This is sort of a love letter to one of my favourite games of all time more so than an actual in-depth review of the game. As I say at the end of the video this is the first time I've tried something like this, so all feedback is greatly appreciated. I basically taught myself video and audio editing skills in two days and made this - whatever the hell it is. Thank you guys for watching! Twitch:...

does the game have faction-exclusive stuff? thak uuu❤
it does! although it's not a ton. It's more a matter of different playstyles than content. The faction-specific content is mostly confined to chapter 2, afterwards, it's pretty much all the same.
@marceltheshelly2030 oh great.i was just lookin for any reason to replay it,on my ps5🥰 i find it has so much in common with 'soulslike' games
@@franciscabdul2828 it does, although it's more forgiving I'd say

What is different about risen and risen 09?
I'm not sure what you mean. Risen came out in 2009. It has since received one patch when THQ released it for the new consoles but apart from that nothing has changed.
I never liked it when devs use a chapter structure in games like this. It's far too limiting. It's better to just have a fully open world, anything goes, and let players figure it out on their own.
Fair enough! I thought it was cool that the world changed in between chapters. Not sure if that is something that was also possible with a seamless open-world, perhaps the devs resources were limited in that regard.
No intro Video ?
Nope, somehow OBS refused to record it, so I cut it from the RUclips upload.
The Gurus and the rest of the swampcamp always did their own thing in their own special way. They didn't have any plans to implement mouse support for the first gothic at all, only after a couple of game journos asked for it they did. You were supposed to play Gothic with Keyboard only, in 2001. I think that tells you everything you need to know. Why their Games were so great and why they never got bigger international wise, I mean, apart from our fellow gamers in the east. I hope that we will get something like Gothic again some day. 😐
I hope so, too! I've got high hopes for the Gothic Remake after the gameplay trailer recently.
The demise of the studio is rather sad, especially considering how niche and unique their formula was. There are likely many, many points where they zigged when they should have zagged, but I feel as though the biggest mistake they made was with the scope of Gothic 3 (one of my favourite games btw) - it was way too vast, yet lacked depth. From that point, they started playing catch up, and once they switched to the pirate theme for Risen 2, they essentially set their doom in stone. The reception that the first Elex game got was also heart breaking, because I feel as though that was their last chance to make a first impression. I love Elex, but shit, they just kept making the same faux pas. Really sad to see them go.
Despite Elex' reception apparently that game was their best selling game of all time though, which is crazy to think about. They/their publisher just messed up with Elex II. But even if Elex II had performed better financially I think Embracer would've still gotten rid of PB because of how long it would've taken them and how much money it would've cost to create another game.

Hell yeah! Definitely gonna go through and watch all of these. I don't think they've made a pure stealth game that quite rivals this series. Thief 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games ever, and I definitely want to see how someone totally new to the series handles the shit this game throws at you 😂 Thanks for giving it a shot! ✌️
Thank you! Unfortunately I haven't finished the game, but I think I gave it a decent shot :D

Hopefully some news soon. Playing Elex 2 after finishing 1 in January, and I can say that it’s just as good, and better in some ways, than the original. I’m really grateful actually that we got a sequel given how cult their games are… I hope PB at least throws out a crowdfunding option if any potential deals to save them don’t materialise. I’m sure many would be happy to support and it might send a message to publishers
Yeah, tbh it gives me hope that apparently they haven't been shut down yet, at least there's been no further news. So that makes me think that something is going on behind the scenes, fingers crossed!
Thanks for replying! What other games beyond PB do you enjoy?
@@binnocorp No worries! I mostly play other RPGs like the Elder Scrolls games, but also dabbled in Survival and Souls-Likes. I'm currently working on a review for Fable that I hope will be up at some point :D
This whole ordeal is very sad, I also did a similar video about it because I feel so strongly about Piranha Bytes. I really hope they can come right somehow. Gothic 2 was my favourite game of theirs followed by Gothic 1. I have replayed those games so many times 😢
Are you mental?
Elex 1 is actually better because you have different animation for melee weapons and ranged weapons were better, while in Elex 2 you swing all your melee weapons like a baseball bat and ranged weapons have just 1 fire mod. That's a shame, i really wanted to like this game Good review, 1 sub from me :)
Thank you! Yeah, overall Elex II was unfortunately a disappointment...
Jesus the gothic community is ass. Two comments and both self-rightous fart huffers. Anyways I enjoyed that playthrough, it was perfect for a lazy sunday afternoon.
Gothic 1-2-3 were some of the best and most fun RPG experiences ive ever had... I wish them luck!
Agreed, me too!
I really tried so hard to like Elex, and I bought the second game just to support them -- but never even installed it. However, I guess it's all for naught. No news surely can't mean good news. Commercially speaking, the basic knowledge that something profitable is in the oven, some kind of announcement, would be in the open almost instantly. It's bad news that are often reluctant to be drip-fed to the general public. So, with heavy heart -- by now -- I go with the assumption that PB is really dead. They tried, but ... have left the building.
fair enough, I don't think Elex is for everyone! I eventually got into it but it took me some time and Elex II was a bit disappointing. I'm kind of thinking that maybe if the company still exists they are negotiating something in the background, otherwise the studio may have been shut down already. As of right now it still exists, although I don't know in what form.
From what I read in the WOG forums, though mostly between the lines, is that the house they were all situated in, isn't being used as a workplace anymore. Like, it used to be so that you could them taking coffee breaks outside and what not. And that all doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
@@Jammet Interesting, I hadn't read that yet. I did know that they probably weren't working on anything anymore at the moment, though, and as long as the company officially still exits I'll naively remain hopeful :D
Thank you for this update . Really sad news since *Gothic* for me is the most impressive game I ever played. I also loved Gothic II , and Gothic III , but really , playing *Gothic I* was for me an unmatched feeling ,everything in this first game was almost perfect !! Well , I guess every beginning has an end as well…
Thank you for your feedback! Yes, it's going to be a sad day when they announce that the studio is actually gone but who knows, I still have a tiny bit of hope left.
Its sad cuz it was one of my absolute favourite studios especially for the gothic and risen series...but i have to admit they missed to go with the times, the gothic scheme was simply done after they reused it for like 7 games....
I see where you're coming from, a little more change would've been good but at the same time they shouldn't have changed too much either. It's a tricky one but their games are just special, there's nothing like them and it would be a shame if there aren't going to be any more of them.
I just want to say this is an extremely good review. I have been on the fence on whether or not to get this game. You well articulated the story/premise, the entertainment value, the criticism and the setting while having a clear warning for the two spoilers (i appreciate the understanding of the two different kinds of spoilers) all in a well structured and easily digestible video Well done! I wish you had went a bit more in depth in the gameplay (like what melee is like at the end, lvl system, stamina system, magic system, etc) but this is enough information for me to get the game. Thanks
Wow, thank you! This is very kind and valuable feedback. I agree with you, the gameplay side of things is definitely secondary to everything else I talk about in the video. I will try to go into more detail regarding the gameplay in future videos. Thanks again!
@@marceltheshelly2030 I'm glad I could encourage an up and coming creator. Just to add a bit more. If you don't want to even get into the gameplay, you can mention you won't get into that. My personal tastes prioritizes the story over the gameplay (which is why this game sounds interesting) but the gameplay is an important aspect. It's how the developers intend you to interact with the story.
@@fallenfriend2860 that's also a good point, thank you again!
It's definitely the best game they made after Risen 1.
I think I'm with you on this one. I loved Risen but I'm probably biased here because I grew up with it and every time I play it the Nostalgia hits hard.
Great video man, def make elex 2 and risen 3
Thank you! I've become very busy with other stuff but am currently working on a "Piranha Bytes News" video that will hopefully be out soon. Elex 2 is probably up next. I haven't played Risen 3 in ages but am currently replaying Risen 2, so will probably make a video about that in the future as well and then move on to Risen 3.
I’ve played the game through from end to end. Everyone talks about the stamina system being a problem. It’s not. The hit boxes and timing are the problem. You have to learn to meta these limitation, either that or learn enough about the game economy to drug and buff your way out of it. In practice, you’ll end up doing both. It’s too bad. Because other than that, this game is pretty much perfect. It’s the only 3rd person ARPG I’ve played in the past ten years that that rewards exploration MORE than old Bethesda games. The vertical development is positively sick - probably the best ever. My chief complaint is Elex 2 doesn’t carry over anything from the amazing choose your own adventure playthrough you’ll have with this one.
I agree, once you get used to the stamina system you can work with it, but for someone who isn't used to it, it can be tricky in the beginning. I also agree that the exploration is better than in Bethesda games and it's a shame that this game and other PB games are not better known for it. And finally, I also agree with your statement about Elex 2. It feels a little more linear, although I did like the added variety through the new factions. But I'll go into more detail in regards to that in another video :)
Should I play Elex or Elex 2 ?
That's a tough one. Elex 2 is probably more accessible but it obviously contains spoilers for Elex. I'd probably recommend playing Elex first, but do it on the easy difficulty and see how you get on. If you like the setting but not the game you could just move on to Elex 2, as the gameplay is superior in my opinion.
happy YT raccomended me such a well made video .... for once :D
Thank you! That means a lot :)
I think "Dead world" would have been a more fitting name. The combat and RPG systems aren't bad but the world is completely devoid of humanoid conflict, which would have worked well in this setting. A lot more stimulating than fighting copy/paste critters the whole game. I found it quite disappointing how little they did with lore in relation to the gameworld.
You're right, there is no active conflict between the factions going on in the background, but I'm not aware of other games where that was the case, at least not on an impressive scale and I don't think the developers had the resources for something like this. On top of that the aim of the game is to unite the factions against the Albs and I believe there was a truce at the time between the different factions, at least the Berserkers and Clerics. Despite this, there are actually battles between the Outlaws and Berserkers in which you can participate during the respective factions questlines and of course, there is a battle between the free factions and the Albs at the end, so the world isn't completely devoid of conflict. Nevertheless, I do believe it would've been cool to witness more of that with random patrols fighting each other, but as I said, I don't think that was a focus of the already overstretched developing team.
@@marceltheshelly2030 No offense but apologetics don't help make games better. Stating it "wasn't the focus" is the whole point. It was just lazy and/or under-developed. I can't actually think of any decent RPG where the game world is so painfully barren and lifeless and so utterly detached from lore. We can call it whatever we want, won't change that the gameplay is what it is and explains why it wasn't popular. All the nuts and bolts are already there. Technically they didn't have to do much at all. Add in AI that already exist label them as different factions and give them warfare AI. Anything would have been better than just leaving the word blank like they did.
@@surg23 I think for a team of 30 PB did a great job with the game and I love it's world, so in that sense I agree that there's no need for apologetics. Of course the game could've been better but I don't think there's any game I've ever played where I thought "this is perfect, they shouldn't have done anything differently". There's plenty to find in terms of lore and I think it's pretty well fleshed out, too, although it can't compare to something like The Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect or Dragon Age, but then again, I don't think it's fair to expect that. But it's okay to have different opinions so we can agree to disagree :)
It had the same gameplay feel that the Gothic games had, that's all that matters.
@@marceltheshelly2030 I disagree about there being "plenty" to find, at least in contrast to typical RPG expectations. There aren't anywhere near enough places of interest, much less meaningful interactions to be had at the few that do exist. As a result it translates into a stale and anaemic gameplay loop of grinding critters and not much else. There's a chronic lack of diversity of gameplay due to no factional warfare and copy/paste mobs. It doesn't make for an exciting or stimulating RPG experience. Unique? perhaps, but that evidently wasn't enough to compensate for a lifeless world detached from lore in every way that matters. It's just a shockingly average game. So much potential wasted.
Such a great game. Just got the second. Gonna play it after FF Rebirth.
The second one I really enjoyed, too, but many people were disappointed by it, unfortunately.
One of the things I've noticed playing the gothic games and risen is that they are in the way their characters are set up, quite German. Their conversations flow a lot better if you play them in German. There are these specific ways of doing thing programmed into the npc's that you only really get with Germans. This isn't something bad about them, I quite enjoy it myself but I can see how playing a game not written in english for an english speaking audience but translated wouldn't have the same appeal to the wider anglo audience. A gripe I have with the games tough is that you can explore a lot and you can find a lot of things. But there are only a few unique things to find that are worth finding. A healing root here or a healing root there, it's all healing root But then again I'm a filthy swamp dweller and for all you know I grow and or smoke swamp weed. At least there are no bikes in the game so you can't take those from us.
I know what you mean, I'm German myself and have played most PB games in both German and English and most of the time they're definitely better in German. You're also right about the exploration, I still find it more fun than in most other Open-World RPGs, though.
A very nostalgic game
Absolutely, I love it!
I'll give you the view but I shouldnt play it and I wont. gg
Haha, I'll take what I can get
Risen experience: 1. Decide to play as a mage. 2. You don't even get a spell until chapter 2. 3. Ragequit. Great game for fighter classes though.
Haha, I know what you mean :D I feel like PH has never been that great at making mage playthroughs fun, it just takes too long to get access to spells
Some might say it is more rewarding that way. But hey 🙂
@@humblehornet621 I just always found that by the time I get to be able to learn magic I was already so strong in other skills that there was no point in learning magic, so I didn't find it very rewarding :D
@@marceltheshelly2030 yeah, I get that. I think it is a tricky thing to balance as mages late game are beasts 🙂
@@humblehornet621 I need to reply the game as a mage, it's been ages! I recently did a Inquisition playthrough were I focused on fire magic though, that was fun.
i've played risen 1 and 2 for the first time recently. Risen 1 was awesome for the first chapters to start falling off in the later ones - with the last being the worst (especially the anti-climatic puzzle ending), but still, great time. I've picked up 2 and was disappointed about the world, that almost no one seems to understand what have we done in the first game. The combat was i guess a little bit better, but then i've picked up a gun for my character and the game started to be really easy and tedious. I have not finished it as i encountered game-breaking bug and didn't pick up Risen 3 coz of this. Expected to get a connected story between all three games, not some loose knits between each game. I suspect it is better from business pov - you can pick up any game you want without playing rest of them. I think the game is already very old - if you want to play it, do it right now, as the jankiness will become even more evident in the future :/
As I said in the video I agree for the most part. Risen 2 I wasn't a big fan of on release but I haven't played through it in ages, so I'm not quite sure how I'd find it now. The same is true for Risen 3, although I seem to remember that I found it much more enjoyable than Risen 2. So it may still be worth giving it a shot if you like PB games!
Future planet, you have seen this.
I'm afraid I don't understand, haha

incredible to me that you did NOT choose the german voices. The german dub is the most iconic thing ever
Well, while I am German and can thus speak the language I've been living in English-speaking countries for 6 or 7 years and wanted to stream in English as well. The people who at that time watched my streams were (and mostly still are) predominantly English-Speaking as well or at least use the langauge online to communicate with others. So even though the German VO is much better than the English one that's why I chose English. And the English one does have a certain charm, I think, because it is as bad as it is :D

nice video! but dont compare morrowind with gothic...gothic was way ahead of its time!!! Especially in ways of immersion, voiced characters, world building and so much more...Morrwind was pretty much the beginning of the shitty random rpgs we got today!
Thank you! The games are quite different from each other, you're right about that but because they came out around the same time and Morrowind is known more widely I thought it was a good comparison. I still think Bethesda games are the only games comparable to Piranha Bytes Games but they still offer very different "flavours" in regards to Open-World RPGs and I think I mostly prefer PB over Bethesda. Anyways, thanks for watching the video, it means a lot!
