JK DETROIT
Добавлен 27 сен 2020
My name is Jon (pronounced like John with a Y in place of the J) Kwiat. I am from Detroit Michigan. I started playing drums at age 10 or 11. At age 16 I got a used drum set, on which I was self-taught. I am left-handed. In the early 70s, I only saw right-handed drummers, so I initially played as a righty on a righty setup. It never felt comfortable, so I switched to playing open handed (left hand on the high hat).
I eventually played in a hard rock band in the early 80s that played the clubs in and around Detroit. After that ended, I didn't touch a drumstick for about 20 years. A couple of friends urged me to play again, so I put the kit back together and started playing again in 2007. With work and life in general I maybe got 2 or 3 hours of playing in a month. I finally retired in 2023 and am finally getting a chance to play a bit every week.
I mostly play along to songs that I have in my collection that I like and think would be fun to play.

John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers (with Peter Green) - Super-Natural
Playing along to the song "Super-Natural" from the album "A Hard Road" by John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. This song was written by and features Peter Green on guitar. Peter Green is one of my all-time favorite guitar players. He plays with so much emotion and soul, and his sound is unmistakable. This version of the Bluesbreakers included Peter Green and John McVie (bass) who formed the original (and my favorite version of) Fleetwood Mac. The drummer is Aynsley Dunbar, who played drums with just about everybody (Frank Zappa, Journey, Jefferson Starship, Whitesnake, and many others). I became a fan of Peter Green's guitar playing and singing after hearing the original Fleetwood Mac on De...

Rolling Stones - Citadel drum cover

Playing along to the song "Citadel" from the album "Majesties Request" by the Rolling Stones. It's a great garage rock psychedelic type song by them. The drums on the original are kind of buried beneath the music and very heavy bass, so it's hard to hear what Charlie is playing. So I'm playing it mostly my own way, and my drums are more pronounced than the record. I listened to the song a few t...

Playing along to the song "Going Down to Liverpool" by the band Katrina and the Waves. I LOVE the '80s. Of course, everybody knows them for the song "Walking on Sunshine", but they have quite a few really good songs that just never seem to get any attention. This is one of them. I didn't know until recently that the Bangles did a version of this song also. Katrina and the Waves' version is the ...

Playing along to the song "Rock It All Away" from the album "3 Pears" by Dwight Yoakam. I was never really a country music fan, but there were some artists that I did really like, The Mavericks, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle, Kenny Chesney's beach songs, and scattered songs here and there by other artists. The stuff I hear on the radio now is mostly dreadful. My sister knew I liked Dwight Yoakam a...

Playing along to the song "Second Coming" from the album "Love it to Death" by the Alice Cooper Band. A lot of people seemed to be drawn to this band for their image and stage show. For sure, they were a cool looking band. But I was always drawn to their creative songwriting with great hooks, clever lyrics, and unique sound. This song has always been one of my favorites by them. Playing along to the song "Understanding Jane" by the British band The Icicle Works. Probably their most well-known song is "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)". I like that one a lot, but they have quite a few other songs I like including the one I'm playing. I don't think it was a "hit" anywhere, but I think it's a great rock song. I love that guitar that starts around the 2:10 mark. There seems...

Playing along to the song "Heartbeat" from the album "Town and Country" by Humble Pie. The drums I play on this are pretty much completely different from the way Jerry Shirley (their drummer) played it. I love his playing with The Pie, but I decided to approach the song differently. This was from their second album released in 1969. It's Humble Pie's version of the Buddy Holly song "Heartbeat"....

Playing along to the song "Tuesday Afternoon" by the Moody Blues. These guys put out 16 albums. Nine albums from 1967 to 1981 made the top 20. Two of those made number 3, one made it to number 2, and two hit NUMBER 1!!! All USA charts. So why do we only hear one song by them (Nights) on the radio. They have so many great songs. I love the band and this song, so I enjoyed playing along to this f...

Playing along to the song "Come Unto Me" from the album "In Time" by the band The Mavericks. This is the second song I've played to from that album. I love this band: great songs, great musicians, and live they put on a great show. The drummer for the band is Paul Deakin, and I like the way he hits the drums and the feel he brings to the songs. Playing along to the song "Superstar" from the original album "Jesus Christ Superstar". The lead vocal on this is sung by Murray Head. The album went to number 1 in 1971 and this song hit number 14 on the charts the same year. I always loved this song and the drumming and thought it would be a fun song to play eventually. Great instrumental song with perfect drum accompaniment ❤
Thanks Maria. Doing something a bit different. I had fun learning it and playing it.
❤🎉
Thanks.
Rockin’ out to it! I like the breaks. Good dance song too. I always like the finishing touches.
Thanks Maria. After working on a few other songs to do, I just decided to do this one at the last minute. Some of the fadeout endings I do work, some don't. This one came out fairly decent. I didn't put a lot of thought into it, and it worked ok. Thanks for the comment.
Yeah great playing JK, I'am enjoying looking to your video. You one of my favorit drummer here on YT !
Thank you Rudy. I'm not as good a drummer as I was in my younger years, but I do ok I guess for a 68-year-old drummer. 😄 I have my own style. I don't really practice. I probably should. I try to play a variety of music. I always appreciate your comments.
Fantastic!!
Thank you. Greatly appreciated!
Thanks for this. I’m learning this for my adult band School of Rock and there was no sheet music to find anywhere ! You’ve saved me. So yes. This is me viewing your video over and over to practice with !!!!
@tinachambers5661 Thanks TIna. I'm glad the video is helping with learning this song. I did the various parts as close to the record as I could because I was playing my drums on top of the records at that time. I think if you play each section with just the basic beat of that section straight through, it would still work fine. There is a video of Ronnie Spector doing this song, and you can see the drummer there too. Good luck with the band and great to see you are playing good music.
Sounds great as always. Your playing isn’t “banging” but I still wish I could go bang on something right now for an hour or 2
Thanks Maria. Time to take up the drums. You can hit 'em and music comes out. Whenever I'm playing all I think about is the music, and any problems I have all disappear for a while.
@ Kinda how I used to feel working out but that requires a gym and being surrounded by the FL Wackos. Think I’m going to start going an hour before closing when mostly empty.
@@DrKMindFit That sounds like a good plan. Wackos are everywhere but I'm learning not to let them take up time in my head space. Life is too short. Family, friends, music, dance, art, laughter are the best antidotes to the negative energies.
Yo amó el rok de gary glitter muchos recuerdos me encantaria que hiciera su último concierto el todavía vive aun con un pasado oscuro lo amo love You gary glitter ❤❤❤❤
Muchas gracias. 👍
El hombre esta guardado por pederasta.
Total respect to you for doing that capital percussion to great music.
Thank you very much. I appreciate that. I always liked this song, this version and by The Who.
Fantastic
@GaryMalski-bi8zm Thanks Gary.
Probably the best cover i found imo
Thanks. I really appreciate that. I did this when I was kinda getting back into playing drums again. When I saw other people play it, they played the bass drum in the bridge the same way it's played in the rest of the song, but it's actually done differently. So I tried to keep it as close to the original since it's a classic.
One of my favorite songs! What a treat ❤
Thanks Maria. You got this album for me for my birthday a few years back. This was my favorite from the album. I still listen to it often.
Oh Yeah, what a nice sunday morning wake up song and your drumming great like every time, I wish you a relaxing sunday JK.
Thank you Rudy. It's Saturday night here in Detroit. I'm drinking a few beers and listening to music. I hope you have a nice Sunday there in Germany. Thank you for the comment. It's always nice to hear from you. Looking forward to hearing new music from you also.
Hey Bro! That's some good drumming!
Thanks Edz. I appreciate it. 🙂
From what I can see, you are the only one who has given this great song a crack and a fantastic job you have done with it. And a leftie like me! 🫱
Thank you very much Gordon. I know I don't play the most popular songs with my drum covers, so I don't expect very many views. But I do appreciate those who watch them and/or comment. This song has always been a favorite of mine, and I always thought it would be a fun song to play. You are right, I am a lefty. When I started playing a drum set, I did the right-handed setup because that's the only way I'd ever seen it set up. A few years later I finally saw a lefty setup when I saw Ian Paice's setup with Deep Purple. But I still play lefty on a "mostly" right-handed setup. Thanks again.
I loved that song when it came out
Hey JK, you doing well on this theme. I have to look more from Alice Cooper
Thank you Rudy. I think his best music is with this band before he went solo. Best albums are Love it to Death, Killer, Billion Dollar Babies. Muscle of Love is ok too. I'll probably cover more songs by them in the future.
Sounds great and very cool not “typical” choice from Alice Cooper
Thanks Maria. Now that I finished it, it looks pretty easy. But it took me a while to get the right sound and "feel" for the song. The first part took a little more work, the ending part with the piano was the easy part.
enormous drum sound, your kick drum makes my subwoofer dancing haha.
Thanks Rudy. I'm glad I bought this drum set. I went to the store to buy drumsticks and ended up buying this set. It can get a lot of different drum sounds. Plus, I can play drums more without worrying that my drumming will drive my wife and dog crazy because the sound is only in the headphones. 🙂 My real kit is loud, and the sound would go through the whole house. I haven't listened to this in a while. I noticed that at the beginning I was rushing a bit in my playing. I got better as I went along.
🤘🏻🔥🥁
Thank you Drummer ELT.
It IS a great song! I like everything but especially the drums matching the scream. Then the drums at 2:35 I’m going to have to have you explain some drum terminology to me in a demo so I can better articulate what I like.
Thanks Maria. Most of the song it's just the standard rock back beat on 2 and 4 (the snare drum hits). I guess the part after the guitar solo would be single stroke rolls with the first note of each four hits played a bit harder (accented) to give it that kind of train sound. I'm probably making it sound more complicated than it really is. There are no hard rules, but an average rock song would have verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo/bridge, chorus. I am not sure if the solo is considered part of the bridge or not though. I was always a bit foggy on the bridge thing. In this song there is and intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, guitar solo, then I think the bridge is the drum roll section just after the solo, and then it goes right into a chorus, and then to the outro or end.
Yeah folks, JK is drumming again. Always a joy to hear!
Thank you Rudy. I've been wanting to do a new video for a while, but I've been out and about enjoying the last bits of Summer. This one was a little harder than I thought it would be. I'm not used to playing songs at a faster tempo. I need to try to play more often to keep my drumming chops up. 😁
The sound of the guitar always reminded me of a braying dinosaur.
I like the variety in song choices. Drums always a great match and enjoyable.
Thanks Maria. Yeah, I'm one of those guys that likes a lot of different kinds of music. Guess it's because I grew up in the 70s. I even did a Humble Pie song today too.
cool, keep on rocking!
Thanks, as always, Rudy. Thank you for the encouragement.
hey JK well done. I love the sound from your drum kit. Greetings from germany.
Thank you very much Rudy. I think I get a pretty good sound from the drums, but I've been trying to get better cymbal sounds. Still working on it. Greetings to you also from Detroit. I hope you are doing well.
Oooh good song pick! Love the performance flair ❤
Thank you Maria. Greatly appreciated. I haven't played in a while, so I was hoping it came out ok. I love the song. Hopefully the drum performance was decent.
Excellent

Gary Glitter one of the greatest!
Right on , keep rockin' man! Motor City baby! hey, I have a cassette tape of your dad (Ed K.) from around 1987-88, talking about his life, if your interested .... take care and keep the music playing!
Thank you very much Art. Greatly appreciated. At 68 (almost) years old I'm finally getting a chance to get back on the drums. I'm loving it. I remember hearing your name mentioned from my Uncle Art (my Dad's brother) and my Aunt June when I visited them in Vegas. I knew you were a performer there in Vegas from their conversations. I wasn't sure if my Dad knew you, but he must have if he gave you a cassette tape. I grew up in the McGraw/Livernois area and still live in Metro-Detroit. So glad to see you playing that Detroit music and being a proud Detroiter. I'm not sure how you knew Ed was my Dad, but it is very nice to hear from you. The tape you have is probably a copy of one he gave me. He made a few. Also, thanks for letting me know you had the tape. Since my Dad will be gone now 10 years July 12, I had made a video of him singing a Polish song with a slide of pictures of his life. I haven't finished it yet and will probably post it soon. I started watching some of your videos and they are great. You're a very talented guy. I'll keep watching. My wife and I went to Vegas in September 2019 and got together with my cousin Kurt a couple nights. We planned on going back the next year, and then covid hit. If we go there in the near future I'll try and can catch your act if you are in town. Take care Art and thanks for contacting me.
@@jkdetroit961 I grew up near Michigan Ave & Livernois, went to St. Andrews and St. Hedwig. met your dad when he came to see a show I was in playing Las Vegas mid 80s, we stayed in touch for a bit, he sent me a tape of him talking about his life, and his creative projects, just found the tape in storage, he's talking about his childhood, teens years, in the service, a gal he was in love with in his teens, ( Rose Malinowski), he came back from service and she was engaged to another guy, he wanted to beat his ass!,,ha,,, she worked for Harry Blackstone the famous magician . he talked about am idea he had for television,, etc. Love my people of Southwest Detroit, they encouraged me to follow my passion to perform, and I did, and made a career of it. Planning on moving back, the west coast was never for me, I never quite fit in, but good for my career. I am stone Detroit Boy thru and thru, nothing like the real people of my DETROIT!
Sunday morning withJK great, no better way to begin my day Thank's
Why thank you very much Rudy. I always appreciate your comments. It's still very early Sunday (1:00 am) here in Detroit but it's great to hear from my friend in Germany. Looking forward to your next guitar video. You are a very talented player.
great, well done
Thank you Rudy. I had a lot of fun with this one.
Hearing this, I now remember thinking how the drums were really present in this song. Great selection and playing
Thank you very much for the comment, Dr. K. Greatly appreciated. I always thought this would be a fun song to play on drums, and I finally got to play it. Such a great well written song with excellent musicians and orchestration. Hopefully I did it justice. 🙂
Do you have sheet music for these?
@@flickdrumming1746 Hi Flick Drum. No, I do not have sheet music for this. I listened to the song a few times to learn the different parts to it. When playing, I just tried to capture the feel of the drumming on the original recording the best that I could. I did try to play certain parts of the song, like the stops and crashes that stand out the most in the song, as close to the original as possible. When I was a teenager, I could sight read any music put in front of me. But now I really can't read music anymore. Thanks for watching. You are a really good drummer. 👍
hey you make my day, great cover
Hey cool man, I am chering with your groove, greetings from germany
Thank you Rudy. Having fun here in Detroit playing along to songs I like. Thanks for watching. I enjoy your guitar videos also.
Fantastic! I'm saving this one to practice my left hand copying you (:
Thanks Sofia. I play it like this on the left floor tom because I'm left-handed. When I started learning to play the drum set as a teenager, I'd never seen a left-handed drummer or a left-handed drum set up. So I initially played like a righty on a righty set up, like Ringo Starr did. It never felt comfortable to me, so I switched to playing left-handed but kept the right-handed drum set up. So I put a floor tom on the left side, also the ride cymbal, and play the hi-hat too with my left hand. When I started following Deep Purple, that was the first time I saw a lefty drummer and a lefty set-up. That was Ian Paice, one of my favorite drummers ever. Anyway, thanks for the comment and thank you for watching. Have fun playing drums. 👍
Si empre a sido mi gran ídolo de su buena música. Como cantante fantástico pero en su vida privada no pensaba que llegaría a esos echos con todos mis respetos un 🐺 lobo de presa.
AWESOME
Thank you very much. I appreciate it. I've always loved this song since hearing when I was a youngster. I never get tired of it. Sad radio seems to have forgotten about it.
Well done JK, keep on rocking!
Thank you very much Rudy. I appreciate it. I'll be 68 in 4 months and hopefully I'll be able to play for many more years. Before I retired last year I didn't have much time for drums, but now that I have time to play I'm really enjoying it.

Such a pity he became what he did Never the less, Great Artist, Great Group . Such a distinctive sound of a time when musicians had a style and flare ? Enjoyed that Mate . Cheers ! 🏴
Thank you very much Martyn. It was a fun song to play. I've been wanting to play it for some time now. I've enjoyed his music since the 70s. Most people in the U.S. knew mainly the one song, but I like quite a few of his songs. His band had a truly unique sound. That's what I liked about bands back then. Everybody had their own sound, and you knew exactly who it was when you heard a song. I agree with you 100% that it was a shame he went on to such awful behavior. I still like the music though, especially the drummers. One of the best videos I'd ever seen was he and his band on Top of the Pops at Christmas.
Nicely done ...love your set 👍
Thank you very much. I have played it better before, but this is the best one I got while recording. I try to get them down in just a few takes. Old dog here myself at 67 years old. I'm glad I bought this set back in November 2023. This one looks and feels more like my real drums than my last e-kit. And since I've finally retired, I have more time to play. In the past, I was lucky if I got to play my drums once a month. I may record my real drums one day, but until then, these are great and a lot of fun to play.
Good song
Very well played my friend! Love your drum sound🎸
Thank you very much Rick. Greatly appreciated.

If you want to see them live they are on tour right now…!
Thanks for the info. A while back I checked to see if they were touring, but at that point they had only dates scheduled in Europe. Just the other day I got an email saying they were coming to a venue near me, so I immediately purchased two tickets. The concert will be in the Fall. I'm really looking forward to seeing them live. Again, thanks for the info.
@@jkdetroit961 They always perform a great show. I will be watching them in three weeks time here in Portsmouth, UK. Sadly, it seems their latest album may be their last but they intend to continue touring.
@@BuyOneGetOneFree They are awesome live. I just saw the clip of them doing Don't Go from the new album on Jools Holland. Enjoy the show, mate. I have to wait until October but am still pretty excited to finally see them live.
I genuinely believe that this is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written. One of many classics from OMD.
I agree. I've always liked this band, but somehow I missed hearing this song until recently. It's a fantastic song and I listen to it quite often now. I never get tired of it. Messages and Maid of Orleans will probably be the next songs by them I'll play to. They have so many great songs, and I'm glad they are still putting out quality music.
@@jkdetroit961 OMD’s original drummer, Mal Holmes, was hugely talented but unfortunately had to retire from the band due to ill health. Have a watch of his drumming on the Drury Lane live video on RUclips drumming to ‘Maid of Orleans’ back in 1981!
@@BuyOneGetOneFree Thanks. I'll check that one out. Malcolm Holmes is the drummer on the DVD I have Architecture and Morality and More. I enjoy his drumming. He's very creative with the parts he's come up with on their albums/CDs. It looks like Stuart Kershaw will be the drummer for this tour. I think he's a fantastic drummer also. He plays on a DVD called You Me OMD which I will probably buy one of these days soon.
@@jkdetroit961 I was in the audience for the ‘Architecture and Morality and more’ concert. Right in the middle of the second row. Something you may not know is that Stuart Kershaw wrote ‘Christine’ with Andy as they started working together during the time the band split.
@@BuyOneGetOneFree That had to have been awesome to see them so close for that concert. They had some seats fairly close to the stage when I bought my tickets, but the last concert I saw there (Tommy James) people stood for quite a bit of the show. My back can't take all of that standing anymore, so I got second row in the balcony, which will still give a great view since it hangs close to the stage over main floor. I did notice that Stuart co-wrote "Christine". I'm one of those weird people that would read the record labels and album covers front to back of my 45s, albums, cassettes, and CDs. 🙂 Since I didn't have the CD that "Christine" was on, I checked the info on Wikipedia. Thanks for the info though. I appreciate it.
Thank you!
You are very welcome. 🙂
