Inside the workshops teaching friends, neighbors & political foes to compromise
The U.S. is facing a deep crisis of polarization that is threatening our democracy. From the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol to the recent assassination attempt against Donald Trump, we are seeing that the increasingly bitter, ugly language thrown around in American politics has real life consequences. Words matter.
“Seldom has there been so much rancor in the way we talk to each other and the way we seem to have contempt for people in the other political party,” says David Blankenhorn, President of Braver Angels. “Our great experiment in ordered liberty as a nation will not survive if each half of the country really hates the other half and doesn't even want to talk to each other....

Preserving Democracy: Laws protecting the monarchy continue to undermine Thailand’s democratic hopes
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Месяц назад
In a period of democratic decline in Southeast Asia, Thailand is sometimes held up as an outlier; compared to a raging civil war following a military coup in next door Myanmar, the arrest and banning of opposition politicians in autocratic Cambodia, and the remaining communist governments of Laos and Vietnam, that Thailand had largely free and fair elections last year was hailed as a success st...

In contemporary American politics, the concept that we’re all Americans first, and political party second, has waned in recent decades. It wasn’t always like this. In the 1950s, trust in government was high, with about 75% of Am...
Teach Civics: ‘Schools should be incubators for democracy’

Often called “the father of American education,” Horace Mann argued that free, standardized schooling was key to self-governance, calling education the “great equalizer of the conditions of men.” A curriculum emphasizing the understanding of civics was core to that argument. Up until the 1960’s, American high schools required up to three courses in government and civics but in the last half cen...

I thought the idea that when we take pleasure in doing what is right, even though it may be difficult or uncomfortable, we can begin to lay the foundations of virtue as a habit. I think in any discussion it takes both sides to engage, but if I can maintain a position that seeks out the good of humanity, I will be better equipped to discuss these current tough topics. I have a long way to go and to learn, but I want to start being part of unifying and not dividing.

I was particularly struck by the idea that our form of government, democratic republic, is the form of government that requires the most of its citizens, actively participating with virtue, and that it was more than voting. Please PBS... Ask the people you interview how to pronounce their name. Pita Limjaroenrat is not pronounced the way you said it. Just ask, please. Do not read how it's translitterated to latin alphabet, you'll say it wrong everytime. Other than that, great reporting, and I hope you will cover their dissolution and the incoming protest/revolution. People have had enough in Thailand. Old tribalistic views from the military and monarchy protecting the status quo, preventing growth.

Hi Tommy, thanks so much for watching and for your interest in the topic. Name pronunciation discussions were a big part of our post-production effort; a translator and a party staffer were consulted, and ultimately an appropriate version of accuracy, for a non-Thai native speaker, was crafted (While there is no hard R in Thai, the elongated L sound is also not easy to replicate without risk of sounding inauthentic). In fact if you listen closely, you’ll hear at :22 in a clear re-record (the third!) of the line with Parit Wacharasindhu’s name. There is no easy answer, but we do try!

Fascists like the Heritage Foundation and their Project 2025 need to create confusion and doubt about secured voting in the hope of disuading voters from exercising their freedom to make their choices count. Mail-in ballots are coded and are unique. One John Allen Smith is not going to be sent a ballot for another John Allen Smith! The code enables the voter to track the ballot's journey from post office to the minute and time it is counted! This student election judge program is needed in all cities throughout this nation! The walking tours that explain the vote -counting process is a must in all cities as well! Too many thousands of ballots have been thrown away at the whim of a decision to toss it away because the letter " t" wasn't crossed properly! I have signed scribbles at the point of sale cashier counter with the use of my credit card. How secure is that?! Whether the ballot is mailed or, hand delivered to the ballot drop-off box , the use of the individual barcoding IS the best way to secure the safety of our votes!

As much as it seems like a voice of reason to many of you, I see a lot of false narrative and pushes the same story that never existed. I am glad this man understands a a lot of what has happened but it is still far from the reality. Unless and until Arabs and their leaders ( with a few exceptions that seem to see the reality) will admit the responsibility they bear in this conflict and it is a huge one, Israel was always on defense. Until they start teaching the real history at the schools and at homes, I don't think there will be any resolution and Israel again will need to fight and win.

The elephant in the room was never once mentioned. The question of self-determination for Palestinians, the illegal occupation and theft of land, the 75 years of expulsions and oppression was not mentioned. Why Hamas even exists was not considered - like they are just a Jew hating group of Arabs who developed in a vacuum or something. The "story" is in fact usually oversimplified and painted as pure good vs pure evil but this was an attempt to ignore the underlying, festering wounds that led to Oct. 7.

2:57 People gave news, in general, the benefit of the doubt... you know what we got? Russia Russia Russia. You know that woke a lot of people up to the idea that news... a lot of it is just outright propaganda. Left, right, doesn't matter. They'll lie to you face for a story and do it repeatedly and loudly for years to try to gaslight you into believing lies as the truth. You want people to trust the news? Good luck. The mainstream whittled away what little good will reporters had left. Cuz the overwhelming majority of it is spin, twofaced cutting board bullshit. Where your good will is returned with misquotes, willful obfuscation, and character assassination. I wouldn't trust a "reporter" or the "news" to do the right thing unless I was explicitly watching their every move.

If most people saw someone dumping plastic beads into a river in broad daylight, they would be shocked at this assault on our mutual drinking/eating system. They're doing it in secret and she's trying to figure it out. The consumption of some plastic products is not the issue here--it the economic system that doesn't value recycled plastic and makes it more economical to make new plastic and discard the old (this is at least in part due to government oil subsidies, because fossil fuel products are used to make plastic).

    • @aintgonnatakeit
