Large Right Whale Surface Active Group
Researchers from the New England Aquarium document a large surface active group (SAG) on Roseway Basin in 2006.
To protect this species, it is ILLEGAL to approach a North Atlantic Right Whale within 500 yards in U.S. waters and 400 meters in Canadian waters without a scientific permit. The New England Aquarium Right Whale Research Team operates under scientific permits in US and Canadian waters: this footage was collected legally. Please report all right whale sightings from Virginia to Maine to 866-755-6622, and from Florida to North Carolina to 877-WHALE-HELP. Right whale sightings in any location may also be reported to the U.S. Coast Guard via channel 16 or through the WhaleAlert app ...

Right Whale Headpush with Gunshot Call

Using a hydrophone in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Dalhousie University scientists recorded a right whale call known as the "gunshot." While scientists aren't sure how the gunshot call is produced, it is sometimes (but not always!) heard after a right whale does a "headpush," as shown here in this video. Collecting a biopsy sample from a right whale
Просмотров 2984 года назад
This is how researchers collect a biopsy (skin and blubber) sample from large whales! This is a previously un-sampled North Atlantic right whale in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and the sample from this whale will join hundreds of other samples from individual whales, housed in a genetic database. The genetics allow us to link family trees, as well as provide a positive ID to carcasses. The special...
