i think genderfluid or simply a gay man who is also a drag queen would be more fitting if it was written in the current climate as he/him pronouns are still used as well as she/her when Angel's in skirts and heels. transgender would mean collins would probably have never used "he" in reference to Angel cause he did love Angel a lot and probably understood and respected all of that.

I took it to mean in the heat of the moment, a lot of people aren’t thinking about the consequences of not protecting themselves (e.g. don’t have condoms but not caring in the moment or don’t want to use them because it doesn’t feel as good or is a mood killer) and that accidents happen that could change your life forever because of one sexual encounter with someone infected with hiv/aids. I think it’s a layer of things actually if you want to look into it but I suppose it means different things to different people.

Contact i think has two meanings of contact between people during sex and contact also being Angels last plea coming from his final moments. The warning comes right after they all have their own sexual encounters and he's warning them to protect themselves

It is a great lead-in to Angel’s death. The art of musical theatre allows you to create these musical interludes that help you feel the emotions of the character during intense moments. The synthesizer, the sexual moans, the spotlight, dancing under the bedsheet, the high pitched screams.... it conveys the intensity of Angel’s mental and physical pain during the moments leading up his death. I guess a potential issue with the song is that it may lead someone to believe that AIDS is only sexually transmitted. Maybe Larson should have expounded on how Roger got AIDS, which could have come from a needle that he shared with his late girlfriend.

I think it's like a feaver dream. Angel stands at the gates to the afterlife (if you believe in that). And that's just what angel maybe thinks the afterlife is. One big orgy or one big sexy party. That's what I think. But I strongly disagree with you A Koala Bear 🐨, because I don't think this is interruppting anything. It's right where it needs to be. And Angel goes into the afterlife with a party, which just is perfect for her character, because she wasn't sad that she had aids. She didn't get depressed like Roger. She just celebrated the life as it was for her. So I think that is a pretty good written end for Angel's extraordinary life.

It's a metaphor. The orgy is symbolic of their unity as a group, but once angel dies, the orgy suddenly turns sour representing the end of their relationships. Things were already straining before but Angels death was the breaking point for them all

Replying to a 4 year old comment because reasons. Assuming that it's Joanne and Maureen having sex (that is the implication, I think, with their messy on-again-off-again relationship) I've always taken it to mean Maureen was using a strap-on and, uhh, missed one hole for the other, as it sounds remarkably like how a guy would excuse "accidental" anal on his partner. Yes as i have seen rent a lot so let me explain it to you. Angel has been fighting with aids and she goes to a support group. In this song everybody is having sex because aids and hiv are sex related diseases. So sadly in this song Angel dies
