Thanks for your videos. I've had great success with carpet in my basement for 15 years. It's remained dry and keeps the basement warm/cozy. I'm looking to upgrade now, and open to ideas. I'd like to stay away from tile (too cold). What recommendations do you have flooring that would offer the benefits of warmth/coziness other than carpet, if any? Thanks in advance.
@jwelsh2 question for you. What would be the reason to change from carpet if you enjoy it so much? Thank you for your support and comment.
@@renovistadesignbuild Fair question. I've enjoyed the carpet but it needs to be replaced (stained). So I'm happy to do carpet again, but looking for any recommendations if any material provides the warmth and quiet of carpet. Thank you!
Great video and information!
Glad it was helpful!
Forget the stairs, did y’all see how neat and clean that yard is! Good Lord!
Thank you 😊
Sorry pal do not mislead people telling them there is no floor prep with LVP because you are dead wrong.
Do you mean you often have to level the floor? What other prep? I’m thinking about using LVP
@ if you’re going over ceramic tile you have to make sure the manufacturer of the product you’re going to install does not require any skim coating. Also if you’re subfloor is plywood you have to make sure that all the joints are even and no movement in the subfloor and if it’s a concrete subfloor if there are any high spots that we like to call a crown in the floor you definitely need to grind It down and if there are really low dips in the floor you have to fill them in. Now that doesn’t have to be perfect because a lot of LVP is very forgiving but some are not very forgiving. If you plan on using LVP I would suggest life proof LVP and you can get that at Home Depot. That product is awesome and very forgiving. Any other ?s feel free to ask. I’ve been doing flooring since 1987 and LVP since it came out when they first started glueing it down to the snap n click they have out now.
@@3rdGenFireChicken Thanks for the Lifeproof recommendation! My house / basement was built in 1927. I’m lucky I never get water and I have good ceiling height, but the concrete is definitely uneven in places with some divots, cracks and probably some crowns. The floor also gets a bit higher in one of the corners. I was thinking about either A) having it framed out first and then doing some self-leveling cement in each room/space followed by LVP. Or B) using a product like Dricore first, which you are probably familiar with (all in one vapor barrier + OSB subfloor) and then LVP over it. Appreciate any suggestions! Also would you consider first applying some sort of sealer/waterproofer like Drylock? Thanks!
Nobody can really tell you the best floor for your basement. It all depends what you want. Some people want it comfy and warm so go with carpet. If you want longevity go with a great LVP. But I would first seal the concrete every inch of it since basement are always damp. Also maybe install a sound proofing approved of course under the LVP so it’s not sitting right on the concrete even though you sealed it. But just remember other than tile or carpet whatever you install make sure you seal that concrete so no moisture will effect you’re LVP

Basement finished 45 years ago. 2x2s strapped to concrete with batts in-between. Recently opened some walls for remodeling. Zero mold. Not sure why you're so quick to spew BS statements. 🤡
What would you recoment if concret is insulated on outside
I'm helping my parents frame a room in the basement. We live in the Midwest Central Illinois area, what kind of vapor barrier should we do against the bare concrete walls?
Good morning. What kind of wall foundation is it? If you use closed cell spray foam, you do not need a vapor barrier as it’s integral to the system. If you are planning on fiberglass, you will need to either paint walls to seal them or use a foam backer insulated panel that is applied with adhesive. Have you asked your town what the insulation requirements are in your climate?
How did you attach the handrail to the railing?
What is the perc test or sanitation requirement for a home that is on city sewer? Ex. No septic tank etc.
From our experience no test needed BUT check with your board of health and building department as every town had their own set of bylaws.

Do you have to prove you are the homeowner with any documents or prove that the home owner have you permission to do the work on the property?
A homeowner may hire a contractor and still file the permit yes. BUT, the homeowner will assume more liability for the work provided. In Massachusetts, a homeowner also may do their own electrical work, but NOT plumbing. Does that answer your question?
@@RenoVista My question was , what documents does the homeowner need to prove they are the homeowner when pulling a permit for work done to a home?
@@Handlethisssunderstood. The typical permit will have a section on it called homeowner exemption.
Also, I would say just as long as your on a deed they would be able to match the property record
Does LVP…or SPC flooring allow the slab to breathe?
Hi CPT787 It’s best to use an lvp with a pre attached underlayment for this reason.
goood video!
Thanks Carlos
i saw your video on line. what is your opinion on carpet tiles for a concrete basemenr floor.
Would work just fine! Glue down?
That’s right!! Don’t do it yourself….call this guy. $1,000 in materials at Lowe’s for DIY, or $60,000 for his fee and get the same outcome. (Allegedly)
60,000 to frame walls? I think not where did you get that info?
lol what a joke ? 😂😂😂😂
How so?
Stop being a joke. You aren't their clientele. They offer a premium service, not someone pulling up in a 1980s F150 with rust on the body. They get booked with no issues
Thank you so much!
You’re welcome
Spent 50k on 750 sq ft but added a bedroom, full bathroom and full kitchen.
Nice work!
I’ve had some flooding issues in my half basement. I’m working outside on my grading and drainage, but it could happen again. I just had to pull up my Pergo. There is water underneath. I’m concerned that if I put down LVP I’ll have water and mold happening underneath. Thoughts?
So water can get under it yes. As long as you are able to let the area air dry you maybe have to remove some rows of the lvp but we’ve seen instances where the water has dried itself out
But if water gets under does the rubber/cork/foam underlayment attached get mouldy??
Great information Josh!
Thanks for watching!
Looking at this for inside tiny home, just for visual help how wide are your treads? Looks great!
Hello! The treads are 7.5 inches on the narrow end which is code here in mass. It gets a little wider on the longer side hope that helps!!
LOL You have no clue...........................
About?
Hey Bill. Care to elaborate?
Why is foam board always the suggestion when mold can still grow on them?
Mold can truly grown on anything it seems but it is an accepted form of finishing. What have you seen personally?
I would also say that if you can seal the walls prior to the foam it would be very beneficial
My dad works for Pella!! 35 years and counting
Love it very cool what does he do?

how about cork flooring?
Cork can be a good resource for a basement However they do require some Maintenance (sealing) certain kinds and are very susceptible to scratches dents, and if moisture hits them they will fail almost immediate. Say a leak from a furnace. Now, with that said they are beautiful and nice to walk on and also provide some insulation value. If you’re considering cork best bet would be to READ the manufactures instruction on how to apply it to a concrete slab. There may be some additional prep and you don’t want to void any warranties Hope that helps!
As a locksmith, gotta say not a fan of pella. No idea about their windows but their door lock mechanisms are a nightmare to work with. Had a customer today with a simple spring broken: the whole body is riveted together so she needs a $700 part to replace all of it instead of a $0.25 spring. Pretty dumb.
We are living in 6th floor, we want to make move kitchen to balcony, kitchen and balcony are in front of each other, and there is 8feet dinning space between them, its possible to make balcony as a kitchen.
Thanks for your message. Do you possibly have a photo of what’s going on? You could email us? josh@renovistaconstruction.com.
I have 30 years experience in the home valuation business. Typically a standard finished basement will not add more than 3% - 5% to the value of a home in most markets. Walkout basements with more natural light can return more value. For example if you have a $300,000 house you will likely get $10k - $15k return when selling the home. If you spent $50k you lost money. I finished the basement myself. 650 sq. foot main room with a small bar area, pool table, and dartboard. Smaller 150 sq. foot room with complete home gym. Total cost of about $8,000. Don't hire a contractor to finish your basement - bad financial decision.
Home valuation business? What’s that?
I've worked with them there the greatest thing I've ever seen
That’s awesome 👏 in what type of application?
I see you also wasted your money on that worm drive Milwaukee saw, thing bogs down on a wet pt 2x6
Been working fine for us. Did you have one?
1. 📐 Measure: Determine the total rise of the stairs. We picked 7-5/16 as we had a rise of 110 and this gave us 15 treads. (Remember you can pick your riser height) 2. ✏️ Draw: Mark the outline of the stringer on a piece of wood using stair gauges and a square. 3. 🔨 Tools: Gather a circular saw and a handsaw. 4. 🪚 Cut: Use the circular saw to start each cut, and finish with the handsaw or jigsaw 5. 🔄 Repeat: Cut additional stringers as needed. Make sure you use your original board to mark all the boards. (Create a sample board) 6. 🛠 Install: Secure the stringers in place on your stairwell. You can use a cleat at top and bottom to hold the stairs as well.
RE Septic. Are you saying that if I have a brand new, 4br house with 4br septic in MA and I decide to put in a bedroom in the basement and go the permitted DIY route, it is possible that BoH will REQUIRE the 5br capacity septic for the home or they will fail the septic due to undercapacity?
Yes and no. Your best bet is to call the town and ask their bylaws. Every town can vary slightly on what they consider an add on. In general yes but you could always make it a flex room. A town official would be happy to divulge that info to you
🤣🤣🤣 Yeah ok.
Jesus I almost had a stroke with that intro
We’re glad you’re ok. 👌
1️⃣ **Measurement and Marking**: Measure the length for your shelving and mark the cutting line with a pencil. Double-check the measurements for accuracy. 2️⃣ **Secure the Shelf**: Secure the shelf on a stable surface to prevent movement while cutting. Use clamps if available to hold the shelf firmly. 3️⃣ **Use Painter's Tape for a Clean Cut**: Apply painter's tape along the cutting line to make the line more visible and to reduce splintering during cutting. 4️⃣ **Cutting with the Skill Saw**: Set your skill saw blade to the right depth and cut along the marked line, using the level as a guide. Keep your hands steady and maintain a consistent speed. 5️⃣ **Finishing Touches**: Remove the painter's tape and sand the edges if necessary for a smooth finish. Remember to prioritize safety by wearing protective gear and working in a well-ventilated area.
My lvp buckled and soaked water and got musty!
Wow what happened?
@@renovistadesignbuild honestly I have no idea! There’s a few shrinkage cracks I can’t fit a fingernail inside of. I live on mound on a hill. No water is able to accumulate on our property, so it likely was not a flood. They didn’t even bother with a vapor barrier. That was probably it.
Hello, what are your thoughts about epoxy over concrete in the basement? Thanks
Hello it could work for sure! What are your goals for the space?
playground for kids. thanks for replying. do you think ceramic tile is a good option as well? @@renovistadesignbuild
What about just painting? If yes, any recommendations on painting over concrete? black mastic? Maybe Ardex feather finish first?
Hey Kevin that is not something I’m totally familiar with. I imagine you could but would have to be a sealer as well as concrete is porous and sweats Thanks!
Yah, the air gap method is still bad IMO, like you said, it will most likely still lead to mold. Foam board or closed cell spray foam only.
Thank for the feedback!!!
Do you also remodel basements?
would you recommend some kind of subflooring's for LVP in an old basement to mitigate moisture issues? (durofoam with osb), drycore , etc)?
hey there! so double check what the manufacturer recommends. You can typically find the cut sheet (spec sheet) on any product if you look deep enough on the product page. I would also add, that there are some great basic underlayments that work well with LVP that have water resistant properties. However, with certain brands such as lifeproof you do not have to use an underlayment.
And the cost comparison for each?
Great question Typically a batt insulation with an air gap is the cheapest method Followed by the r5-r6 foam and insulation Followed by spray foam closed cell Around here spray foam can vary between 4.5 to 9 dollars per square foot
Sounds like r5 r6 foam board is the easiest most cost effective method. Leaving a gap would suck if you don't want to take away from the size of your room.
Thnx Josh, this was an awesome video! very informative!!
Thank you!
Well made!
Thank you!

Hello yes. As long as you frame the deck accordingly to “head off” the opening.
