Hello mate. Do you any good finch breeders please?
I heard locally that having a hay ball can be helpful for finch health as well. Im getting into having birds in my game room (where my dogs and the wives cats arent allowed) so i was wondering if you would agree that maybe having that hay ball for them to pick at could be helpful
@@mattygames1369 hey Matty! Depends on the type of hay. If the type sold for small pets, its generally to be eaten and so not good to leave out for long periods. Hay can grow mould pretty quickly, & harbours a lot of bacteria if left - which is obviously dangerous for your finches. I would definitely disagree that its “helpful for finch health”. Quite the opposite. There are much safer materials out there that can be used for both mental stimulation and for nesting materials. The risk far outweighs the advantages imo. Dust, mould & bacteria are why id say no to this, Matty 👍🏻
these videos discourage me to own any birds, its like a fulltime job
@@aadamahmed2558 unfortunately, it's not as easy as you would think - and it is a full-time commitment that should not be underestimated. If you own birds, or any pets for that matter - you have to be prepared to put in a lot of work caring for them.
Hello. I received a finch couple as a gift a few months back. I have loved having them and I am learning as much as I can to take good care of them. Female laid some eggs and now we have baby finches. But my concern is that now it seems like that male finch is being a little aggressive with the female finch…there’s times where he won’t allow her to get back into the nest and he will chase her around picking at her. Is this normal, should I separate them for a while or what’s the best thing I can do?
@@berthachavez7911 yep, completely normal. Males can sometimes be a bit too naggy after chicks are born so you’d be best to separate them so the hen & chicks are out of harms way. You can try re-introducing after a while & keep an eye on them

Hi Dave, i have a canary that is moulting but at the same time is being hormonal, the vet told me to stop his egg food for a month and just provide regular seed, veggies and little fruit, as far as i know that birds in moulting need that ekstra protein, what do you think?
@@lilsangarden thats correct. Stopping the egg food all together seems a bit weird. Yes, extra protein is one of the things that brings birds into breeding condition, but Im quite surprised your vet suggested that. The main factor that increases the need to breed is daylight. So id suggest reducing that each day & also reducing the egg food to a couple of days a week. However, its impossible to suppress hormones completely so stopping egg food for a month will only be removing the much needed protein

Dave..... a few corrections, with Crimson finches there are 3 kinds, the white belly & two black bellied varieties, the Grey cap from the east & Black caps from the west (WA) & never known as the the 'Killer Finch' ???? . You omitted to mention the two types of Double Bars - the Black rumped ( across the north ) & White rumped varieties (east & south east). With the Black Throated Finch, there is also another sub-species known as the Chocolate Parson which inhabits northern NSW also numbers are so small they could now be extinct in the wild. Withn the Masked Finch, you omitted to mention the White-eared variety from far Nth Qld. You omitted to mention the Red-billed variety of Longtailed Finch. You omitted to mention the 'Lesser' red-browed Finch sub-species from far north Qld. I disagree with your sexing method of the Yellow Rumped finch having kept & bred them in captivity. .

Hi what is better cages or aviary if i release 12 mix fichs pairs the aviary size 4m by 6m please?
Depends how you want to breed. In cages you can target breed, but in an aviary you would be colony breeding - with both methods having their own set of challenges. Breeding cages are better imo as you know which pairs are mating, for example. Colony breeding works best when there is lots and lots of room. The size of your aviary isnt ideal for colony breeding with the amount of birds you have. Hope that helps 😊

I have to agree with your thoughts on the cat woman scene. It’s definitely cruel and unnecessary, especially when you consider that small animals such as finches are especially susceptible to death by stress. Not to mention how uncomfortable it must’ve been for the actress. Don’t put live birds in your mouth 👍
Thank you for the great video, how would I apply this to my cage set ups as I can’t split the cage and removing the birds to clean everything would be stressful on them. I would love to give there cage a complete clean the way you do but they panic a lot when I put my hand in there

@@FinchManDave I’m not sure what the name of the cage is and thank you so much for trying to help me figure this out
@@Birdmann217 you're welcome🙂 Is there no way to divide it at all?
I have 8 zebra finches, all have been treated with s76. 6 of them are 2 parents and there 4 chicks and two new birds in a separate cage. All fed egg food seed and veggies regularly. Avigold advance in water couple times a week flourish and guardian Angel sprinkled over fresh veggies before serving. I have noticed one of my birds has passed through an undigested seed today and droppings are slightly orange could be from the peppers they had just once Iv seen this. Apart from that they are all active eating and drinking. Should I be worried will ACV help this ?
@@Birdmann217 bacterial infections can cause the passing of undigested seed, amongst other ailments - but I'd certainly target that to begin with only if it's regular though? Has this only happened once or more than once? If only once, it could just be that loose seed has ended up mixed in with poop like it's been transported by foot or something. If it's one seed, that's probably the case so what I'd suggest is checking all poop over the next few days. If it's happening more than once, I'd use 5ml of acv in 250ml of water for 5 days continuously. Put it in the water first thing in the morning, then remove that water around 3-4pm and replace with fresh water only. Repeat that for 5 days. In the meantime, get yourself a pro-biotic supplement to give to the birds after this 5 day course. That's needed to re-instate the gut flora balance. I must stress though - only use this advice if the seed in poop continues. Otherwise, it's not needed 🙂 Please update me if you will
@@FinchManDave yesterday when I first noticed the droppings all the birds were perched then I heard a dropping sounded like a seed fell so I got up and had a look there was one de shelled seed in the dropping also yesterday the droppings were abit orange but that could be due to peppers they had in their veggies, but today the droppings are normal and no orange. I did give them acv today at the ratio you recommended and I ordered a probiotic which has come today so should I do another day or two of acv or go straight to the probiotic?
Also I will keep you updated with my progress thank you so much
@@Birdmann217 ok, I'd give acv tomorrow & the day after too but only 2.5ml to 250ml of water, then repeat it every month on the same 3 days. Make it a monthly maintenance course. Only 2.5ml though. No need for probiotic as it's only a low dose so not enough to mess with their gut flora. Doesn't sound to me like a problem if it's just a one off, but still check their poop daily anyway, as that can usually be the first sign of issues. The orange will probably be from the veg. Mine poop green a lot but that's the veg or perle morbide - & mine are all perfectly healthy

Hi Dave still trying to get mine to eat other food rather than just seed, different bowls on its own mixed with seed still a waiting game
@@KevinIsted you could try very finely chopping some veg/greens or mix into a mush. Mix it with the bird seed & gradually lower the amount of seed each time. This can be done a few times a day as you'll need to regularly remove & replace the veg/greens either way - so should be a quicker process. Obviously be vigilant with it as you'll want them to eat & not miss out on food because it's not seed. It really is a waiting game with some & perseverance is key so keep at it 👍
The Gouldian finch is the most beautifully colored bird in my opinion.
There's barely any fly cage around here. Because Finches aren't quite popular :/ All the fly cage come with irremovable bar floor so it's a no no for me.

Wonderful video! PETA says keeping birds in cages is cruel, but I do pretty much everything in the video except free flight. I have society finches. They will hit windows or walls and I had to stop that. I don't have a room small enough and I live in a cooler climate. Each of the eight society finches is happily mated with a sibling and does not breed, except the original father. He lost his hen to sudden death last week. She was perfect at 7:30 a.m. and dead less than a hour later. I was devastated. Late I found she had laid a shell-less egg, a problem with her and my one female zebra so I push the calcium with D3, oyster shell and homemade chicken shell. They love their pellets, greens, eggs and perle morbide. Fruit is harder. Did the egg kill he? I have successfully treated many eggbound finches over the years (including her) and she showed no signs of distress less than an hour before. There are no avian vets within a 100-mile radius of where I live in central PA.
@@jeanmank6342 thank you so much, Jean. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. You sound like you've got it all under control & seem very knowledgeable, which is so refreshing to see 😁 I've had the odd instance where one or two of mine have hit the glass door. Completely unavoidable freak out situation where they went into escape mode for no apparent reason, but luckily happened while I was there so I could make sure it was dealt with. Not something you can help sometimes though. As you've treated egg bound hens in the past, you'll know that generally they survive if they can pass the egg, so it would be quite unusual for a hen to pass after laying the egg, unless it was extremely stressful. Did you examine the cloaca on the hen? It may be that it broke before being passed & a piece didn't pass through. Was the egg shell entire? I'm so sorry this happened 😞 It's the absolute worst part of the hobby & the main reason I don't breed my birds. I'm way too attached to risk it. And I know the feeling all too well. With regards to fruit, very few finches we keep eat fruit in the wild. And although Society finches are man made, they too never seem to go for fruit. I've personally never been able to get any of my birds to eat fruit, so you're not on your own there. Sounds like the rest of the diet you provide is sufficient. I'm about to finish up a great vid on safe veg & greens which explains exactly what is contained in lots of varieties & how our birds can benefit from them, so keep an eye out for that being put out soon 🙂
@@FinchManDave Thanks for the great answer! No, I no longer breed or provide any nesting material but she did lay random eggs. The last one was clear with no shell. Her vent looked clean and unswollen.

@@lilsangarden that's sad that he flew away. You can get most birds to bond with humans providing they are hand tamed from being very young. However, tame or not - if a bird has the chance to escape into the wild from captivity, they will. So sorry you lost him 😞
