No Capture Card Needed: NDI 6 on Linux with OBS
#NDI is a neat piece of software that allows you to send audio and video over a network connection in real time. On #Linux, we can use it as a plugin with #OBS to create all sorts of wacky nonsense.
CORRECTION: I said megabit instead of mebibyte in the bandwidth segment. Senior moment :)

    These videos have really great production quality and your forum looks great too. Good work! Its amazing to see how far the linux desktop experience has come. The only rub right now is latency for realtime playback. Its fine when running linux native reaper but I have some windows only plugins from Neural. I actually tried the tactic of running Reaper itself in wine since Neural uses the awful iLok DRM. The latency was just bad enough to sound like a really really shallow reverb.

      @@VennStone sorry I should have clarified that I don't like the latency. 😭 I think what I'll have to do is if I need to track some guitar and I want realtime playback I'll do it on the Linux side with free or Linux native guitar amp VSTs and then when I want to mix (don't care about latency), then I'll swap over to Reaper running in wine.

    • @JamesHounshell
      @JamesHounshell День назад

      I should have said that the latency in wine cause a delay that ruins the instant feedback of a real amp or realtime audio processing. I find that almost any amount of latency messes with your head/rhythm.

    I just got this card for my home media server. All my files are in h.264 so I almost never transcode, but the few times I do, it nearly pegged my CPU at 100%. It’s a 2008 Intel Xeon E5450 @3.0 GHz, 8GB of DDR2-800 memory, an Intel 120GB SSD, 3TB and 8TB storage drives to run PLEX on Ubuntu Server. Yes, I did the LGA-771 mod. I had to update my Kernel and install Mesa like you said, but it works. Transcodes happen on the card and the CPU stays at IDLE! Great little card for video transcoding and keeping power usage on such an old system down. I used console only version of Ubuntu and it runs at about 350MB of memory usage idle. The SSD keeps the whole thing snappy and gives a good spot for transcoding to operate from while the slower drives are more than capable of keeping up with my needs. The 3TB I use as a share drive on my network and the 8TB is solely for media storage for Plex. I haven’t even hit 3Tb used on it yet, though.

    This is cool in theory until you introduce legacy consoles and HDMI devices that don't support it into the mix. Like the Xbox One or Xbox 360 or OG Xbox or Nintendo Wii with HDMI adapters or Nintendo GameCube with HDMI adapter or Nintendo Wii U or Nintendo Switch or Sony PlayStation 3 or above. Simply, if you're going to be recording consoles, or any other device, a capture card is a guaranteed, best bet. However, if you're going to just be recording computers, a computer, this is better.

      A major issue with getting it onto oddball machines is NDI is all closed source and proprietary, so you'd have to do some pretty crazy shenanigans to force their binaries to work. And, for hardware with CPUs they don't provide binaries for at all, you're SOL.

    I hope it's okay to ask as a linux nooB: I had a gen 1 8i6. I saw there were no linux drivers for the GUI for it, and I want to use it with Reaper. So I went and bought a gen4 2i2. I tried following what directions I could find (I'm on Nobara, which I understand is related to Fedora) and ran into a problem where a popup says it needs a firmware update to work. I went to the link that popup provided and saw some files I am unfamiliar with how to run, such as .deb and tar.gz. I read somewhere else to place a file in a folder as usr/lib/firmware/scarlett2, but no such folder exists on my setup even though I tried installing the main linux/scarlett2 a couple of different ways. I followed the github install directions as best I could understand, typing in various commands but still ran into the same popup/warning. I can't find any more clear instructions on what to do at this point, and the scarlett2 folder still doesn't exist where it is supposed to. Thanks to anyone for any possible help. I really want to get linux working to get away from windows if possible.

    I'm going to try this out. For the money, I think the AVerMedia BU113 Live Streamer Cap 4K is a WAY better deal and you don't have to buy it USED. Goes for $80-$100 new. The AVermedia capture card also supports up 4k resolution and uses USB C instead of USB A. This Magewell maxes out at 2048x2160p? What the hell kind of resultion is that? I don't think they advertise it but, the AVerMedia is Linux compatible. Mine works with Fedora, Mac and PC. Yes, the software is only available for windows but, I haven't needed any software to get it to capture my camera's HDMI in OBS on Windows, Linux or Mac. They do provide a list of compatible cameras and even my unlisted Canon works. Only little idiosyncracy on in OBS on Linux is when you try and select a resultion 4k isn't listed but, it still captures if you set it to default. It will let you select 4k in windows. Case is plastic and I've def stepped on mine but didn't hear it crack so we're looking good.

    • @InterfacingLinux
      @InterfacingLinux Месяц назад

      Does the AVer support hardware video cropping, up/down scaling, de-interlacing, aspect ratio conversion, color format conversion, frame rate conversion, flip/mirror, custom resolutions and custom EDIDs? Can you program that to the deivce and move it between PCs? Because you can with the Magewell and that is beyond handy in my studio. The AVer seems like a nice card for home use.

    • @Logan5Greye
      @Logan5Greye Месяц назад

      @@InterfacingLinux Did some testing and here's what I found. Cropping is supported. They just call it zoom. It's kinda nice bc there's a slider you can adjust then click and drag to pan around. Their software is called AVerMedia CamEngine 4. You can do the basics like crop, transform (mirror/flip/etc). It also has very basic options filters for skin tone, smoothing, virtual backgrounds and even some character effects. There's even an option to record using Vulkan or OpenGl. Supported resolutions are up to 4k 30p all the way down to 720p. There's also some basic layouts for where you want the capture to be displayed on your monitor. Do you want 1/2 the screen to display the capture of just a small portion in the bottom left/right. Very basic. As for colorspace OBS allows me to adjust between REC 709, 601, 2100 PQ, 2100 HLG. No options to deinterlance with the included software. There was another program you could download to update the firmware and update the other bundled software. It sounds like our needs are different. For me, I just needed something that could capture the 4k output from my camera. It looks really good. I connect a Sony ZV-E10 via USB and use the stream function to capture via OBS and it does not look nearly as good as it does from the HDMI+Capture card. What kind of footage are you capturing that needs to be de-interlaced? What sources are you capturing that need their aspect ratio converted? Are you going from 4:3 to 16:9 or the other way around? 2048x1080 is such an odd resolution imo. If you capture 1080p or less then I guess that's reasonable. It'd be nice if there was a firmware update that let you capture up 4k 30p/24p. I apologize if I sounded salty earlier. I watched this video again bc I noticed the aforementioned quality difference when capturing over USB directly to a computer in OBS vs a capture card. I put in an offer for 1 on ebay. Before I noticed it didn't capture 4k it had already shipped. I'll still give it a try and maybe I won't even need if I can play around with the USB Streaming settings on the ZV-E10 and improve the quality. All this and I'm realizing I commented on this video 5 months ago talking up the AVermedia BU113 hah ha! Keep up the good work. All the best!
