I mean, I guess you get used to the accent and slangs as you get more immersed in the Kiwi society and you naturally acquire them. In my journey, studying English as FL, I couldn't understand many words and accents at the beginning (especially from the UK) but as I've been immersed in the language (as I could living in a community when English is not spoken), eventually I started to understand better those words and accents.
