The care you show for somebody’s loved ones headstone has helped restore my faith in humanity
as a jeweler of 50+ years I love seeing how tech has changed our chosen occupations have changed. one of my customers was the number 1 stone cutter in Austin, at his funeral it truly was a who's of famous texans. It was nice to see talent appreciated even if it was at his funeral. keep the skills honed.
RIP Butch.
Funny as shit,lmao
@@sambo1298 glad it was so easy to entertain you
Interesting, but what did you do with what and why did you do it?
@@lionelscout, I've created this video to explain everything: ruclips.net/video/riSnixStUeA/видео.html
What is the mask made out of? surprisingly durable. Im assuming you cut it on a regular knife plotter?
I’m just seeing this video in 2024. Having worked for an art glass company for 27 years you did a great job on the video. Have you sandblast other media such as wood or glass? Are you having fun with it? It is a talent that not many know. It’s the first video I’ve seen that I can connect with.
Don't pay attention to all the negative comments. You are very skilled at what you do. This project turned out very nice! Would you recommend a stencil printer that wouldn't be too expensive? Do you know if there is a quality lower end option besides the ADSI 536 gts?
@@connectingwiththeoutdoors81 I try but sometimes it's too much... As far as stencil cutters, it depends on the size of the stencil. Gerber has decent low end 24" plotters with software for a good price. Not sure they are even still in business but I'm sure ebay would be a good bet. Anything larger would require a good internet search. Also thank you for the kind words and of course, thanks for watching!
Poor Butch
I’m amazed this guy has a job considering everything could be done with robots and you could have a completely computerized system.
it looks like crap, I'll rather something more classical
It’s surprising that the sandblasting is able to penetrate so deep into the granite while not destroying the rubber template
@@StevenSugoi so long as the nozzle keeps moving, it enough protection. If that nozzle stops in one spot for more than a few seconds, it will burn right through it and damage the stone
The most inefficient way imaginable.
@@rebel_ltz you must work for a competitor
This is an old method of engraving. A CNC machine can work faster, but not everyone has one.
Interesting video sir 👍
@@TeraMrByte thank you and thanks for watching!
umständlich aber ok
The narration makes it much better! I happened to see the other video first, then wanted to see this with the better explanation. Interesting to learn about this.
I'm lost. When did it get engraved? It looks like it was just sand blasted twice & painted over a stencil...I always thought a cnc machine or old fashioned "hammer & chisel' did the work.
They have not used hand tools to etch Headstones for at least 50years, all done with sand blasting and a CNC plotter used to cut the stencil.
@pijnto So, that sandblasting for second time (unmanned) was actually doing the engraving then?
@@marleyboy7732 Yep. The first sandblasting was only superficial to dull the surface where the text should come. The second one “digs” deeper (that’s why it was unmanned, it’s too dangerous with that high pressure) and that kind of “carved” out the letters. If you would look at it closely it will appear as being chiseled…..
@Capt.PitbullDad Oh wow! That's actually pretty cool.
@@marleyboy7732 It is, right.?! I hope that your question is answered?
Crazy to think there’s someone out there who’s gonna engrave your headstone one day. Crazier to think that you might meet them as well and never know it.
I’m a bit confused It says engraving But I saw spray painting wtf
@@mungogerryjnr at 6:04 the sandblast engraving begins
@ but the paint will fade and then it’s barely noticeable Finally after time it will erode as it’s barely scratched the surface Seems cheating to me and probably for the same cost probably even more🤷♂️ Nah all that has done is make me more determined to have a proper stone done by chisel
@mungogerryjnr lol. It blasts more than a quarter inch into solid granite. Plus that paint is specifically designed for monuments and made to last.
@ oh right so it blast the stone but not the paper ah Seriously
@mungogerryjnr it's a rubber stencil. The aluminum oxide bounces off as long as the nozzle keeps moving
Decent stone mason artisan with skills and chisels needed here...not technology.
And it’s not even technological, they moved the stone 17 times. 😆
Could you explain the steps in the video? Im watching it but it would be nice to have some understanding of what is exactly happening and why. Did you cut the letters from the setencil by hand is it blasted by sand with what do you coat it etc.
@@erikcramer I posted this video with narration to better explain what is happening for each step: ruclips.net/video/riSnixStUeA/видео.html
@@night_al that's perfect. I've once seen a guy do it by hand, the amount of dust that was in his face and nose was crazy. Also that they don't wear PPE happy you do ;)
I would wear the PPE while blowing away the dust though, aswell as with the camp fuel, gloves and safety glasses if your ventilation is really good you might be able to skip a mask but not sure. Reading the SDS they don't say much good stuff about it..
Everyone's dying to get a headstone.
I only wish he had the same skills as myself and was able to do it with a hammer and chisel. Its sad to see my craft being cheapened 😢
How is this possible for this to show up on my RUclips when my dad just passed away yesterday 12/8/2024. Is there a higher entity trying to tell me something? I've never had anything like this show up before until a day after he passed
@@russellterral29 im so sorry for your loss. I hope this comment finds you healing. I can't control the RUclips algorithm. All I ask is that if you decide to get a headstone, please do so from a monument company. A funeral home will mark up the price considerably. Cemeteries will as well. Again, I am deeply sorry this somehow found it's way in your recommended so soon after. My condolences.
I have a cousin named Butch. He's named after his mom.
But somehow it takes almost a year to get the stone placed..
@@jacizaci_3 depends on where you got it. Through the cemetery or the funeral home... We are a solely a monument dealer. We create a stone and normally set it ourselves within a week
Interesting but what was used for the masking material some sort of rubber ?
@@jamie-ox8sg exactly. 3M stencil. About an 1/8" thickness

So it shall be written, so it shall be done.
It's a grave situation 😢
@@johnkelly2279 deathly serious
RIP M.Woods
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Do you think it's related to the aluminum oxide and chemicals used in headstone engraving? I'm asking because I also use chemicals and spray paint for home projects, but not professionally, and I don't always use the proper protection. Wishing you well and good luck,.
What I don’t get is how the sand could engrave the words on the marble (or granite), but not take away the paper around it. Paper is softer than stone, so how did it survive with such accuracy to make the letters and numbers in the stone so precise?
@@Rockin_Ross the stencil is made of 1/8" rubber. The aluminum oxide bounces off. If the nozzle were to stop, it would burn through and definitely ruin the stone
Seems a computerized engraving machine would've gotten it done just uh little bit faster.
@@tenfour000 Considering the diamond etcher we have takes anywhere from 2-6 hours to just etch a portrait. This whole process was roughly 2 hours.
Im honestly surprised this isnt CNCd at this point. Very interesting.
I didn’t think I’d be bummed about how headstones were made…I thought you’d chisel it with your hands, this was incredibly unimpressive.
Ok bud
In real time how long does that take?

This is my favorite thing about the comments section: the people who more often than not know absolutely nothing about what they’re talking about and instead of just moving on and watching something else, they feel compelled to say something negative about what they just watched. “Chisel and hammer”. You try it that way and then tell us that you think that’s the best way to do this. I really enjoyed the video. I’ve always wondered how that was done and I appreciate you showing us. @@jamesstephenpeyton3305
Oh my God, I didn’t know Harald had passed.
How deep into the stone does the lettering go? Looks like standard ¹/¹⁶" lettering. Very shallow to me. Unlike traditional deep V-cut lettering that'll last longer through the years.
@@harbottle8580 it is v cut. The 1" letters are at least a 1/4" deep. The last name is at least 3/8 or more
I'm still none the wiser. What are all the sprays and chemicals for? Where's the hammer and chisel?
@@David-th2ug at 6:04 it's sand blasted. After that the sprays are monument paint and the chemical at the end is camp fuel. it's used to remove excess glue left over from the stencil. And to be honest, at the rate population has exploded and the rate people die, there's no time for a hammer and chisel. We'd still be chiseling stones from all the deaths during covid...
You know, people are just dying to get one of these headstones.
Yipes! Thats a lot of work.. do you do urns???
