Christmas is mostly about being with family. It is a real business and the main purpose is to gather the family (not getting drunk 😉) Santa is quite new in Portugal though it spread really fast. More traditional and catholic families it is baby Jesus who offers the gifts Not everyone has Bacalhao. In my family we always have turkey Most people have Presepios, with baby Jesus, his Parents and sometimes other Christian figures that surround the Holy Birth 😊

Some people eat octopus instead of bacalhau.

The generation of my parents and my grandparents it was baby Jesus. They would leave shoes close to the fireplace to be filled with presents. On the 25th of December, it was the day for opening the presents left by baby Jesus ;)

The bananeiro festivity started with a group of friends that started to get together in a specific place at the old part city center, on Christmas eve before the "consoada" where they drank moscatel and the place had bananas to eat. Its quite recent festivity, not a tradition, well for the ones who started yes, but for the rest is still something new. Pretty way to socialize with friends, different yes, and fun to eat the bacalhau drunk.🙂 Im from Braga btw.. Cheers

1:42 In portugal we have to wait until midnight to open the presents. As a child, I even had it "worse"😂 (in the sense of having to wait to get my gifts) bc my late grandpa's birthday was on the 25th. So my parents used to order everyone to sing happy birthday to him at midnight, give him is gifts AND THEN we could open ours😂. Never the less, I hold those memories in my ❤

I'm from Madeira Island and here, we don't have as traditional cod fish (Bacalhau) as it is, on the mainland. Here the tradition is a little bit different in terms of gastronomy, the most famous is “carne de vinha d’alhos” (pork meat in wine, vinagre and garlic) to eat with bread, but also many others dishes. My favorite and typical Christmas taste and smell is a slice of “honey (from sugar cane) cake” and a glass of liqueur or Madeira wine. And here in Madeira, Christmas Day is a public holiday and also the day after, December 26th, as well as 24 is “tolerancia de ponto” (workers are free from work*) for those who work in government companies and public services. (*this year is also “tolerancia de ponto the day 23)

Try eating Feijoada especially the feijoada à transmontana . Trombas is a Portuguese expression meaning like a long face with a frown , as in the person is mad at you. You will also get a bit of silent treatment.

I am Portuguese but live in Canada and I can tell you that the Portuguese drive a lot faster than Canadians in Canada. Also, we may not have dark bread but Portuguese bread is among the best in the world. Cheers !

There's many varieties of bread in most part of supermarkets.

We can do topless in most part of beaches, even at urban beaches as in Estoril-Cascais. In Costa da Caparica and Meco we have lots of beaches for nudisme and its absolutely normal and its not private beaches or reserved areas...In Comporta- Tróia, there's many places people can practice nudism and is amazing beaches.

Very, very interesting! I´ve been living in Coimbra now for 3 years, and like Madeira a lot! Raised and born in Argentina as son of a German mother, whose husband was her french language teacher and a Russian nobleman with the late Zar, it´s very interesting for me. At 1:55 a very nice dog appears between you two. Of course I say obrigado (I was in Brasil) and recommend to speak English, not Spanish. As a 72 y o widower with an interesting life and having lived in nearly 15 contries, I choose the old kingdom of Portugal and Porto. South of Peniche and Lisbon are Spain IMHO

I think the regulations to restore some abandoned ruins are also kinda too restrictive. Its hard to get some camaras to agree with a simple but modern project. Also, many foreigners would love to come to Portugal and live in more remote areas, which would only positively influence the availability of houses, but you can't legally buy some farm land and build a house to homestead on it. (Exceptions may apply)

I think because Portugal like more to use the land as agriculture. But dwelling can, old houses, farmland. Portugal like to keep in more nature living lifestyle. Like it, I come from busy,modern,life. No need big,big housings investors.

Doing drugs is not a criminal offence in Portugal, But. but if because of you drug addiction You become a problem to society, now you have 2 choices : jail or rehabilitation, the Government will Not allow you to be a problem out on the streets. although with Open Borders , and this Massive Migration , the war on drugs might be on the decline of enforcement, as Crime is on the rise the Police's hands are tied, due Fact they don't want to be labelled Racist.
