Chris Thomas
Добавлен 26 янв 2007
Hi my name is Chris Thomas. Welcome to my channel. I wear many hats in the music business. I've been a local pro in the Pittsburgh area for 20+ years. I cover a variety of styles that include staight ahead jazz to some pretty heavy rock. My day gig is as an orchestra director for kids grades 4-8. I have also been a luthier for 20+ years. I make and repair all my stuff as well as many orchestral string repairs for my students and school. Feel free to enjoy many videos that I've posted that demonstrate my guitar abilities, luthier skills and some of the crazy things I might do in the name of education. Yes I'm talking about the pep video for my schools standardized tests. :P

Wow Im impressed! You do excellent work!
Thank you ZZ !
Sounds great really
Thank you patrick!
Happy New Year Chris! I've got a Dean EABC5 with the same problem. Will this work with ply tops as well?
This video features a bass with a plywood top so, yes indeed!
Nice video, Chris. But I would have liked to how you tackled the neck. I have an Ibanez 12 that I can't get the neck off and I believe it is epoxied. Everyone tells me that I should just cut it off and convert to bolt on but I don't know how. Good video none the less.
Thank you David! Hopefully by now you've found a way to overcome your obstacles.
Great job! Heck the high dollar Taylor guitars have necks bolted on in the same way.. Sounds great!
Agreed. Thank you for watching and your comments.
Nice job. I was curious how you you bolted the neck on. Did you drill through the front of the heel, then later patch the holes, or did you use wood-mounting studs (woodscrew thread on one end to thread into the flat side of the heel, with screw thread on the other end, and drill holes thru the heel block? I didn't see any of that in your video. If you didn't include that because you prefer to keep it proprietary, I understand. Also, I never thought of doing it this way (sawing off the neck). I have steamed, but generally it takes an hour, and the epoxy never really softens---only the wood softens around the epoxy, so there is always a certain amount of wood in the dovetail that gets sacrificed--which becomes scary. Nice job. I agree about the guitar--great sounding (all of the FG series Japan red-labels are).
+Joe Brock Hi joe. Thanks for your comments. If you watch the video again I did have a small part that showed the threaded inserts into the neck heel. But you're right, I didn't show to much more of the boltting process. Sorry. Before I installed the inserts I drilled two holes into the neck block all the way through to the inside of the body. Once I did that then I clamped the neck in place. Then I used a drill bit and inserted it through the sound hole through the neck block just so the tip of the bit would mark the heel of the neck that is clapped into the right position. This little indentation from the drill bit is where I drilled for the inserts. After that it's essentially machine screws and finishing washers through the body/neck block and into those neck inserts. Youre right about epoxy never softening. This was a scary way of doing a neck reset but boy did it work great.
This sounds like a carbon copy and what an achievement. How long did it take to accomplish this? How long have you been playing guitar? And lastly could a 36 year old learn to do this? Sorry for the questions. I like asking questions of people who know much about their field and I play guitar as well. Thank you in advance and great guitar playing!
+Michael Williams Why thank you! Not too bad for a middle school music teacher if I do say so myself. How long did it take? Hmm...maybe 30+ years of intense practice and the sacrificing of my first born child for starters. Could a 36 yr old do this? Well if this 44 year old school orchestra teacher/pro guitarist/husband/father of 3 can do it, then yes, so can you. :)
WONDERFUL PIECE U GOT THERE MAN!
Hey, Chris. What a lovely guitar it is! Anyway, what is the preamp you use for this beautiful one?
stefan harmayu toghas Thank you! It's a B Band.
Hi Chris, wow I'm impressed, the sound is amazing and it looks great. I was wondering with a classical neck and head stock, does the guitar fit a Tele case? and what is your scale length. Thanks for sharing.
No it doesn't. For my gigging purposes I bought a Godin gig bag that they use for a similar model guitar. Nice, well made bag, lots of pockets and a special neck cradle spicifically to accomodate the tilt head stock. Scale length is standard 25.5" Fender scale. Thanks for your comment and question. I'm glad you enjoyed it. ~Chris
Hello, this is amazing! Is the guitar light in weight?
Very much yes!
This is an excellent repair video. I did it on my bass ( same model with the same problem) and the result was super.
Thanks John. I'm so glad it work for you. I always seem to get the awkward repairs accross my bench. Check out the Yamaha arch top video I did. That was crazy! If you ever need anything don't hesitate to drop a line. Sincerely, Chris
Very nice Chris. Any idea where I could get one of those tensioning rods?
The specific tension rod I used for this contraption was a simple 1/4" threaded rod from the hardward store. I epoxied a wing nut to the end of it. If you're loking at buying something this this for your guitar then you can get the Bridge Dr. from www.stewmac.com. If that's what you're looking to do then make sure it will fit your guitar. That's why I had to make one for this bass. Thanks for your comments. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance. ~Chris
Oh, thank you old friend!
Most of the time I feel like I'm practicing on solo gigs. That's definitely how I felt here.
Really lovely tone and playing Chris.I enjoyed hearing you!
Thank you, thank you and thank you!
Hell, yeah, Chris!!
We actually used the the movie as our inspiration to play this tune. Usually Matt Ferantte plays tenor but he wan't able to be at this gig. I aways cover his solos if that happens. I may fight him on playing over this one again. It was the first time I'd done it and man was it fun. Thank you for your kind words.
I like how it started out like the old Police version and moved into the Blue Turtle's version. The guitar solo wasn't very authentic though: Sting never had a guitarist that good in his band.
Yes a 10" radius. Thanks for you kind words.
Did you put a radius on this fretboard? Thanks very much! Excellent sounding guitar!
@johnhorneguitar The majority of my time was studying the existing wiring. It was pretty crazy in there and it really didn't work very well. This is simpler and actually gives every possible pickup combination. Thanks John.
Thank you very much!
nice job sir
@johnhorneguitar Check out parts II and III. My original plan wouldn't work because some of the original wiring was gone. I just started from scratch and made it simpler and much more functional.
Thank you! It's a fun tune to play.
Chris Thomas 23 seconds ago For this particular style of guitar I've only built this one. Overall I've been building/repairing etc since I was 14. I think it was about April of 86.'
Thank you for watching. At 2:31 I indicated what I used. It was the nylon tele featured in the video going into the IK Multimedia Stealth Plug into my MacBook into Garage Band. In short I went direct into Garage Band.
super nice playing and guitar! How long have you been building these?
what guitar is playing during the construction slideshow? Sounds more like a full acoustic nylon miked. Could you share whats being played/recorded here? Thanks!
Thanks man!
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much! The arrangement is pretty staight forward chord melody. Nothing real fancy. I was actually learning the tune and decided to record it as I was learning. I had a couple of little hacks in there but it was about 1AM when I recorded it and didn't feel like doing it again. Feel free to steal. :)
Nice Guitar ...Nicely Played...I also enjoy playing my own Home Built Super 400 copy...Don`t look for any Art-Deco inlays I`m not that clever...It is built with the same dimensions as the Gibson...If you click on my Username I have 10 postings on RUclips.
Chris, all aspects of this video are wonderful! I love your rendition of Still Warm. I am stealing it from you!
Thanks for your kind words. It is a really cool guitar and I enjoy it a great deal. Take care, Chris
Thank you very much!
Amazing guitar, nice sound and playing, thanks for the video.
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it.
great tones!
Pick away.
Thank you very much!
Superb guitar, and playing!
Thank you for noticing. I figure since I'm the one playing it, I might as well make it mine. I will have a demo of the guitar sometime soon. I also plan on doing a demo of my nylon tele too.
Thanks (I think). I'll post a vid of the guitar soon. Check out my other vid's. Can't say that I play like Eddie. Trying to cop Ed is in my past but that's not to say his influence isn't there. That's the point behind the guitar. I see many on youtube that try to re-create the various EVH axes. Can't bring myself to play a bright red or white guitar. I I'm just paying tribute to the guy who made me want to play. Thanks for watching! (PS Snot green? Really?)
Very nice guitar, good set of videos. I think I personally might have added some really hideous snot green stripes, but that's just me. I want to see you playing a note perfect rendition of eruption on it in part 4 tho
Mr. Thomas! Your so gooooooood!
@mangothefish Thanks I appreciate your kind words.
Beautiful playing. Love the Stern and Martino type lines
