as longevity. But in the end I’d never run any diesel without a quality additive.
An OEM 10 speed new tranny is only $3600 from GM???
@@scottlubaczewski1411 yep, surprised me as well. Not sure if they have gone up much since then.
@@PartTime_Pro What do you classify towing heavy? I have a 42 5th triple axle wheel and curious how it compares.. Thanks
@@TheJsmharley my set up weighs around 18.5k lbs empty truck & trailer. Fully loaded can be up to another 15k - 18k lbs on top of that. These trucks are rated to a 40k lb gross combined weight. I probably used to average a 30k gross weight. And in the mountains, I tried to avoid loading anything that weighed over 12k. And regardless of weight in the mountains, I always control the transmission manually.
My issue is dragging brakes in reverse. Any one had this? Pads are good….
@@wenhargis7727 I haven’t had any issues with that. Can you explain more?
@ cold truck in reverse the brakes drag loudly, once in awhile going slow forward but always in reverse
@@wenhargis7727 does one pad (inner or outer) wear significantly faster than the other?
Nope, I think it must be hardware 99% of time it’s reverse, so pads won’t show wear for 50’ slow rotation and brake has to be lightly applied
@ yea slide pins gunked up or Ebrake needs adjustment
Love to see your break down on hot shoting with the Chevy I’d love to stay with Chevy but leaning towards the ram
@@minig4126 I’ve learned a ton over the last 5 years for sure. I definitely plan on doing a video about hotshot but need to actually be prepared when I do it so I don’t just ramble for 20-30min
Nearly all my issues with my 21 3500 AT4 were emissions related. Def tank melt down 3 times in 3 years Def tank wiring harness melt down 2 times EGR failed causing a smoking issue plugging the emissions Nox sensors failed Def tank not registering the fluid level and derating the truck thinking the tank is empty I had some other issues too like the HVAC failed and the whole system in the cab had to be replaced. The block heater shorted out 2 times almost starting a fire each time. The TLCM failed once killing all the trucks lights. Leaking front axle seals left and right about once a year. A main seal leak right off the lot that they said was manufacturing grease, until I came back 3 months later with oil everywhere. Oil pan seal leak And the upper and lower intermediate steering shafts had to be replaced like 6 times for a bad rattle in the steering wheel. It wasn’t until the last part update that the issue was finally resolved. But since I had the full delete done it’s been getting great MPG, runs smooth has lots of power and no more problems knock on wood. But I’m only at 145k on my clock. I use this truck primarily on the highway either on longer drives or when we are hauling the quads and RV. It’s not city driven much at all. In case anyone is wondering, I usually tow about 8k lbs and max out the GVW at around 12,000, it’s rated for 12,100. Towing pre delete I usually got around 29L/100km or about 8 mpg, and not towing hwy driving I usually got around 18-19 mpg. Post delete I get about 10L/100km (23.5mpg) hwy driving not towing and between 22-25L/100km (10-9.5mpg towing).
I had my steering gear box replaced. Still have a knock and a grinding sound when Turing right when the truck is cold. After it’s warmed up it’s fine. Could my issue be the upper and lower shafts as well, or the plastic bushing in the steering column?
@ they replaced the gear box, and the upper and lower steering shafts. On ice or snowy roads dry steering it makes a funny sound as the tires turn but other than that mine is better. Mine never made any grinding noises. What would happen is any road imperfections, bumps, or say yours driving on a gravel road, you could hold the steering wheel straight and not move it. It would feel loose, and make a loud knocking that could be heard in the steering wheel and you travel over the rougher terrain.
22L5P 130k avg 15.4 no issues down to 9 towing 17500 at 75-80mph
@@dusdroadadventures7978 it’s all in the aerodynamics. I can tow at 35k gross and get better fuel mileage than 27k gross if the aerodynamics are better.
Never any def problems? My 22 kept clogging and sucking up the filters while towing.
@@chepomarin6216 nope no dpf issues for me

Awesome video. I have a 22 D max with 71k towing 80% of time. At about 25k kept getting light for low coolant. Dealer replaced coolant reservoir tank and sensor. At 45k def tank replaced. At 70k just got engine light for exhaust leak. Dealer replaced a seal between exhaust manifold and SCR/converter. Upgrades. Fass fuel system saver. Banks rear differential cover. PPE deep trans pan. Soon banks oil pan. Spe map sensor spacer. Readylift air bags w/onboard compressor. Bilstein front and rear shocks 4600 series. So far awesome truck! Also running a HD shocker hitch. Huge difference when hauling with that and the airbags combined. I’m averaging 13.8 mpg and use 2oz edt every fill up.
@@dalezitzii3575 2nd the shocker hitch. Best investment I’ve ever made.
Nice video Have you considered adding a Banks Cool Running oil pan that adds cooling fins, allows complete drain of old oil and adds 2qts oil capacity??
@@BUIKPAN if someone gave me one, I’d definitely put it on. But there would definitely be some other mods I’d do with my time and money before that. I have no issue with banks and I do have some banks products but many of their products don’t really make a noticeable difference in real world applications, not saying I wouldn’t do things like their oil/tranny pans, rear diff pan, or some of their under hood items, just saying they’d be much lower on my priority list vs like a add a fuel filter kit, a ccv re-route, a turbo upgrade, etc

@@andrewwoitaszewski4961 yea I know some guys that have done it, mostly only benefits under the extreme load conditions. That’s also when the truck self cleans in a sense. Great video, I'm curious if you have seen or heard of any issues with the 2024 L5P? I have one and love it but am nervous about future repair costs as these new trucks seem so complicated with all the sensors and emissions. Thanks in advance.
@@jcf6597 I haven’t heard of anything personally. It’s more or less the same platform but I do know it’s running a better/redesigned turbo. My best advice is to run a good fuel and oil additive, and make sure you drive it like you stole it every once in a while. Seems like the most emission issues come from those who do little driving or “grandpa driving” and the bigger issues come from those who put a ton of very hard miles on them, like me. There’s must be a happy medium
@@PartTime_Pro Thanks. What fuel additive do you recommend?
@@jcf6597 I use a lot power services (the gray bottle) but I’m a fan of the Lucas products. I run the Lucas oil stabilizer in my oil and when I can find it I run their cetane booster for fuel. The Lucas injector cleaner every few tanks and their dpf cleaner once every few months.
Had similar issues with my 03 2500HD gasser. After going down the rabbit hole or this one says this cured it that says that cured it. Common denominator was Ground. Found the truck had like 7 grounds in the harness. Ran gator chopped copper wire grounds at each location. Problem went away. Started taking off on by one to find the culprit. In that case it was ground for the computer control unit on the firewall. With relation to the computer, ground is far more delicate. Just my 2 cents on what I found.

Just replaced fuel filter today and had brass looking metal shavings. I never replaced any trans fluid. Want to do something before any issues arises. I pull about a 10k lb trailer about 50% of the time. After I just replaced the fuel filter and my average won’t go over 10.5 mph. That’s just for test drive after working on it
@@jamesthomas1997 “some” metal shavings are “normal” according to GM. They claim it’s from the lift pump (inside the tank-part of the sending unit) and not the injection pump. My other truck has some small flakes from time to to time, but hasn’t had any fuel delivery problems. The one that had the injection pump fail was having issues maintaining consistent rail pressure and also you could literally hear it clanking/tapping under the hood, and started seeing larger and more flakes in the filter. I wouldn’t be too concerned for you yet unless you start seeing other symptoms. Find a good fuel additive and run it religiously. Also go get that trans serviced. I feel like mine are doing better this go around, and I’ve gotten them serviced at least once around 30k & 100k after replacing them. As far as mpg that sounds normal is for towing. If it’s that low without a trailer that’s concerning.

High RPM going down hill is not a problem. At all. I used to panic too when it happened, but it’s a part of the process. I’ve been running Diesel Extreme from Hot Shots Secret since day one. Out on the road dealership were not open on Sundays and sometimes on Saturdays. Started to run at the pump and that was a mistake. Two things I found out to help keep mileage up was at my 34 hour reset or if I pulled in the mountains I would clean my MAP sensor and started using Blue DEF platinum. At 25k ish started to run AMS Oil. At 80k my bank one and bank two sensors were replaced for the dpf system. At 115k my idler pulley locked up and took out my fan clutch and serpentine belt. Luckily it did take out my radiator. Now the truck is sitting at home with about 174k and hardly driving since jumping into my W900 and just running it. I had the ABS/speed sensor code come when hitting the rumble strips happened to me and also my trailer brake would indicate that the brakes disabled and reconnected on the dash. Since both truck and trailer are new ‘22 I started the hunt to fix. After replacing trailer module on truck and re-wiring trailer, I figured out, doing maintenance, that one of my magnetic on 10k trailer axle lost it’s retaining clip came off and as it looses contact the trailer brake warning would come back.
