Thank you for the advice and for commenting. I don't use these gaskets anymore. Haven't for over a year now. Found them to be more of a pain than what they're worth, lol. I honestly don't like the butane inserts all that much, either. I use just a standard Zippo insert in my away from home Zippo and a regular pipe insert for my at home Zippo.

@zippolyonsden1623 I actually like a butane lighter insert, but I'm not a fan of Zippo's official butane insert. Why, because Zippo's official butane lighter insert doesn't have a window on it, which would allow you to see how much butane you have inside. The Vector Thunderbird butane lighter insert has a body made of clear polymer, so you can easily see how much fuel you have left inside. The one drawback to the Vector Thunderbird butane insert is that you have to slightly bend the metal tab inside the lid of your Zippo case to get it to fit the cam properly.

@ThomasConnolly I've been wondering how the Thunderbird inserts are. Fully agree about the Zippo butane ones and not being able to see how much fluid are in them. I also do not care for the small buttons on the official Zippo ones. I have clumsy thumbs that keep sliding off the little buttons, lol. I burnt myself a couple of times with the butane pipe insert 🤣.

There’s two spots. One says … … was 1960, but … 2517191 … was 1950-1957 Meh.

Zippo didn't start using dots on the bottom of their cases until late 1955. Late 1955, 1957, and 1958, all three have four dots on each side. Differences being 1955 also has pat pend on the right, 1957 only has the pat number on the left without a pat pend, and 1958 only has the pat number in the middle directly under the word Zippo. There's a really good website, glenzippo.co.uk that describes with pictures, all the differences in dating vintage Zippos. The chart on Zippo's site isn't really good for dating vintage Zippos, sadly.

@@zippolyonsden1623 Thanks! I used his site and dated it between 1956 and 1957, or possibly a 1960 with an old stock 1957-1958 insert. It has the humped spring and coated copper through-hole rivet.

@Zestypanda glad you're able to figure it out more. Yeah, Zippo had some stamps that, at a quick glance, look really similar yet have minor differences that point to the correct year of manufacture. The older the Zippo, the more one has to look at the details to determine the correct year. I own a 1942 that may actually be a 1941, but due to its age and the amount of wear it has, makes it hard to determine with certainty, so I just consider it a 1942.

Glad to hear you were able to quit smoking! Congratulations! How has your zip guard Zippo been holding up with every day use? I use a plain brass armor as my every day carry.

@@zippolyonsden1623 it’s taken a beating but the guards are still in place and holding up just fine. When I was stationed in Germany I had a really cool Armor but TSA confiscated it when I was flying back home 😂!! It had a plate on the front with a face, one half of the face was a devil and the other half was an angel. Absolutely loved that thing haha!

Man, that sucks about the Zippo you had in Germany. Have you ever tried to see if you could find another one like it?

@@zippolyonsden1623 I’ve been hunting for it but keep getting sidetracked with nicer models haha!! If I do stumble on it on eBay I will definitely buy it. The TSA agents wanted me to fill out some paperwork so I can get it back when I returned to the country but I just wanted to go home. Whoever has that lighter now got a really good one 😂

I never thought about why the ball markers were dime sized. I would use dimes instead in fear of losing the originals, lol. I also didn't think about the tool being used for divots 😂. I play disc golf. Thank you for commenting.

I printed the chart of of Zippo's web page. It definitely comes in handy when I make videos. This is actually my first Cummins Zippo. I had to look up the company to learn more about what they do.

The fuel evaporates after a while. It doesn't really leak out of the case. Petrol lighters, like Zippos work off the fumes of the fluid. The idea with these rubber gaskets was to help with fuel evaporation. I went back to just using the felt pad that comes with the Zippo originally since I really didn't see much difference in evaporation. The only time fluid would actually leak from a Zippo is if it is overfilled with fluid. Some people use a small piece of a plastic sandwich bag to cover the bottom of the insert to help with evaporation.

@@zippolyonsden1623 Ok, thanks for getting back to me. 😊 It seems we can stuff the housing with all manner of absorbent material, as long as the wick gets a good padding aound it. (I have a Glow in the dark Ghost Compass Zippo.) 😃

I use regular cotton balls in my daily carry Zippo. Just make sure not to over pack the insert and have the wick run through the wadding in an "S" shape. They're not packed correctly in the factory. The wadding that comes with Zippos from the factory are rayon balls which is basically a synthetic cotton. The glow in the dark Zippos are really cool! I only own one glow in the dark one. The one where there is an alien ufo trying to beam up a cow, lol.

@@zippolyonsden1623 😊 Thankyou for replying, I've noticed my flint is getting short, like maybe 2mm deep so I wrestled a flint out of a Bic lighter but the wheel won't spin.. 😯 I'm thinkin' the flint is too long, putting too much pressure on the striking wheel. Maybe if I cut it in half it would go alright? It's about 6mm long..?

It may be too long. Maybe loosen the spring screw a little bit and see if that helps. I've never tried a Bic flint in my Zippo before. Zippo flints will work even when worn down to just a couple mm. I usually do not change mine until they do not spark anymore.

It definitely will hold a special place in my collection. I've been able to find out a lot about the soldier who originally owned it as well. Turns out he was from Wisconsin as well.

It definitely is in beautiful shape. I was surprised when I saw it.

He past away in 1974 and both of his children have also passed away. His son in 2020. It was one of his grandchildren that sold it to the place I acquired it from.

It does have a really sweet sound. I can only imagine how long it's been since it was last used.

Oh, cool! May have to take you up on that. I'm waiting for the tool I need in order to rivet the spring in correctly. The one I currently have is too big. It's made for the flat and not the humped cam springs. Should be here by the end of the month.

That is so cool!!! That is the same guy I had found as well!! Thank you for finding his actual obituary. For me, it's really cool to find out he was from Door County as well. My family stems from there. Next time I'm in Sturgeon Bay, I'll have to stop at their library and print out his obituary. He definitely saw a lot of action during WWII.

@@zippolyonsden1623 One of his letters from North Africa mentioned the Red Cross care packages they were getting from home with fruit, candy, and cigarettes. The whole letters aren't published in the newspaper, just little bits the parents must have told to the editor or a reporter. It sounds a lot like the stories in that Ernie Pyle book!

Fully agree. I know I'll most likely never own an authentic one. Which makes this one a great addition to my collection. I, too, also appreciate that Riley's 66 and the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation decided to produce these Zippos. Ernie Pyle really is an icon of American WWII history.

Very cool they have some of his writings! They are definitely good reads! Filled with lots of info as to how it was during the war for the American troops.

I'm thinking about getting the chrome version as well. I have about four lighters I rotate periodically for use at home or while out and about. One with a pipe insert the rest with regular inserts.

I disagree with ZF77O on this one. It is a tribute to one of the worlds greatest journalists who paid the ultimate price for doing his job. As zf77o is Canadian I can understand this one wouldn't have much meaning to him, but as an American I Love that they paid tribute to him. It's well deserved and worth every penny it cost to show due respect. 🇺🇸
