One of the things I definitely was disappointed the most in is Disney/Pixar’s “Chekov’s Gun” issues. They set up a lot of very interesting situations with their decisions in earlier movies and “forget” to pay it off. In Inside Out, they made a conscious decision to gender code the emotions in everyone’s heads. Riley’s Father has all Male coded emotions, Riley’s Mother has all Female coded emotions, but Riley has a mixture of Male coded and Female coded. This would indicate that Riley is likely Non-Binary. The second wave of emotions in the sequel are also mixed gender coded, but they make it absurdly direct that Riley is a girl in the second movie and doesn’t have any NB identity. I was intrigued to see how they’d pay off that setup but it never actually played out

Magnifico was such an odd choice. He was fully set up as someone who is trying so hard to be good they end up doing bad. And then they literally read a book to us about how he’s not redeemable, and now his wife who seemed to genuinely love him doesn’t even care? Either make a nuanced villain or don’t….

35:42 Actually in Chapter 28 of the novel, Inside Out 2: All in the Mind, they do have a moment of vulnerability, so THE GIRLS WERE GENUINELY CONCERNED! Also Riley's Anxiety Attack was so intense, it had me pretty panicked, literally shaking in my seat and fucking crying, and while I haven't exactly experienced an anxiety attack per se, I couldn't help but see myself in Riley in that moment, especially as someone with moderate Anxiety.

Man, I can't blame Magnifico for being angry at his people. Imagine working hard all your life studying and perfecting your powers of sorcery hoping to help people make their dreams come true, only to end up being surrounded by a bunch of lazy, entitled dullards who prefer to wish for an easy shortcut to their ambitions rather than actually put in any amount of effort. I'd be fucking pissed too. I'd probably turn into one of those ironic monkey's paw-type genies that twist people's wishes against them. If I could change Magnifico, I'd make it so that he could still grant wishes but as a tradeoff, he could never grant wishes for himself. Over time he grew envious of all the people whose wishes he granted, giving them good health and love and prosperity and stuff like that, meanwhile he's just the guy who grants wishes, and he feels most people take him for granted. Now he's forced to pass the torch on to Asha as his apprentice, after which he'll lose his powers forever, and without them he feels he has nothing. So he cooks up some scheme to manipulate people's wishes for his own gain, or getting some other dark magic to use for himself (maybe playing on a theme of "making dreams come true" being twisted into "making nightmares come true"). As for wishes, instead of the whole memory-erasing thing, I'd make the wishes work similar to how they're described in The Princess And The Frog, in that "a wish can only get you halfway there". Having your wish granted wouldn't make it immediately come true, per se, but it would give you the tools and knowledge you'd need to achieve it. For example, if someone wished for riches, maybe it would give you a shovel, a boat, and a treasure map to a faraway island. Or if you wanted to become a great artist, you'd be granted a bunch of art supplies. Maybe people would claim the wishes are cursed because they either don't come true or end up killing the ones making them, but that's mainly because their goals were too ambitious or risky. I don't know, I'm just spitballing at this point. I haven't even seen this movie but everything I've seen and heard about it fails to impress me.

i lterally paused this video midway through in order to watch all of Andi Mack because its so cool that a disney show portrayed panic attacks and discalculia in seemingly a well represented manner. great show, does a lot of good mental disability rep as well as rep when it comes to Jewish and Chinese traditions. and there's a gay character! i then proceeded to watch the remainder of this video, very good video essay :) thank you for giving me a cool show to watch

My biggest problem with the movie is its timeframe, in like 2/3 days Riley 1) "gains" anxiety, 2) lets it completely take over her life, 3) has a panic attack, 4) apologizes for acting out of line and learns how to handle her anxiety.

Ok another thing I disslike is that ROSAS-which we all know its the name of roses and the color pink (rosa/rosado)-was mainly WHITE and had like 2 flowers in the whole setting. Also, the weird "saba" thing?? Culturaly it makes little sense to me. In the long hispanic history the hebrew community was a minority?? Like super small?? Why not choose a more proud comunity from Spain??? rather than?? Whatever that was??

Maybe this is too niche of a reference, but I think Starboy in general, al even more being silent (stars dont talk) would have looked like Nightlight, from The Guardians of childhood (the book series that inspired the Rise of the Guardians, with my love Jack Frost). However, I would have LOVED a william joyce style for this movie

So wait, they never address the jab about the credit card? Like... No Riley shouldn't have said the bed wetting bit, but how is that "a secret" worth the reaction it got when Riley might have confided what was an absolutely dark moment in her life to people she thought she trusted about when she TRIED TO RUN AWAY FROM HOME AND NEARLY MADE IT? Are you kidding me?? Sure it might have been vague and another teen probably also did something similar but knowing the context that it was a jab AT RILEY was also an unwarranted "haha it was only a joke, you're mad because your guilty conscience is outing you" moment. I can't blame Riley for firing back on that even if no one else knew what the undertone was. Especially after the "not telling her" about high school thing. That was kind of shit, too.

I liked the movie, but the pacing was ackward

I agree so much about the film not being as good or as impactful as the first while not being terrible, and a lot of the conversations I've had about it don't end up being productive bc we usually aren't talking about the same things. Like you say in the vid, there is a lot of narrative stuff and character development issues that hold the movie back, and I think it's great to analyze those things and point out flaws or personal gripes. Some people, though, aren't looking to do that and they just relate to the portrayal of anxiety and the panic attack, or trying to fit in as a teenager. And while it isn't bad or wrong to judge a movie based on your own personal ability to connect to it, it's fundamentally a different topic of conversation than "what does the movie do right and what could it improve on as it operates as a work of art?" It's also EXTREMELY subjective and, honestly, not an indicator of quality! This is definitely not a phenomenon exclusive to Inside Out but it is a little frustrating when you are trying to discuss a movie's artistic integrity/merits or critique it and somebody says "I disagree with what you said because I, personally, connected to the media" instead of trying to engage with it in the same way you are.

I think the whole point of not having one of her friends/teammates help Riley with the anxiety is because of the reality of it all. No one has ever been there for me, in public or not when having an attack, because it’s awkward. When have you been there for an acquaintance when they are having a panic attack?

Honestly the genderfluidness they put into the film really stood out to me being a genderfluid person who is always down upon. It made me feel really seen

I personally really don't like the new emotions. Their functions can easily be fulfilled by the original emotions, making old emotions' characters seem pointless in the movie. I don't really care what's with my brain chemistry, but I think I am an anxious person, yet I've never had anything close to a panic attack, especially for the movie's plot reasons. So I didn't buy into the movie's portrayal of Anxiety. The movie kinda just didn't make me feel anything.

Before watching this, I would like to say that the 2nd movie made me anxious and I can’t watch it again despite how good it may have been. I guess it achieved its purpose of the teenage experience.

I don't know if its pointed out but when theres texts that is associated with The Director the T's in words was always lower case almost looks like a cross. Which if you think about it the director and she stands for could be interpreted as the rigid vews of religions (like Christianity) about the LGBTQ+. Like in 31:04 31:48 31:51

I think this movie was forced to come out early and it shows. The thing you mentioned with the layoffs, Disney wanting to focus more on sequels, one of the major points of this video being that so much felt like it was missing, and the amount of deleted scenes that honestly felt like they would've made the movie better. It's a decent enough film that was released when it was cause Disney was desperate for money.

I wish we could get a spin-off show or something to show the perspective of Riley's friends in this movie. It would add a lot more depth to see what emotions they're feeling throughout this whole situation (and maybe make them feel like real characters for once).
