Random Encounters: Improv Cartooning (Episode 39)
What's "improv cartooning"? Using random encounter tables, a die rolling app, and audience participation to select some characters/creatures and the situations they'll be in ... and whatever the result is, Stan! will draw!
Sounds like fun, right?

Hey, Jeff! yet another TTRPG peep who helped me out along the way.
Thanks for having Wolfgang on. He was very kind to hire me to write a few posts for the Kobold blog when I was just starting. And really, everyone on the team are good people.
Chris Perkins should write more DM Experience. I would pay to subscribe to it!
Sounds like your guest is OSR n that's ok.
Don't feel bad many USA voters r fascist.
Perkins is the man! Without those Aquisitions Inc podcasts idk if I'd ever have taken the leap! Thank you! It also would've been great to hear his thoughts on the OSR explosion and his thoughts on the landscape of TTRPGs in general.
Hopefully we can get to those topics the next time he visits. Thanks for your support!
Our hobby is in a great hands with Chris Perkins, someone who loves the game and has a good heart.
Yeah. It really is incredible to spend time with someone who has that much talent AND that much spirit.
Tickets for GenCon go on sale this weekend, I'm going to be going for my first time, hope to see you there!
Right now it seems unlikely that I'll be at Gen Con ... but that's the kind of thing that often comes together later in the year (if someone decides to fly me in for an event).
Fun night Stan! Thanks! I'm trying to make this a new catchphrase: "Reading is Fun-damental, but Drawing is just plain FUN!" What do you think? 😁
I noticed that as I was closing up, and was sure I'd seen it before! That's a good catch phrase. I'll see if there's way for me to make myself sound NATURAL saying it. LOL
Some really great insights. I missed this live now catching up on your show.
Brindlewood Bay is my current favorite game. The way it opens up worldbuilding to the players has changed the way I think about writing RPGs
Playing it has definitely been enlightening.
I really like the casual format and insider information. It feels more like a natural conversation rather than the usual interview style.
Thanks! It's definitely my goal to have these feel more like conversations than formal interviews. I'm glad that comes through.
cool show. I think Chris and I are the same age, but I didn't start until I was 14, so it was Moldvay instead of Prof. Holmes. But it's been a wild ride.
A wild ride indeed! Moldvay or Holmes ... those were both GREAT entries into this hobby of ours! Thanks for tuning in and saying hi!
Chris had border problems because of Phish? Was Trey Anastasio the border guard?
Another great one! Always nice to see and hear Chris
And always good to see you, Toren! Thanks for being part of the show!
What a great conversation! It's rare to get to hear from a major exec at one of your favorite companies, and even more rare to have them answer your questions and interact with you. Thank you for facilitating that and for a great interview between two very talented, likeable fellas. 😁
Well, with glowing praise like that, I guess I'll have to do it again! :^)
Please never stop making Weird Little Babies (sounds like a kid's RPG)
I'd never heard that term until James said it ... and now I'm going to start using it, too!
Adding to the loss of what the magazines provided - even if you only sent in a letter to the editor and got it published, that was high cred. The comic book letter columns have also been long gone - another huge loss. There were some very famous people like T.M. Maple in the columns whom I looked forward to reading just as much as the comic itself.
Oh yeah ... that's SO true!
If you are able to interview Ray again, please could you ask him about his 5 Laws of Dungeoncraft: why he created them, and what would he change or even add now? (And yes I have written the First Law at the front of y new DMG as he advised oh so long ago ....)
I hope I get to have Ray on again ... and I've made a note to myself to try to include that question! (I'd really like to know the answer, myself!)
@TheRealStannex Thank you 😀
Love the origin story.
Next time he'll tell us how he got his super powers! ;^)
That Elmore art for the book is my favorite D&D art of all time. I remember first seeing the book cover at B. Dalton Books at Whitwood Mall in Whittier, Calfornia. The cover made me pick up the book and I bought it that day.
I've got a couple of Elmore art books on my shelves, and I love pulling them down and just flipping through them. So inspirational!! Thanks for watching ... AND for sharing your thoughts.
Great job Stan! I think Kobolds having a snowball fight was my favorite 😊
Thank you! That was fun to draw! :^)
Great I could watch you live, James Wayatt seems charming guy. Tbh i think this podcast/channel is underrated a lot, im big fan of earlier stuff (odnd, bx) so watching interviews with people from old times is priceless. Also im big fan of Al-Qadim, I tried to find any Sue Weinlein interview the other day and that is how i got here. And also, as illustrator/ comic artist myself i can say that art part is icing on the cake. This place deserves more attention :)
Thank you kindly. The good thing about doing this on YT is that it creates an archive that people can find. Of course, I'd LOVE it if more people "discovered" the show sooner rather than later ... but I'm okay with creating something that can be appreciated no matter WHEN people find it.
Great interview Stan! There are such great people in this hobby that I'd love to hang out with or play in a game
I have met an amazing number of incredible people during my time in the game industry. And as I meet more and more of the current generation, I see that it still remains true today.
Another god of gaming! Thanks, Bill for all your incredible work over the years and thanks to Stan for the great interview!
Thank you for turning in ... AND taking the time to leave a note. Very much appreciated in both cases.
I loved the Living Greyhawk Gazateer (used it for DMing 3e) and I mega loved Living Greyhawk- was a formative experience for me. Great guest l, great discussion! (Was nice to see a serious side of Mona, who I mostly know as Tiny Murder Clown.)
There's definitely more to Erik than Tiny Murder Clown ... but that part is always there, too!
Torg!!!
Audio is key. Consider reconfiguring your current mic, or if that doesn’t work then buying a better mic.
Thanks for the feedback. A better mic is very high on my wish list!
Good stuff here. Glad to subscribe to this channel.
Thank you kindly! Glad to have you here! :^)
Adorei 👏
Obrigado!
Fun as always! My favorite tonight was the Snowman. The expression on his face was hilarious 😂
Thanks! I think that whole third image had a lot of ideas that would be fun to further explore.
Those of us that learned with the 83 Basic set, we were able to learn without an existing DM. That let us develop our own styles and preferences.
True ... but we really had to WANT to learn it. Even those classic intro boxes weren't EASY to parse.
Thanks for the Underground RPG Ray!
Great to see Mike Mearls! Thanks Mike for the version of D&D that I have played and enjoyed the most! I am looking forward at what Chaosium will bring on the upcoming years! Cheers!
Thanks for watching (and leaving a comment)! Glad you enjoyed our conversation.
Fantastic art Stan. He's got a serious face. It is interesting learning about Dragonlance. I'm painting my house and this is giving me great audio material. I'm going to listen to all of these information rich episodes. Thank you again for making these. I hope you interview yourself for number 50.
Glad you're enjoying them. I see Jeff regularly, so I'll tell him your assessment of his face. LOL.
"Pockets won't be invented for two editions yet." Oh man, you guys had me laughing out loud!
We should go on tour, eh? ;^)
Diesel's description of the best seminar being where he just talked about old experiences and you saying that's what you're trying to recreate with this show is very accurate. You hit the nail on the head. That's why people like this show! Sounds like the Halloween parties were a lot of fun. I enjoyed hearing the stories. I love Diesel's old black and white art! Thanks for the stories Stan!
Thanks! Yeah, when I talk to people about being on the show, that's how I describe it ... I think that's what makes it different than most. The Halloween parties were EPIC!
Thanks, Stan! and Ray!
Thank you for watching!
Only caught the last 25 minutes, but Ray seems like an interesting guest. I'll watch the rest soon! Thanks for the awesome content Stan!
Well, thank YOU for the kind words. Yeah, Ray's a smart, smart guy, and I think you'll enjoy the first hour just as much!
Great interview! As much as I love Dragonlance, Ray articulated brilliantly why it's not cost-effective to focus on setting specific gaming material. Though......I still hope they do it! 😂
There's definitely a lot of room to give some coverage to beloved settings. But it's unlikely to ever be enough for their biggest fans unless Hasbro re-opens a section of WotC that FOCUSES on providing narrative-a new Book Department or a video production arm. But they'd ALSO have to adequately FUND those efforts and give them the room and time to grow.
Bill seems like a pretty wise dude.
He IS a clever fellow!
Great episode Stan!
Super fun as always Stan!
Thanks! Always good to see you in the chat room!
Have really enjoyed your series and this was a great episode
Thank you, kindly! Hope I can continue to deliver the goods as we roll forward!
Stan nailed the dragon's voice!
Ha! Thanks! Maybe I should explore a career in V.O.
Very cool interview
Thanks! It was definitely a fun conversation!
Nice to see Mike again. His insights are always valued. His comments about staging your successes remind me of Larian's history. BG3 didn't happen overnight. They've been building up to it since the beginning, including getting laughed out of licensing meetings. :)
It was certainly a FUN conversation! Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Great show!
Thank you kindly!
michaeljpastor Merry Christmas Stan! Best quote: "Here's a tax form." Yes, this conversation is very different and one of the best ones you've had. Stan, I hope that Santa brings you a new computer for Christmas (even if it's later). That was Ben Byrne that hosts the Eldritch Lorecast for Ghostfire Gaming. Nomenclature to describe the TTRPG experience(s) is vitally important and has never been properly codified. To Mike's later point, distribution has never been solved either. Ironically, the solution to both is largely the same: metadata tagging of games and products, much like the comic book industry has done with the Comet metadata standard through the work of ComicsPRO, the national comic book retailers' association. D&D Beyond is the tax form software, referring back to Mike's analogy from earlier.
Glad you enjoyed the show. And thanks for pitching in with the clarifications.
I have 25 bucks
