Welcome to the world of Microlight flexwing/weightshift flying - I passed my GST in 2021 and am a qualified microlight pilot. I am a member at East of Scotland Microlights, flying from East Fortune Airfield in East Lothian, Scotland.
Waking up Lindisfarne Festival
Random as F : 1. somehow failing to record audio & 2. Just happening to choose to fly over what turned out to be a Festival that is only there for 2 days!
Note that was the Festival would technically be counted as an 'event' or large gathering under air law I flew around, not over, and stayed high and let the camera do the zooming!

I had 2 lessons at Balado last Friday, and the conditions were the exact same. The windsock was hanging vertical at the field, but the wind was about 26kts at 3000ft. We hadn’t even crossed back over the airfield to head north, and I was so close to asking the instructor to bring us back into land. Thanks for uploading this video, I now understand why the turbulence was so bad.
Hope you enjoyed your lessons! Wind conditions are always interesting to try and understand when you're in the air and in the middle of it all 🤣
@@InducedBank when I landed and walked into the clubhouse to tell my buddy his second hour of instruction was cancelled, he was just as relieved as I was not to be going up again. Our first lesson/experience was mid-September. We couldn't have chosen a better day for our first time in the air. So to go from perfect conditions with the odd bump, to that was a bit a confidence killer. It hasn't put us off though. Did we enjoy it? Absolutely not 😂🤣😂
Nice one Mike. It takes a fair bit of force to hold the bar back and keep the nose down to reach ‘vne’. Very satisfying to do your own check flight though!
Thanks Peter, it was indeed very satisfying, and a whole new experience 😁
You mean greaser!
Ha ha! I guess either term works 🤣
Nicely done
Cheers Giles! Wish they were all as smooth as that 🤣
Lovely place
Thanks Brian 😁
I'm so privileged too live near by
Clear air turbulence is always a bit weird when you've been in smooth air for a while.
Cheers Giles, yep a bit unexpected 🤣 There's always theories what caused it, but doesn't make it any less unsettling when it comes out of the blue 🤣
@@InducedBank yep, I'm with you there.
Que increíble 😮
Merci!!
¡¡Muchas gracias!!
Pure magic, sir. 👍
Many thanks!!!
I enjoyed the voice over Mike, perhaps you should incorporate it more? Lovely video.
Cheers Terry, appreciate that - I'm not anywhere as comfortable with doing a voice over, but I know how well you do it so maybe I'm holding myself to a higher standard than I should 🤣
Thanks for uploading another beautiful video. Feeling the need to explore your part of the world! I've cycled, driven and walked through it but never flown. Right on the cusp of GST so hopefully it's not too far off. Best wishes Mike, catch you soon. 👍
Thanks! Exciting times for you! Best of luck with the GST when it happens!
@@InducedBank Thanks, Mike!
I hope while flying you're listening to this racket! And that's any kind of music.
Hey Dave, probably a bit of a dodgy choice of music for this one, you'll notice I didn't follow the theme with the subsequent videos 🤣
Just beautiful 👍
Cheers Patrick 👍
Awesome flight! Yup… I’ve had a few ‘User Error’ flights myself… they make good B-roll.
Cheers mate, yep good shout!! 👍
👍great video awesome
Many thanks!!!
Great to see this done and the challenges it presents. Its also partly subjective in some areas, but it also allows for a trend change of aircraft performance over the years, eg stall speed.
Thanks Giles, it was my first permit check flight and I took lots of notes from the BMAA check flight video before embarking on this one! The fun bit was as it was post a wing service, I inspected that, signed it off, finished rebuilding the wing before attaching it back to the trike, and then flying it with my wife! Yes, I double checked everything!
VNE test is bonkers, what's a fail, if the wing falls off? The most ridiculous test ever, I'm sure most just pop in the book figure. Great explainer video Mike.
Cheers Terry! As long as we get within 5mph of VNE (and the wings don't fall off!) it's a pass on that part - what we're looking for, and that's where the passenger is great (as well as bringing you as close to MAU as you can be - another requirement) to see if there's any flutter on the trailing edge as the speed increases - quite why that might happen or how it would be fixed I don't actually know!
Its been asked a few times over the years.
Very 👍 If mine makes it off the ground and down safely it's a pass 🤣
Cheers Patrick! I love how the check flight form asks if the landing behaviour is normal - blasted well better be 🤣
Yes, it is heavy to turn in a microlight. It's a "Weight shift" aircraft so you are tossing around the weight of the pod, motor and occupants. That will be close to 300Kgs. When he learns about the "Trim speed" of the wing, he'll see that the aircraft will fly "Hands off" at that speed and all that will be necessary is course correction. Also, flying from the back seat with the training bars is totally different (heavier still!) from flying in the front seat. You are so lucky that he is interested in the flying. So many flyers' families are not.
Cheers! Yep, definitely harder work from the back seat! 💪
That's GOOD it not easy to move....just like the trigger on a revolver.
Cheers Carl! A very interesting analogy 🤣
A lovely thing to be able to share flying with your son. 👍😍
Thanks! Made so much easier than he's genuinely keen to get up and fly!
You've made a rod for your own back there Mike, TM is going to be a share-o-plane before you know it 🙂
Cheers Terry! Really fun to take family up to share the fun!!
Nice one Mike! Imagine having three pilots in the family!
Thanks Graeme! That would be entertaining Indeed 🤣
Those initial over controlling and pull are the same with almost everyone that tries it.
Thanks Giles - yep - I bet I did that when I was learning and have now forgotten!! And to be fair, from the back seat, it must be incrementally harder to judge the attitude!
Sharing the joy of aviation is such a special time. Thanks for sharing Mike.
Thanks Giles!!
👍
Cheers Patrick, good to see you're still around! Really appreciate your support! 👍
I would not fly in such turbulence.
Hey Carl, that wasn't too bad to be honest, and while we do try and pick days with minimal turbulence, sometimes you just find areas of it and just have to deal with it. As my flying experience has grown I've got much more relaxed about it. The plane is more than capable of handling it, so now I'm way more comfortable with it (to a point!) it's not as much of a concern 👍
Nice flight Mike👌
Thanks Lee 😁
Yes! Great to see you back Mike 👍👍👍👍 Stunning scenery love to fly that area.
Cheers Terry, really enjoying being back in the air - 3 flights in a very short time after a long lay off!
I imagine Sisyphus happy
Is that Happiness in the face of adversity? I don't consider flying to be adversity 🤣 May well have completely misunderstood though!! 🤣
@InducedBank you are chasing your shadow. You will never catch up to your shadow so long as the sun still shines behind you, and you are happy because you can see. Idk I'm just making that up as I go
Always a pleasure to see a new video pop up from you, Mike. Thanks for another view of your beautiful part of the world. 👍
Many thanks as always, really appreciate your support - and patience!!
Great to see you back in the air Mike. Love the camera mount.
Cheers Giles, loving being back in the air finally! Bit of a complicated setup for the 360 but pleased with the way it's working!
Great to see you back - with another brilliant vid!
Many thanks TopCat 👍😁 Great to back out enjoying the freedom of the air!
Beautiful
Thanks!!!
@@InducedBank I think it's quite an amazing shot actually
Also called landing 🛬 lol
Cheers Mark!!
Nice video. I really enjoyed the flexwing short take off
Cheers again Keith!
Keep up the great work Mike, I love seeing you fly. Can we possibly have a tour of the cockpit please? Enjoy and fly safe Mike
Many thanks Mike! A really interesting thought - one to ponder how to do - but something I'll definitely look to tackle 👍
From someone that flys Boeing for a living the takeoff roll was specifically short. Most every airline operator in the world utilises reduced thrust take off procedures to minimise wear and tear on the engines, and with every takeoff the end of the runway looking like it’s approaching rapidly by the time the V1, Rotate call comes. Entrusting our life, lives of the passengers and of course our careers to the validity of the Boeing performance tool loaded on the iPad. Many years back when when using performance tables provided by performance engineering specialists, I recall the company changed to a different provider for this service. With the change over we couldn’t pull as much weight out of some of the more limiting runways. Go figure, very same airplane. Hopefully these days the science is a lot better but what this means is the margin for error is reduced. Saying all this it’s still orders of magnitude safer than flying around with a lawnmower strapped to your back, but no where near as much fun.
Many thanks! You couldn't really get much different aeroplanes 🤣 Almost all the modern Flexwings fly with a Rotax 912 four stroke aero engine. Apart from the engine difference, the hours are another - for example my syndicate plane only has around 850 hours on it, where the commercial jets likely are in the tens of thousands of hours!
Great video and nice music 🎶. Thanks
Cheers Keith!!
It looked pretty rough that one Mike!…
Cheers Lee, yep, a tad bumpy!
How long it takes to do a basic course on Microlight flying sir.
Hey! Can only really say from the UK perspective, and the two biggest limitations are money, and weather! Assuming money is ok, then around 45 hours logged is average, and 8 months to a year is achievable - with enough flyable weather!
Nice video
Many thanks!!
Hi do you have a reserve chute.
Hi Sam - no - although microlights can be fitted with a 'Ballistic Recovery Chute' I have actually never come across a flexwing with that fitted - we really shouldn't need one - Flexwings are basically a very advanced hang glider, with an engine. Turn the engine off and the plane glides very well. The training includes a LOT of engine failure practice, and we can land in most fields etc safely enough.
@@InducedBank Hi have had 10 hours flying a flexwing a few years ago i think the revo are fitted with the ballistic chute thanks for the info.
Excellent flight.
Cheers Simon!
you should make some arrival and departure videos to help visiting pilots.
Good idea Giles!! Thanks!!
How are you enjoying the X4?
Hi Giles! Yes, but still a lot to learn about it!
That looked bumpy...relax..relax.
Cheers Giles - yes, relax, relax, is the mantra in my head!
Thanks, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Seattle Washington
Many thanks Brian! Great to hear that, thanks for Scotland 👍
Getting some good shots with the 360.
Cheers Giles, very much still learning how to get the best out of it!
Thanks
Cheers, hope you enjoyed it!
360 (I assuming you had it at 8k) is never as good a quality as regular 4k however I thought the 360 footage was very good. I love my Insta 360 One R which is getting old now but it sits under the aircraft so if I damaged or lost it I wouldn't be too gutted, however not sure I'd want to put an x4 under there just yet :-) Stunning footage around the clouds Mike and some very nice landings. Brilliant.
Many thanks Terry! It was set at full 8K so the cropped footage would still be good enough to meet the 2K quality. It was a very expensive purchase, and will hopefully provide lots of good footage. Still need to figure out the best way/place to mount it with minimal risk of losing it if the boom failed...
Another lovely flight by the look of it, Mike. And good to see you experimenting with the X4. 🙂
Cheers Dan, definitely a good flight in great conditions (as long as I kept away from the overland turbulence!) . Much X4 experimentation to follow!
Honestly, I don’t like the 360 cameras, ok for special shots here and there, but not for long. ..keep with normal stuff. 👍🏼
Cheers John, really appreciate the honest feedback 👌 Thank you!
@@InducedBank I enjoy watching your videos , as a flexwing pilot myself I hope one day to venture up your way. Feels like the flying season is just starting , I just went to Popham Saturday… first nice day that fell on a day off in 6 months. Let’s hope we have a good year this year. Fly safe . John
