After the freeze. Garden update! & How We Prepared Plants for Freezing (Texas zone 8b 9a)
Coffee water? So you mean coffee.......
Well, in a way, but not hot, no ice, no sugar, no milk 😁 basically, coffee and water
If you want to see where this cuttings came from: ruclips.net/video/wFhDJ-Np5ew/видео.html
So far one of the best videos I've watched regarding propagation w/this plant since I can actually understand what you're saying lol. I have some cuttings and going to put them in water and excited to grow them. Are you in Texas? If so, where? I live in Central Texas. Anyway, thank you for sharing and happy growing! 😊🪴🪴
That's awesome, You are more than welcome! I'm so happy you like the video! And Yes, I'm in TX too
Nice video! Thank you showing so much detail. 😊
You are very welcome! Thanks for visiting!
Thank you..I was worried when the little leaves started turning yellow. I use coffee pods. Can I put the grounds from them in the plant with water? How often should I do this?
You are more than welcome! Yes you can add that coffee with more water. As for the frequency, I'd say every couple of weeks, but you have to check, because if your weather is very warm, you could use it like 7 to 10 days, but if it is mid winter, once a month will be enough. Also depends on your type of soil, if it drains fast etc. You could leave the coffee or tea sediments on top, so every time you water, they get to the roots. Just make sure nothing is soggy. Thanks for visiting!
Oh Martha! I’m so sorry! Was that actual deer footage you caught?
Yes I recorded that, but not when they ate everything... in the porch. Now I have a cage all around and it looks ugly, so I will have to find another solution. Always nice to see you my friend
@ your next video should be how to decorate your caged plants! Hahaha! I hope to have a garden video up this week, my year end review. Always enjoy your videos!
@@mytinytnhomegarden That is an awesome idea!! I will do it LOL thanks! - I'm looking forward to watch your video!
How often should I use the coffee and epsom salt?
I would say, depending on how strong your mix is (I make mine weak) use it every 2, 3 weeks. Don't let the plant sit in wet dirt though. Also depending on your weather. If it is very hot, 2 weeks, if very cold weather, maybe 1 a month. Thanks for visiting!
I’m sure that was a lot of work but so worth it! Looks great 🤍🤍
It was! And we are planning to re do some parts now that is is not so hot
Beautiful! 🦋
Thank you! I was very happy to catch a video on time lol
We have a lot of the same plants in our garden centers! I’m in zone 10b 🪴
I'm sure you would rarely need to cover plants in winter? Last year we had a very cold winter, and they still moved our zone to a warmer number lol Thanks for visiting!
@@TheLivingBackyard We don’t freeze here but when the temperatures drop into the 40’s a lot of plants burn but I rarely go out and cover them 🫣🤣
The last 2 winters we reached 14F weather for a few nights. Scary thing! All the palm trees from the area are gone. I covered my Sago and it survived. I wish I was in a zone 10 now lol
@@TheLivingBackyardOh no 💔 I really don’t like the heat we have most of the year but I try to tell myself I get to garden year round so that’s the payoff 🤣
@@Allthebackyardcritters How does it get? Las summer we sort of broke record, 116 index. I'm thinking, so cold and so hot, what am I doing gardening here LOL Right now I'm enjoying the fall weather but when the leaves fall, I'm not going to be so thrilled AHAHAHAH
You are the propagating queen! Occasionally, I stick cuttings in water to see if it roots, and that’s as far as I’ve ever gotten!. My daughter gave me a set of five little bud vases for my birthday last month. It’s that which I’m using for my Purple Heart cuttings to root in. Looks pretty on the kitchen counter too.
I love propagating, but I have lost so many if I live them outside, because the squirrels like gardening in my pots too 😖😁😂 So now I just want to keep stuff indoors! Those vases sound amazing!! and I hope you had a beautiful birthday! have you posted about it? Let me know if you make a video of it, I'd love to see it! I bet it looks awesome by a window? Or the table! ♥♥♥
I live in Seattle. I have outdoor gardenia on pots and the ground. How should I protect them from winter? Thanks!
I'm not really familiar with the weather over there, seems you are in zone 9a? Some Gardenias can start the cold of zone 7, but as a general rule, if you know it will freeze, like less than 32, cover the plants, potted or not, with a transparent plastic over night. A plastic painters tarp is ideal because you can cover several plants at the same time, but if they are in separate places, cover them individually. If the plastic is clear, you don't have to rush in the daytime to remove it. Like this from my affiliate link: 👉 amzn.to/3Ac1lyV Gardenias love sunlight, so, no black plastic! If it gets terribly cold, preferable bring the potted plants indoors. I myself will start doing that next door with some plants in planters. Some varieties of Gardenias can stand the cold weather better, so if you happen to know your particular variety, check how cold hardy it is, maybe you don't have to cover them so much. Thanks for visiting!
so gorgeous. So I made mine and the shape turned out beautiful. So I painted it. Looked so nice, but when I pick it up it broke. Have I missed a step in how to harden it? I had let it dry for several days.
Oh no! Was it too thin? I cannot imagine why it broke besides that reason. Sorry to hear that! The air dry clay is supposed to be a bit flexible and very durable!
@@TheLivingBackyard I was wondering if it was too thin too, but it looked as thin as yours. I will be trying again :)
What's coffee water?
It is literally coffee in water. Not hot at all. You can see how I made it at the beginning of the video. Let me know if you have more questions!
I brought cuttings from my Purple Heart to try as houseplants.
yeeesss! That's awesome, they will bring you color in the next months, and purple is always nice lol ♥
I got one of these a few months ago. This is perfect timing for me! Thank you, Martha! And then 😢. (I’m watching as I type). The plant called to you for nurturing. I love the first song that you chose by Debussy. ❤
I could not resist! I always feel I can help somethings, somehow. Even when I had decided not to get more indoor plants! lol I am preparing a video on how it is looking now, few weeks later. Always nice to see you! ♥
I haven’t looked at the garden centers in a while. It’s nice to see what’s available in your area.
Soon they will have only some random bushes lol but that'd the seasons I guess😁🌷
Feels good to play with the dirt, doesn’t it?! It feels like it’s been a long time for me. Your new plants are pretty!
Yes it does! I think I will spend more time with my indoor plants, since the &^%$^ deer ate my plants again! I hope you were FAR from the rain my friend! I know some areas had it really bad
@@TheLivingBackyard we were way on the outskirts. We got three days of “normal” rain. Much needed as we haven’t had rain in three months.
Lovely video!! ☺️ It’s always fun to admire the variety of plants in garden centers.
Thank you! 💚 Thanks for visiting 🌱 🌷 👍
wow... I love that. My elephant ears are ready and now I need some clay. Thanks for the inspiration.
You are so welcome! Thanks for visiting, I know you are going to have fun with this!
Why do the buds fall off and become dry, without flowering,
It can be several reasons, one is lack of nutrients in the soil, or extreme heat, or change of temperatures. Depending on where you live, check if you need to water more often, or use plant vitamins in the watering, or move it if possible (if it is in a pot) to an area where it is more protected from the weather and still get enough light. I hope this helps!
Can you do this with larger branches? My desert willow has shot out several branches from the crown that are still soft wood and id like to prune them off and propagate them
In my experience, the larger branch did great for a while, then gave up. I think they don't have enough strength to feed a larger branch and leaves etc.... the ones that did better were smaller, with just 2 or 3 leaves, in water. I don't know where you are located, but the propagation is better in spring, so, if you can wait till then it would help better, but if you need to do it right now and it is fall, then keep them in a sunny place indoors, because the weather, wind, bugs etc, are easier to manage like that. In my case, the squirrels dig on my experiments outside! Thanks for stopping by!
What soil mixture do you use. Do you tent cuttings in dirt with plastic.
It is soil from a store, but it is better to add Perlite to it. I didn't need to tent the cuttings because it was very warm so I kept them just by a window. If you are in a cold place you definitely benefit from tenting. Thanks for visiting!
What I was looking for 😊. Thanks for the tips.
You're welcome! Glad it was helpful and thanks for stopping by!
my rosemary plant also withered
I have noticed the strongest Rosemary is the one standing up and thicker leaves. The one thinner can't survive my winters! Thanks for visiting!

I Wish you sold them because i got the seeds but they’re not growing.Would you be willing to sell them?
Hi, I'm not prepared for selling larger plants, sorry! But I have smaller plants like Tradescantia Zebrina, that grows super fast and Just yesterday I was thinking I could ship them! 😁
The seeds take their time to grow, that's for sure... just keep them super protected in good light and very little water, I hope it works!
Excellent 🎉
Thanks for the visit! 💚
Thank you for sharing ❤
You are so welcome! Rosemary is a wonderful plant!
Such a great idea! So much cleaner and easier than cement! I'm wondering if I could knead in some sort of strengthening agent to make it waterproof. I made cement ones but waterproof paint peeled over time.
Hi, I'm not aware of anything to add to this clay, but it is sort of plasticized after it dries, so there's that. I know this clay can be painted, and they also have white. I have never painted anything for water or for outside, but I know FolkArt make exteriors paint (if you want in small amounts) and there's water resistant sprays, so you can have fun experimenting! I just would make the shapes thicker than what I did. Keep me posted!
We made it through the rough August heat 🙌 Hope you are feeling much better now and enjoying this cool off 💚
We are much better, thanks! My husband got it worse, poor guy. - Today the weather was so nice! I am so ready for fall, even if I don't want to rush into cleaning leaves season lol
August gardening can be so heartbreaking. We finally got a half hour of rain yesterday. I think I heard my plants rejoice!
we have rain today here too! We were at level 2 of water conservation, the poor ground/plants!
Awesome! So realistic! I've been wanting to make a water fountain with cascading leaves...I guess paint this with some kind of enamel paint to waterproof?
I'm sure the clay can be painted, and just make sure it says "water p[roof" or give it a coat of some water proof spray after you paint. Let me know how it goes!
I have 2 bubba desert willows that I planted for my beehives and I never see them working the flowers. I see bumble bees work them.
Oh, I will pay attention to that, I love bumble bees!
Did you water that dry potting soil after planting the seeds? I know if it’s too wet it’ll kill the young seedlings. They’ll turn black starting at the root and it’ll travel up the stem. I used damp seed starter mix and lost about half of them to that black rot. The Genista caterpillars are really bad here in north central Texas and I have to keep on eye on mine or they’ll defoliate a small TML in a short amount of time.
I did water it and drained it well... then we had huge rains and all my little pots got flooded till I realized and checked on them. Sadly I lost many of them. Down here I'm not sure what caterpillars we have besides bunch of butterflies and moths, but the cut ants are worse! They keep chewing up pretty much everything. The surviving baby trees are in a very sunny place, I water once a week, very little water. They look healthy and slowly growing.
@@TheLivingBackyard Genista caterpillars feed mostly on TML. It’s the only plant I’ve seen them feeding on here. They’re immune to the TML toxin and when they ingest it they become toxic to most predators that eat them. Not all but some predators. I had to spray mine 4 times this year for them. There’s a nursery near me where I bought my original tree and their TML are always infested with them. They’ll strip them to bare twigs. They make webs also.
Great video
Thank you! So glad you stopped by! 🙂🌸🌿
Thank you!! I do use Flox bloom....wich is way less Chemicals that miracle grow....wich I find Miricle grow makes the plants too dry over a length of time.
I'll check it out!
I had this exact experience all of my garden gone. I’m so angry.
It feels horrible! Not only the monetary loss but all the effort and work.... ugh The good things is, after I trimmed everything, many things are looking much better. Not all, sadly. Some plants just dried up 😵😖🙄🌻 Thanks for visiting and I do hope your garden recovers!
These seeds yellow in the sun; danger tea
You are right! No one should drink or eat these seeds! They are toxic, thanks for your comment! 🐞
My gardenia was doing really well had large plump buds and green shiny leaves. I saved the kcups decar coffee and sprinkled one on the dirt in the gardenia's pot. almost overnight the leaves started drooping and turning yellow. Now the plant is looking like it is almost dead. the plump buds dried up all the leaves are drooping. I don't know what happened. I watered after putting the coffee grounds on it. It looks like the coffee grounds were not good for it. What can I do. Please help. Thank you. ps. I have two smaller gardenias on the front of my house in pots. I did not put any coffee grounds on them. They are still looking good.
Check the soil! Some of my plants that dried out with no explanation, had grubs on it. Larvae from June Bugs or any other similar bug that lands in the planter or near the soil of a plant, and their eggs become hungry root-eating larvae. They can be beige or gray, are soft and like a "c" shape. Grab them and feed them to the birds. - It is a big job to take a large plant of the pot, but it is worth it. Another thing to check is the bottom of the planter in case that it's clogged. Let me know how it goes! I wish you the best of luck!
If I replanted it with miracle gro, do I still need to use the coffee?
I would wait a bit and see, just because gardenias love acidity, but you don't need to overwhelm the soil with too many things. Miraclegro makes them flower anyway, but just check, if you see yellowing, you can add some coffee later on. Thanks for visiting!
I love the trumpet flower on this tree!
I give this tree a 10. It's on my list to add to my garden. I propagated cuttings from my vitex tree. They are still in my kitchen windowsill in a vase of water. All four cuttings have roots and are leafing out. I need to get them in a pot. lol!
Yes! The flowers are so beautiful! 😊🌞😍
The Vitex can stand so much! That's awesome, you can make a wall with them and see just pretty flowers! The deer hardly touch the ones here, but the cutter ants damaged one so badly! It's back this year, poor thing! But yes, I love those 2 💚💚💚
Great video:)
Hey! Thanks for visiting, nice to see you!
This is almost 100% fail.
The smaller cuttings were going better, but it was a bad decision to leave the bucket in the back unsupervised, since the squirrels mess with everything. Thanks for stopping by!
@@TheLivingBackyard I started a small garden this year planting cucumbers and Luffas in April/May. They have vines but no fruit. The flowers are very small and die off. :/ I think it’s the soil I used.
@@MrTexaz101 yeah... big part of success is the quality of the soil. I have pretty much all sand around here, so I amend, and the indoor plants, I am experimenting with Leca. I'm thinking next year start some compost piles, and see how it goes lol
@@MrTexaz101 I was thinking, maybe you don't have the "right" pollinator for those plants? - I say that, because long ago I couldn't grow Gourds, and turned out the little bug that pollinates the flower did not live near my garden. That could be another possibility
Any roots?
it was going well till a squirrel messed them up. They did get roots, but a big bucket in the middle of the back, was not a great idea
I just noticed I hadn’t watched this! Hope you’re doing well, Martha!
Getting there! So nice to see you! ♥
“I just couldn’t throw them away.” Ma’am, you are truly One Of Us 😂 I very much love this 🥰
😁😂😅
Hi. We have many of these trees in our yard. This house is 60 years old. Most of the trees we believe are old. We love them so much. Many of the trees are dying or at least have black bark and some very frail so we will start collecting seeds. Do you plan on planting in the ground? Have you grown any from cuttings? I will try both ways.
I have not done propagation from cuttings, mostly because I don't own a mature tree, but I'm grouting these from seeds. Not all the seeds made it, but the ones that are still growing, I will wait till next season to plant them in soil. They are beautiful trees! If possible call an arborist, so you can know for sure what's wrong with the tree. Some are very expensive, some not so much. The very least check for aphids (if you find them, buy ladybugs from a nursery and open the box at night by the tree, so they stay.) Also get an anti-fungal spray, and test it on the black spots. I am not an expert but I have tried those 2 things and it helps. Do not over water, Mountain Laurel likes dry conditions, so maybe also check that the soil is not keeping water stuck at their base. Also on the other hand, if there are not sprinklers or rain, give them some water every couple of weeks. You'll have to calculate by feeling the soil. They can be dry for a while, but not a full summer. Thanks for visiting and keep me posted! ♥
Your cycas at the start looks healthy and thriving!
Yes, There were 4 when we moved here, 3 in very bad shape, one didn't make it. I keep the vitamins healthy! and one palm anti-fungal too. Thanks for visiting!
@@TheLivingBackyard Great to be living in a place where they grow like that! Too cold and wet here in Wales. :)
@@PlasBachGarden It can get SO hot here! A few weeks back we had 46C, yes, 46. just plain nuts! About the sago, you could have it in a clay pot, maybe a base that can be rolled back in in the winter? Last winter it got to be -12C, which rarely happens. I covered everything! The palms survived! 😅😂🤠
@@TheLivingBackyard Oh wow, that's good to know it survived such a cold spell. I'm encouraged to give them a try!
