She make some important points but spoils it by overstating her case. If you look at the actions of today's 'woke' social justice warriors as opposed to what they say, it is obvious that they must believe in human rights and the possibility of progress towards greater justice in society. Why else,for example ,would white people take up the cause of black people being discriminated against? Does anyone argue that black people should have anything beyond equal treatment in western societies, no they don't. It is a call for justice. The 'woke' element is to reject various forms of political discourse as corrupted by power, especially discourse from those outside an oppressed group, and prefer direct action. It is a sophisticated intellectual way of being anti-intellectual. With Foucault's example held high. Yes this may be a dangerous weapon that can turn on those who wield it, but given the example of centuries of cultural supremacist colonialism it is understandable as a strategy. The best response is to persuade woke people that they are in fact, by their actions, upholding a universalist view of rights and justice. It is also worth trying to show them, and this is a point that Neiman does not make, that if you are going to focus on identity, older forms of more traditional identity are important to many human beings and cannot simply be ignored.

I welcome Nieman's blow for clarity. THe distinction between traditional /rational/Enlightenment Left and the recent Woke variants is absolutley necessary. If you favour the original "positive" meaning of the word Woke, then the new Nabobs of the Left could be described as thinking of themselves as woke and then contaminating the concept with currents of postmodernism.

Neiman is woker than she lets on, since she gave full support to BLM after the 2020 Floyd media orgy, and has perpetuated the lie that cops go after blacks for presumed racial reasons (not simply their high violent crime rates). And again, what does this have to do with wokeness? Perhaps Susan didn’t choose that. The plebeian enlightenment? Perhaps explains why enlightenment, born naturally as a reaction to the Supremacism of the 18th century, did not halt it’s hideous progress into the next two centuries. Thank the Davids Graeber and Wengrow for reminding us that possibly, the enlightened were enlightened by a member of a culture the enlighteneds civilization was about to snuff out.

This is very good. But she appears to have entirely missed the point of evolutionary psychology, suggesting that it is reductive, concealing some essential "reality" about power and how the world "really" works. I do not believe it makes this claim in any way. This is the same mistake made by those people who thought that Richard Dawkins book was about how human selfishness drives all human evolution. It is a very elementary error.

Given that the term ‘Woke’ has been reduced to a meaningless boo word by the right and this has been grabbed up by elements of the radical left to pretend that there aren’t really deeply concerning aspects to the ideas underpinning many other of the today’s activist movements the clarity of this talk is really welcome, particularly in the clarity of her arguments. Sadly the same can’t be said of most those critiquing her which indulges the worst aspects of academia, the kind of dancing on the head of pin mudding of the waters or straight up strawmanning that achieves little but reversing the clarity the original talk brought. Appeals to distant literal definitions of Woke does nothing but avoid addressing the very questions Neiman looks to answer.

Fantastic playing. An actual live performance. So much better than all these guitarists who are using words like "live" or "concert" in the description but there are edits all over the place. Which makes it very fake. This is actual live. The performance is fantastic and her tone production and interpretations are superb. Really enjoyed everything about this performance.

Where are the names of the performers? Why are they disrespected and not given credits?

Fantastic performance Daniela, bravo. I love the new piece by Vincent Lindsey-Clarke and it had a wonderful build up, with all of the previous variations. It sounded so fresh at the end after all that had gone before. I’m sure it will become very well know and widely recorded and performed in the future. We were very lucky to see this world premiere performance. Thank you once again.
