    Graet informative video, could you comment about the timing of the graft.specifically here in the northeast I am located in zone 7a Long Island, ny. What would be a good time in the spring to try this technique, thanks in advance.

    Wait a sec..... When cloning aby plant aren't you supposed to IMMEDIATELY put the clone in the root tone? Doesn't waiting get air bubbles in the clone?

    • @ryanscottlove
      @ryanscottlove Месяц назад

      Would be interesting to experiment. Might make more of a difference with small cuttings that aren't lignified and dry out quickly. With larger cuttings like this, some even leave them exposed in a dark humid enclosure for a period to form a callus before planting them in soil.

    Hi do you need to water the air layering ball? If yes, how often? Thanks

    • @ryanscottlove
      @ryanscottlove Месяц назад

      I'd say it just depends on the ball you are using and the climate you are in. If the soil inside begins to get too dry I would add just enough water to keep it from drying out.

    Weird how video after video, they use ProMix. Never seen it at Walmart or Home Depot or my local nursery in northern AZ or southern CA. All of them sell good old Miracle Is it an eastern U.S. thing? Grow, to which I add extra perlite to improve drainage. Cheaper generic potting soils like Member’s Mark have too many wood chips. I did learn from the Lazy Dog Farm RUclips videos to add an extra half inch of pure perlite on top if I’m rooting cuttings indoors, to keep fungus gnats from reaching the soil and laying eggs in it.

    • @ryanscottlove

      Sometimes I mix my own version using peat moss and perlite to just skip wood chips all together!

    • @ryanscottlove
      @ryanscottlove 3 месяца назад

      Humidity dome totally optional. In fact, some people just push a longer cutting in the ground and it roots out. (higher humidity and precipitation probably increase odds of this working) If you haven't yet, check out Jan's channel (@FruitTreeAddict) She grows mulberries in central Florida. =)

    Jonsteen tree company advises to SOAK the roots for minimum 15min before planting. Longer is better. Problem is, when I do that all the soil which arrived with my trees washes away and I am left with a muddy mess so I cant plant my new tree with some of the soil it has been growing in. HOWEVER, so far it does not seem to have harmed any of my 19 my little trees. !

    Any reason to not go directly into the ground or does this increase survivability by being able to keep partly shaded for awhile?

    • @ryanscottlove
      @ryanscottlove 7 месяцев назад

      Once cut from the tree the air layer is suddenly completely dependent on the roots it formed so like you said would keep them shaded for a bit. That said, if I put it in the ground I would just add a shade cloth and keep the ground moist.

    Ive done two air layer on a Mulberry. One died, but sprouted new growth below the AL. The second one did fine until a storm broke AL off right below the container. I guess while it was being wipped around it broke all the roots off. When i removed the container the roots stayed in the dirt and it had very few still attached. I potted the AL and it died in few days. Ive tried doing cuttings on Mulberry but so far they have all died. I have three pots with cuttings in them right now, but its getting hot now in SE Texas, so i won't be surprised if they fail.

    • @charlesfoster8814
      @charlesfoster8814 7 месяцев назад

      @ryanscottlove Thanks for taking the time to reply! It's too common for creators to abandon their thread. I checked some cutting this morning I started on June 3rd...I removed everything except the last leaf on each cutting. One pencil size cutting has a bud popping with a leaf on it about mid cutting! The others are still green, even the leaf at the top. So I might have some unknown variety Mulberrys in the future. I found a couple Mulberry trees in my old neighborhood. The last time I was at my wife's mother's house, I swung by the tree and cut a limb off. The tree hangs over a 6' wood fence...trucks are constantly tearing limbs off! This tree has a ton of berries on it for the last two years. So I know it's a major producer!

I do remember I tried a near immediate graft on at least one of them from this video as an experiment and it was not successful. For me, the first season they end up looking like a "bushy" stick... but as the roots develop the branches get longer.

      With the graft in this video I was trying to have contact on both sides and on the bottom where the small wedge was cut. I've heard that strong initial pressure helps with persimmon grafts fusing... so maybe the unconventional zip ties helped.
