Shop Safety - a tip that could save your life.

It is likely because I was trained as a combat medic that I am quite safety conscious, especially when it concerns the risk of life threatening injuries. Following a discussion on Facebook I made this video where I give my thoughts and views on what I will do in case I suffer a serious injury while being alone in my shop. Small note: I shot this video in about an hour and made at least one erro...

Not so White Oak
Просмотров 1042 года назад
"Smoking oak" or the process of changing the colour of white oak by using ammonia is quite new to me so I wanted to do a few experiments, just to see the effects first hand. I have no idea why it is called "smoked oak" - it does not involve smoking in any way (something I do not wish to advocate anyway) and as you'll see in the video, the process even works in freezing temperatures.

I am imagining a wooden-layered-sandwich device... with an empty core that I I can slip to onto wingnuts of many sizes to apply greater torque. I many need to cobble my own together...

      Cross drill the pipe and insert a metal rod (or a long bolt), then you have more than enough leverage. That being said, I have found that I can tighten the wingnuts more than adequately simply by gripping the metal tube.

    I was not able to catch from the video, but where there any difference in colour for the sides facing down towards the ammoniac, and the sides facing away? Also seeing how deep it penetrated, I got curious on how it handles being sanded, will we start seeing differences in colour or is the deep penetration so consistent that it will handle even serious sanding well?

    • @noremorsewoodworking2258
      @noremorsewoodworking2258 2 года назад

      No, not any appreciable difference as it is the ammoniac vapours that do the work and I kept everything in a closed box, allowing the vapours to be as equally distributed as I could. As for the sanding, I think it should hold up well unless you sand away several millimeters - but you could always repeat the process if you end up going too far with sanding or planing.

    A scissor jack can be a terribly useful thing to have around the shop. Most every 20-year old junked car's trunk has one, so if you find an auto scrap yard, they'll likely give you one for asking. As for using one for a router lift, the idea is downright brilliant. You have a potential hit video on your hands. You mentioned backlash; I'll assume by this you meant that the bit doesn't drop or push back in after a lift, but do you notice any (sideways) mechanical slop in use? If there's even a little bit of lateral play, it'll probably chatter at speed on hard woods. A loose jack would be a deal-breaker. The point is, if the idea were released to a large audience, that might become a contentious point of criticism. A second, 'locking' mechanism may be in order; perhaps some sort of cam lever-lock underneath that squeezes the top of the jack, securing it in place. It's tough to make things simple. I'd love to further consider/develop this idea when I get some time. Of course, I'm not the type to steal ideas, so I'll 1) wait to see if you release a follow-up, and 2) give this video attribution if I ever mention the idea. Wildly original stuff. Until then, thanks.

    • @noremorsewoodworking2258
      @noremorsewoodworking2258 2 года назад

      I was expecting a bit of vertical "backlash" but haven't noticed any, as the spring in the router is quite strong and the jack seems to hold quite well. As for horisontal "slop", I have not noticed any, probably because the router is mounted very firmly to the tabletop and the jack simply pushes against the internal spring(s) of the router. All in all, the whole setup works as I expected - it is a cheap router in a cheap table with a cheap jack, so in some respects it even supercedes my expectations - it is certainly better than what I could have built myself.

      @@noremorsewoodworking2258 Have you seen some of the crazy lift gizmos people build just to avoid removing their router? Those are way too much trouble! The jack idea looks like a little bit of tinkering, but at least it's not _too_ over-the-top.

    Excellent! Do you know where I can now buy such a tool? (Or... is your tool still unique?) Another question: is it possible to design a similar tool, only one that doesn't need electric power to screw on/remove said wingnut? Thanks!

    • @noremorsewoodworking2258
      @noremorsewoodworking2258 2 года назад

      I have only made this one for myself, but it should be relatively easy to reproduce it. If you don't want to use electric power, just use it by hand, it works quite well that way too. I only use the drill when I want to remove the wingnuts from the very long screws. I can easily tighten the nuts down by hand, simply by gripping the tool :) If you don't want/need the drill, you can very simply cut a couple of slots in one end of a piece of suitable pipe - and if you want to make the "handle" easier to grip, just wrap some gaffa-tape around it.
