How To Turn on Your Tesla Powerwall 3 (Backup Switch)
I have my power wall configured to go off grid during the time of expensive power, 4pm-9Pm in this area. If, during this time, I want to manually go back on grid how do I do it? Thanks dds
Thanks Zach another great video, nice pacing and the spreadsheet is great. Would like to hear more about the cell type, by pass diodes, and wind load if you feel those are important factors. Also glad you installed US made panels on your house .
Thank you for the positive feedback! Great point about those other features. A video on bypass diodes and cell types are on the horizon. Thanks for watching 😃
I was surprised Trina Vertex wasn't on the list. At 23% efficiency and overall good reliability and specs, it seemed like a good candidate for inclusion.
Trina just isn’t a brand I run into a whole lot. Of course, that doesn’t make it an subpar panel. I will go ahead and add it to the spreadsheet for comparison. Thanks for the insight!
@ZachSolar its offered as an option between REC around me. The 23% efficiency is relatively new and has trade-offs over REC, but is a good panel to add in the mix. Our installer warrantied it for 30 years in comparison to REC at 25 years. The extra warranty time can be beneficial.
@@trstrean Which Vertex model is that one specifically? They have quite a few.
@@ZachSolar Vertex S+ 460W TSM - NEG9R.28. They do have quite a few options.
Hi Zach, would love your thoughts on the Hyundai HiS-S405YH(BK). This is a panel. I installer recommended here in Southern Cal and there isn’t a lot of information out there on RUclips about it. I never see it show up in any reviews. Thanks for all your great content.
Thank you for watching! Hyundai makes a very solid panel at a great price point. They have been really popular over the years and I think they have just flown under the radar. Very similar specs to the Qcells Q.PEAK DUO we discussed at #7. I will add it to the spreadsheet!
I was thinking they were similar in spec to the QCell Duo. Thank you for the response.
Everyone and their mothers are trying to get rid of their panels that are made in Southeast Asia due to the tariffs the Customs and Border Patrol will be enforcing come around December 3, 2024. Tariffs up to 250% !!! To top it off, the Federal Tax Credit of 30% may get repealed. So remember kids, be careful which panels you buy and when you buy to install them. In the last couple days, I've seen 540w bifacial commercial panels go as little as 6 cents per watt. The residential panels are going for about 15-20 cents per watt. All prices are wholesale for panels only.
Where is the best place to purchase panels for a quantity of about 20kw?
Any recommendations on solar installers in southern California? Orange county area
I live in the Los Angeles area and I contacted NRG Clean Power to install a PW3 (currently in the permitting phase). They also service the OC area. I went with them because my consultant was fast in answering my technical questions and just wasn't a sales guy. There's also OC Solar in Irvine and they have a showroom.
@@JEEZUSSS1 feel free to email me at infozachsolar@gmail.com if you need assistance here. I have some contacts out there I can send your way. BMWguy already made some good suggestions too!
My local installer just confirmed my order and pricing to have two PW3s installed to my existing Enphase PV system,. After incentives, I'm getting two PW3s installed for less than $16K, $33,500 before, and V2H charging will be icing on the cake. The only issue for me has been availability. I placed my order back in Sept and anticipating a Jan install.
Great to hear that got all sorted out! Hope the install goes smooth. Enjoy your new PW3 setup 🔋
QCells truly is the best bang for your buck. If I didn't care about cost I would choose REC/Panasonic.
Hard to beat REC and Qcells!

Maybe you can help with a settings problem I have since installing a PowerWall 3 a couple of weeks ago? I do not have export permission yet, but I do have a very good off-peak tariff every night. I also have a modest PV installation. I have set up 'Time-Based Control' so the battery charges up to 100% during the off-peak period, which is great if there is not much sunshine so the battery discharges through the day. Trouble is if the sun comes up strong, the battery starts charging again and quickly reaches 100%. Then any surplus PV generation after house consumption just goes to waste! This will obviously get better when I get export permission, but there could still be cases where the export tariff is less than the off-peak rate and potential savings would go to waste. Seems to me that, rather than a hard choice between 'Self-Powered' and 'Time-Based Control', there should be an upper threshold setting dividing the space above the 'Backup' region into a 'Grid Storage' region and a 'PV Buffer' region.
I don’t think this level of customization will be able to be had within the native Tesla app. I’m sure we could figure out a proper automation schedule within Netzero, but hard to say with absolute certainty. @@ZachSolar Thanks for pointing me to this app. Now I know it exists I guess I'll be able to work it out. Rather surprised I ran into the limitations of the Tesla app so quickly though as this seems like a rather obvious scenario!
Need a updated video tesla has updated everything
Which parts are outdated? Everything covered in this video still look the exact same in my app. Unless there's a big update that just went out?
How do i add my batteries to my app? When i trued ut said it was alfeady registered
@@Jonnyblazehere it’s paired to the email that your installer registered the Powerwall to. Make sure you create a Tesla account with that exact email. If still no luck, check with your installer since they are the one who registered your system with Tesla.

10 kW - 25x 400W
Is your wall connector wired into your gateway or your main breaker ?
@@KysonandAlyssa Mine is wired to my main panel.
@ mine is as well… I have no option to charge off solar through my vehicle settings or my solar/power wall settings… The options you show on your video don’t even exist in my app
@@KysonandAlyssa Bummer! I wish I had a good answer for you as the why that's the case. If you have a Tesla vehicle that's compatible and paired with your PW, it should show up on your app.
I wish there was a more obvious definition of how the system will function during super off peak, off peak, shoulder, and peak. I want my system to charge up during my free nights and avoid using the grid all together from 9am-9pm.
You could set up automations in the Netzero app to achieve that. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/r6vep4GQEA0/видео.html If you'd like to have me help you set these automations up and test them, book a call here: calendly.com/infozachsolar/support
I have IQ8+s. Two questions if I add Powerwall 3 with a Tesla Gateway: 1. If the batteries are full, will the solar still generate power (and be fed back to the grid)? 2. If the grid goes down, will the solar continue to produce? What about if the batteries are run down to zero (for example in a prolonged outage)?
@@JalepEdits 1) Yes 2) Yes. During a grid-outage, the Powerwall will disable all home loads once the battery reaches ~5% state of charge and it’ll save that power for the solar inverter so it can recharge the battery once solar access is available again. If by some chance you did run the batteries to an actual 0%, the solar wouldn’t be able to jumpstart it.
@@ZachSolar Thank you. Just so I’m clear, when you say “once solar access is available” you mean when the sun comes back out after a storm/night, right? In other words, in this scenario the grid has been down for days, it’s been cloudy, battery drains down to 5%, gateway shuts off house loads, eventually sun comes back, batteries start to charge again, even with the grid still down. Do I have that right? Also, if that happens, do I have to wait for solar to fill the battery before solar energy is directed to my house loads? Really appreciate you answering my questions, not sure where to find information on this topic elsewhere.
@@JalepEdits No problem! And yes, once the sun comes out again. You have it all correct. You will not have to wait for your battery to be fully charged. You may have to wait for it to get a reasonable state of charge (like 10% but that's just an assumption). The solar energy will prioritize your home loads, and send excess generation to the battery. Ex) 5 kW being generated by solar, home is drawing 2 kW, battery is being charged with the difference of 3 kW.
@@ZachSolar Awesome, thank you so much! Given my limited wall space, it seems like the PW3 with Gateway is the way to go (I'm in VA, so no backup switch) over the Enphase 5P with IQ Controller. As much as I'd like to stay in the Enphase ecosystem, I just don't have the space for the number of 5Ps it would take to give me the same capacity as two PW3s.
I’m gathering quotes for solar + battery for my house (you’re not local to me, sorry!). A couple of them are suggesting panels with Enphase micro inverters along with a Tesla Powerwall. Aren’t the Enphase micro inverters redundant since the Powerwall has a built in inverter? Can’t they just go straight from the panels to the battery without the need for micro inverters? Seems like a big unnecessary cost unless I’m missing something.
The microinverters are redundant in this case. I’d ask them why they recommend that over using the Powerwall’s inverter. Curious their response. Without knowing more about your situation and their quotes, it’s hard to say the logic here.
Thanks Zac for some great information for Enphase system owners looking to replace Powerwall 2s at some stage n the future.
Thank you!
I don’t have the “vehicle charging when off grid” setting. I have charging on solar, but not the other one. I do have Netzero setting my reserve to current state of charge when the vehicle is charging, so I think I’m covered??
Yeah, honestly that "vehicle charging when off-grid" is only useful if the grid goes offline. That's strange you don't have it. The Netzero automation will work great for you while on-grid, to have your EV charge from the utility rather your PW.
Wow this was most useful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 😎
Much better and less expensive solutions out there. Such as EG4 Wallmounts. Triple the capacity at the same price. Absolutely ridiculous pricing where you're just buying the name. I have 18K inverter and 2 indoor wallmounts. Couldn't be happier.
Cool setup!
@@ZachSolar Thanks and appreciate the video. Wasn't denigrating you...
@@btscott1 oh, no offense taken at all. It’s clear that EG4 makes a very solid product, I just think they serve a different market of consumers as of now.
Two quesitons... 1: I have an agricultural building that faces south and has a subpanel fed from the house via a 200A 250mcm 4 wire underground connection. If I put solar on the ag building would powerwalls also be installed in that building? How about the gateway - same building or back in the residence? Are additional wires required or does the solar and powerwall connect directly to the sub-panel in the ag building and back feed via the existing feed? Second question: the residence has a 400A service with multiple 200a sub-panels feeding a different garage and two sub-panels in the house. Thus a backup solution would need to have multiple 200A gateways which is impractical. What is the potential for a future 400A gateway or 400A backup switch? The most practical solution for me would be solar on the ag building, powerwalls in the ag building and 400A gateway at the service entrance in the residence. Hopefully this could become possible. Thanks , great video! - Thomas
Thanks Thomas! I'm glad the video was helpful 👍 1) Both the Powerwall(s) and Gateway may be able to be installed on that building and backup that subpanel. My concern would be any utility pushback or AHJ restrictions with it being further away from the main. I'd find a local installer out there and see what their thoughts are. 2) I haven't heard anything about a 400A gateway or backup switch coming from Tesla, but I might be out of the loop. Installing 2 Gateways is the most common work around in this scenario.
This is Cathy's husband Larry - we are both amateur radio operators - we just installed a Tesla PowerWall 3 and solar panels to our condo. I am seeing significant radio frequency emissions at set frequency intervals of 250kHz across the high frequency spectrum into VHF spectrum - for example, I have an antenna for the 20 meter amateur band and there are signals at 14.00MHz, 14.250MHz, 14.500MHz, and so on. These disappear when the sun goes down and the panels are not producing power. Also, last evening, just 4 days after the install, our HOA complex power went out. Our power also went out even with the PowerWall set up I thought for backup power. When I tried to disconnect from the grid, the app stated that we had too many appliances connected (we did not) which exceeded the capacity of the PowerWall. Today, with power restored, I was able to disconnect from the grid without the over-capacity message warning. Any ideas?
For both of these scenarios, I'd reach out to your installer so they can troubleshoot this with you. I'd just be speculating on my end. Sorry, wish I had a better answer for you!
I wish Tesla would push this feature to their entire fleet. I don’t think they will until the competition is on their heels. In other words, not anytime soon 😞
Hopefully it's something they integrate soon. Additionally - I think it'd only boost their Powerwall sales.
For my EV charger I decided to go with a Tesla Universal Wall Connector just in case in the future when it works with Powerwall 3s for bidirectional charging.
Great decision. I think the Universal is well worth the small price bump.
Hello Zach, Thank you for sharing this valuable information. We eagerly await bi- directional/ power share capabilities from all Telsa vehicles and EV manufacturers.
Thanks for watching! Hopefully it comes sooner rather than later 🤞
Wish it is only software to enable other teslas. Our X Plaid has a 100kWh pack and would help if we had a multi-day outage. We already have a Powerwall 3 but it’s only 13.5kWh. We also have the dual Anker Solix F3800 set up with a smart panel and expansion batteries adding an extra 30.8kWh.
Woah! If they give you Powershare, you might never need the utility company again with that amount of storage capacity. How do you like your Solix system?
@@ZachSolarso far love the solix set-up just wished the expansion batteries were cheaper. Best I could find online was ~$1600 each but adding the expansion is super easy - just plug them in. I originally called our solar installer to get a quote to add another powerwall 3 added (for extra battery capacity and not additional load capacity) but they weren’t able to since only the fully batteries w/inverters, etc were available. The Anker solix works well since we already have powerwall 3 else I would have had to move circuits to the critical loads panel. When we move, I can easily remove the smart home panel and breaker and take the whole system with me vs the powerwall 3.
Do you need batteries to be able to see how much energy your house used? My app isnt showit all the breakdowns your saying.
Nope - you should see it even with just a Tesla inverter. You just need some hardware installed. Reach out to your installer and say "I need consumption CTs installed so I can see my home's energy consumption". They should include it for free.
Am trying to get 10 panels + PW3 installed in my townhouse with SDGE grid distrib. I've been told that because my meter is 4 units away in a utility closet, I need a Tesla Gateway 3 for $5,000 installed. No one else from 4 quotes has mentioned this. I was also told my breaker panel needs to upgraded but only to 125 amp instead of 200 amp. My current master breaker is 70 amp (in utility cabinet), so I would have to put a 70 amp master in either new panel. Why would I be limited to 125 amp panel? Thanks
That is super bizarre, especially if none of your other quotes had mentioned this to you. It's hard to say what's going on for certain, but off-hand I'd find it hard to believe that a Gateway 1 would be able to do something a Gateway 3 couldn't. You might be limited to a 125A panel due to wire size. The wire size may not be capable of supporting a 200A panel.
@@ZachSolar I corrected the Gateway they want to install is actually 3. Another vendor is specifying a SolarEdge inverter but no Gateway. Not sure why they want to install a SolarEdge inverter when the PW3 already has one. Could it do the function of a Tesla Gateway 3 at less cost? As far as the breaker panel goes, both 125 and 200 boxes would require a ~70Amp master breaker to protect the wiring to the meter which also has a 70A master breaker. Thanks.
@@rooobosmith I'd stick with all in one Tesla system. Strange that someone is recommending a SolarEdge inverter. I'd ask what that is all about.
@@ZachSolar I asked the sales rep and he didn't know. Stellar Solar says I need the T Gateway 3. I believe Freedom Forever was just giving a junk contract with terms that allowed them to add the Gateway 3 and up the price, but I'm really not sure. Seems the SolarEdge inverter is only suitable for monitoring in this system.
@@ZachSolar I finally got an answer about SE inverter. They said it was a "glitch," and that a GW3 is defacto included with a PW3 (if needed) even though not listed on the contract. I asked for mods to the contract, and they just keep saying to sign the existing one cause they can't change it (until after the site survey). Does that make sense to not include the GW3 on the contract?
You didn't cover "Off-Grid" which to me, is the most desired feature where you are completely energy independent. This is my favorite feature of the app and my system and as long as I have enough sun, my default setting.
That's really cool. I didn't know users would keep it in Off-Grid mode like that, but it makes sense. I should have absolutely included that in this video.
Great content and presentation. Your channel will blow up keep up the great work
Thank you! Really appreciate that positive feedback ☀️
I am lucky enough to own a Genesis GV60 which has bi-directional charging ability. Prior to installing our Franklin battery, we had an outage so I plugged in a powerboard to the car, and ran the fridge and some other appliances and it worked without and issues. The franklin battery allows for charging from a generator so i don't see why it could not be plugged into the car (I don't have this feature installed). Separately, there are chargers which allow for bi-directional power flow already, so there is no reason houses cannot make use of this - I watched a video of an Australian wine refinery which has already done this. So the tech exists, and people have actually set it up already. The main issue is red tap for now, but it seems people are already breaking ground with this tech. the problem with Bi-directional charging is actually charging your car in the first place to use at night. My battery is 13.6kw, which is deep cycled each night - that's 95.2kw of power per week. I only get to really charge my car on the weekend, so i need the power stored in the car to actually run the car during the week. Couple with this, the battery is set and forget. It just works without me having to do anything. So bi-directional charging is not really needed, and i would not spend $5,000 setting it all up to save a few cents per day when my battery already does the heavy lifting. That said, I certainly see this as being pretty mainstream into the future - every charger will eventually be able to do it, and new houses will simply have this as a feature available within the home power box; but i don't think it will be until electric cars have a much larger share of the market, bidirectional chargers are much cheaper, and people are looking to use the car battery to save on getting a house battery (albeit a little more inconvenient).
I wasn’t aware the Genesis could do this! Very cool. Thanks for sharing your experience. And I agree - lots of red tape. The utility regulation alone is a whole nother conversation.
Do you all think Tesla will actually release Powershare in 2025 for their other vehicles?
I hope they do, it would be ridiculous if they keep it for CT only. It will be a major factor in my next purchase decision.
@@aec258 I agree and I've heard that from a lot of people. I guess we will see what they do.
Left the comforts and security of living in a very modern city to live a more quiet rural life. Part of that no city water, so private well, ergo electric water pump, ergo got my Tesla Powerwall3 just for grid outages. So that with solar put my estimated paybeack on investment at 18yrs... but so worth it.
Great investment! The savings and return on investment is just a cherry on top at the end of the day.
I suggest buying Solar and Batteries now because next year Trump will impose a 100% import tariff.
Even if that happened, manufacturers would pivot fast. Most of them have already due to the domestic content tax credit.
Can the powerwall 3 allow the enphase iq8 to form a microgrid when grid is down like the enphase batteries do? I have an existing microinverter system but I am adding 10 more panels and want batteries. My plan was/is 5p batteries but I really do not have the wall space on that side of the house for 3 of them.
Yeah 100%. You will have full system functionality during an outage. Keep in mind - a single Powerwall 3 can only support 7.6 kW of AC solar power. If you’re above that, you will need 2 Powerwalls. If you have the IQ8+, 7.6 kW is 26 micros.
The changes in net metering rules were always inevitable to balance the interests of all parties. It takes investment and expenses to manage the flow of electricity in both directions.
I agree. I think there should be a fair balance between both sides.
Really good info, thanks so much for the clear understanding.
Thank you! I'm glad to hear it was helpful
Here in UK I have 2 rate purchase price 25pence per kWh 0530-2330 and just 7pence from 2330-0530. Any excess I export I can get 15pence per kWh. In the summer months I rarely have any bill to pay.
That’s a very solid export rate 👍
Yes, California does not have enough batteries to store all the solar energy generated.
Fortunately, their battery attachment rate has sky-rocketed of late. More and more storage is getting installed every day.
Whole house batteries are too expensive - $20k is almost as much as my solar system costs by itself! We're still 1:1 Net Metering here in the Seattle area.
Battery costs have continued to come down, but with 1:1 NEM it’s going to be really hard to justify for sure. I didn’t know Seattle had full 1:1. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for discussing an issue that will continue until homeowners get a Solar Bill of Rights that allow us homeowners to generate are own electricity without penalties
Thanks for watching!
Excellent points! Newcomers to solar should definitely check out your videos.
Thank you! I appreciate that 👍
We keep our solar and grid landline power seperate, solar powers our office building (consisting of mine and my wifes "offices") 24/7 and can run both fridge and freezers in case of grid down on a line hooked into the house. Nothing solar is connected to grid. We use solar powered lighting with motion detection outside, and am concidering using the same units for inside as well, to further cut on grid electricity use (also hands free lighting) 😚
Very cool setup! Thanks for sharing
Funny but we've had net metering from the very beginning and it is still the same, whatever you produce during the day you will not be billed for, anything in excess that you produce will be exported and you get paid for by the utility company at one third the rate if you end up using more energy than you produce , it's the difference that you'd be charged for at normal power rates. So it's a win win for everyone, the batteries take 3 hours to charge , the rest is exported so it's not that bad an option the ROI is anything between 5 and 10 years at that rate. Selling electricity to the utility company was never the idea of a residential setup, it was just to be energy independent so whatever else comes your way should be an added bonus. And as humans the duck curve doesn't mean anything because that curve is just residential, the human population goes to work everyday and that is where they use a lot more electricity than they produce, so the duck curve is valid only when it comes to residential areas but as a whole the utility company always has a deficit of power.
Great job with the subject 👏
Thank you!
Top tier information here. Thanks for putting this together, Zach.
I appreciate that, thank you!!
Good tips
I appreciate it!
Solid advice! As someone who lives in a state that still has one to one net metering, I might want to expedite my solar install.
You should at least check it out! Get a couple quotes and see if it makes sense for you. Thanks for watching!
