Food Labels & Carbs
In my mind, it's unfortunate that in this decade carbohydrates seem to have become the diet villain. It used to be fats, and fortunately, protein has never come under the knife.
In any case, if you're counting carbs, you really want to concern yourself with NET carbs. What are these and how to do calculate their value when most food labels do not list NET carbs??? They list TOTAL carbs only.

    Beth, your video just popped up on my feed. I thought you were new to this whole RUclips thing. I was going to suggest you make 100 videos before giving up. But then I see you have 312 videos. And then I wondered why you weren't getting a whole of subscribers. You should be getting a whole lot more. I know you probably don't want unsolicited advice. It's usually painful. But I will mention it anyway because I think your channel should have thousands, tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Everything you are doing is great. The only problem is that you are speaking to a broad audience. You should niche down. You would easily be a RUclips hero if you niched down to an audience that you could be inspired by. And that audience is your age group. So, your channel could be titled Massive Weight Loss for Women Over 65. There, done! Huge audience!

    Thank you so much for this presentation! Someone close to me passed away from esophageal cancer and the doctor confirmed that carbonation is very bad for your esophagus as it elongates it, interfering with its proper functioning leading to heartburn and GERD, which can cause cancer. I love carbonated drinks, and was recently drinking the sugar free Bubbly, but this video has convinced me to put it down for good. Thank you again for educating the public on this! I don't know who this person is or what qualifies her to discuss nutrition. However her example of good fiber to eat was celery (1.6 gm per cup), yet to get 25 grams of fiber would mean eating over 15 cups per day. Obviously no one would do that, so what kind of carbs should we eat? And what about other nutritional & health concerns might we have that would negate this high fiber diet other than constipation? For most gut issues your doctor will tell you to NOT eat fibrous foods to heal your gut. Also feeding your microbiome (she called it 'probiotics') this way is not essential to your gut health since when you change your diet your microbiome will also change. Protein and fatty acids ARE the essential macro nutrients your body requires to maintain health, not carbs. And a proper human diet will not cause constipation and will give you better energy if you eat enough of both. In fact your body is capable of creating the glucose that it needs to support your brain and blood cells without raising your insulin to do it. Eating the wrong carbs will spike insulin which over time leads to obesity and many chronic conditions that could be prevented. And certain carbs from plants are also high in toxins if not prepared properly - and some cannot be negated at all (oxalates, eg). Most people will not know how to balance their nutrients for their own particular needs and turn to supplements which often may not be bioavailable despite their claims, or to various diet hacks that might not work for them. Therefore we need to educate ourselves on what a proper diet would be since we each have different requirements. Here is a link to some Healthline articles that go into more depth on what we need to know if we want to eat carbs - and there is more to know that your doctor probably doesn't: www.healthline.com/nutrition/15-ways-to-eat-less-carbs#curb-sugar-sweetened-drinks www.healthline.com/nutrition/21-best-low-carb-vegetables#TOC_TITLE_HDR_16

    Even before this, I had heard that cardio doesn't help with weight loss. Yet, at least among the many people whom I've personally known over many decades, _consistently_ the leanest are marathon runners, i.e. people who are engaged in one of the most excessive cardio exercises of our age. So, how is it that they don't have a lot of muscle (i.e. these are _lean_ runners, not body builders) nor do they have a lot of fat, and yet they consistently eat more than most people around them (including me)?

    • @NoName-mi8js
      @NoName-mi8js Месяц назад

      Did you measure their calories in? Eating a ton of healthy food is less Calories than a donut. And how do you know they don't have a lot of muscle? Normal people with a lot of muscle don't look big in clothes. Don't confuse that with instagram models on steroids. Also, the rule of "cardio doesn't burn more calories" breaks down once you get to ultra high volume professional athletes. But being an athlete has to be your job, 8 hours a day.

    • @bevmerriman2305
      @bevmerriman2305 Месяц назад

      You are correct, marathon runners don't have a lot of excess fat storage and they don't necessarily have a low body fat percentage either. That last point is related to the fact that excessive cardio increases catabolic hormones (cortisol and adrenaline). These cause the breakdown of muscle tissue for energy and cortisol brings out fat-storing enzymes. Most certainly, marathon runners have developed a high blood volume pump per heartbeat, and increased their stroke volume and red blood cells - this gives them great endurance. They have also built up more slow twitch muscle fibres.But you will won't see a lot of toned (defined muscles) marathoners. Bodybuilders use fat as energy too, but cardio uses more (as long as the person is fit!)

    Most of this is good, but some is nonsense. lemons are acidic, not alkaline. So is honey. Weight training is effective but can’t outdo a bad diet-a diet based on a slight calorie deficit (200-300 per day) will do far better than trying to make sure you avoid acidic food.

    Problem of eating too much saturated fat - becomes bad?? Where is the explanation?

    • @bevmerriman2305

      Sorry, l find I can only try my best to keep complex topics relatively short. Saturated fats (as with trans fats) are quite different than unsaturated fats in terms of usefulness for the body. Why? Because they are not very malleable. Fatty acids and unsaturated fats have carbon and hydrogen chains with some spaces here and there. But saturated fats have been hydrogenated, leaving little movement. They get more solid when cooled. They don't have a lot of spaces, they were filled with hydrogen to buy more time on the shelves. Polyunsaturated fats stay liquid on the shelf and in the frig. I did another video on this a couple of years back. I think it's about 13 minutes long!

    sugars and insulin are the problem, not the fat..... the same amount of people that have low cholesterol have the same # of cardiac events as those with high cholesterol...Insulin resistance and pre diabetic conditions is the concern !

      Exactly!!!! Simple Carbs that get turned into excessive glucose along with Deitary Sugars, and processed foods that rapidly get converted to glucose mess with your Tryglycerides, Glucose and Insulin. Most people need to get advanced Lipid Tests that break down the Cholesterol into HDL-C, LDL-P & LDL-C Small particle and do the research what the numbers really mean. 90+% of aleopathic "physicians" only know what they are taught in the big pharma sponsored med schools. Once I got an advanced Lipid Test I was able to pinpoint what I needed to do lifestyle wise. The Doctors only wanted to put me on things like statatins that literally killed my Father without any solutions. I had to research myself and when I had throughy done so I proptly fired him.

      Sure, but you're moving into a different type of video. Sugars and insulin, various enzymes (etc). Yes, the body works as a whole. Lots of overlapping biochemical balance being sought out by various body connections. My videos discuss very particular, albeit more narrow, topics to ensure that the information can but more easily understood.

      Thank you for your positive assessment. It is sometimes difficult to convey such information in a short timeline. But often I find, people won't listen to longer videos. Do have a productive week, all the best, Bev.
