How to Play the Piano WITHOUT Looking Down: Try these Tips! 🎹☺️
Thanks for the strength training analogy. I’m at 3# literally working towards 8#. That made sense!
One consideration not often discussed is distance from piano to support cross hand playing. If I sit too close my left hand can't play notes higher than middle C. What is the recommended range for cross hand playing? Thanks
Dunno if you answer questions but I will take the shot, while I understand the concept there are some keys configurations where I feel there is more to it in terms of optimizing, right now I'm doing the same exercise but with E flat major, there is a point where I got to move from the 2nd inversion to the 1st inversion descending, getting my fourth finger on the E flat seem to involve using my pinky as a pivot, so there is two movements, the rotation and then the pivoting, I'm doing this correctly? With other keys, C major for example, rotation is enough
Your insights are awesome! Thank you for taking the time.
I'm just about to try this sonata. This will be very helpful. Thank you very much!! You play beautifully
So helpful!
I'm so glad!
Professor Boyd, you are great! You explain things concretely and with a very positive energy! Greetings from Portugal ❤
Thank you so much for your encouragement! Glad it was useful!
Thanks Kate.🎉
You’re welcome 😊
That is why he was a genius.
I certainly agree!
thank you very much! from Greece 👍
I wanted to ask something not really related to your video. Did you ever had a piece that you just can't play without making any mistakes ? The Bach invention 6 is just driving me crazy. I play it and I make just a small mistake. Ok I work a bit that mistake and there's no problem with that part actually. So I start the piece again and I make another mistake. Again I work it and start again... and again and again with more and more mistakes as if the more I play it the more mistakes I make. I know that piece. I've been on it for 2 months now and I don't know what to do. I'm desperate.
Getting help from a teacher would be a good idea at this point. Also, working on audiating the music you are playing:)
Thanks❤
No problem! ❤️
Dear Professor Kate, Thanks for great explanation, I have been learning from you. Would you please do very little video on wrist movements along with fingers " Ode to Joy" may be this assit us significantly. Thanks you again.
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you 🙏🏾
You are so welcome!
I adore your videos. I just started taking lessons , and my teacher is consistently surprised with the approach and knowledge I have to learning , and that’s very much because of your videos. Def a RUclips channel anyone learning can benefit greatly from
You are so welcome! I am so glad to hear these videos have been useful and that you are seeing progress in your playing from applying what you have learned!
Wow
Tkanks!
You are most welcome!
I heard somewhere along the way that when practicing with arm weight, we should practice dropping down onto every single individual note, even though the passage wouldn’t necessarily be played that way in real time. This sounds similar to your step 5, except doing this with actual repertoire that I’ve already learned to play (with a lot of tension lol). Do you agree with applying this practice method to existing repertoire? TIA!
Thanks so much for your tips and your very appealing presentation of them! Love your playing, too.
Thank you so much. I am glad these tips have been helpful!
Thanks for the tip! I’m working on this now and have some of it on my channel - check it out if you’d like :)
This is a great tutorial I am learning to play legato as I started out teaching myself and that was incorrect now I have to learn again. Well done.
I'm so glad this video was helpful to you! Best of luck as you are learning, and happy practicing!
Usually, the publisher fingerings have me do uncomfortable bogus that can easily be changed with a single thought, so I tend to ignore them entirely and make up my own. Very rarely I can’t figure it out and have to look at publisher fingering
You are an astounding teacher
Thank you so much! 😊
I don't know why this reached me as I am definitely not a pianist, but as a violinist, I'd like to add that this goes for most other instruments. Sometimes the publisher is wrong and is making you do dumb stuff you don't wanna do. But it's a good place to start
You are exactly right. I am glad that you've found this applicable to your violin music study as well! Happy practicing! 😊
I’ve been playing piano for a decade, why the fuck are you fingering a piano?
“Pink Cadillac” is another 2:3 mnemonic I was taught.
That is another helpful one! Thank you for the recommendation!
You’re such a natural.
Thank you for your encouragement! ❤️
How about backpain? I feel good mostly everywhere, but my back starts to ache after a while :(
🎹❤️
This is really helpful. Lot's of "don't do this" tutorials but this is a super practical approach.
I'm so glad this video offered a helpful, fresh, and practical perspective for you!
Be born Jerry Lee Lewis
While I was an accompanying graduate student, I learned a few "secret" fingerings in some of the well-known repertoire. Conventional fingering was possible but the "special" fingering unlocked the technique needed.
I'm glad you were able to discover fingerings that worked best for you! Sometimes an alternative fingering is best to maintain suitable, proper technique. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the valuable lesson, as always!
I'm glad it was helpful to you! Thank you, and happy practicing!
Love the sheet music that has fingering patterns
Thank you for your videos. Most helpful. I'd like to know your thoughts on pianist Jose Iturbi's (1895-1980) hands when they play piano. To me, they appear very stiff with bent fingers, yet he appears to play well.
How many hearts have you broken at the time of this photo ?! :))) That was a deeply felt smile.
Finally someone who speaks eloquently about mental practice ! I would have not been successful at learning piano parts and orchestral scores without it ! In fact, I had to do it so much when I studied conducting, in the subway, hotel rooms, airplanes, trains. It forces you to 'hear' in your head what you look at on a page. I consider mental practice necessary to solve any blockage you may experience at playing a passage. I can also attest that when I was doing mental practice daily, I could 'hear' better orchestral scores of Bartok, Webern, Schoenberg, Beethoven or Schumann than I do now :)
This show even the talented people put a lot of effort fixing their mistake before showing perfection on stage.
Thanks ❤
A tes ordres. I’ve been lazy about keeping my practice journal. I make an entry every day but I wasn’t saying anything. I fetched (nice doggy, n’est-ce pas?) my journal and made the changes. Merci
What about the fingering in the twos against three passage?
So awesome and helpful
For me it wasn’t hard until quintuplets were introduced
This made me think about Horowitz. Here is an interesting article about his "flat finger" an less motion style: thepianobear.wordpress.com/2017/09/29/vladimir-horowitz-flat-fingers/
Thank you for this reinforcement of basics. You said a word which I think represents the value of your instruction: granular. These videos help me to stand back and rethink, in detail, what I am doing at the piano. So... time for me to go granular and work out my mistakes!
Solid advice
Thanks 🎉 This is helpful.
Thank you for your information. Xx
You’re young. You’re not arthritic. My hands and wrists sound like maracas. I wish someone would figure out how severely arthritic people can enjoy playing piano.
