Back in the day, I rode the GDMBR and used my regular touring setup- mtn bike, front and rear panniers and slick road tires. If you're considering this trip, I'd recommend starting in Jasper so you can include the Icefields parkway (a mostly road ride) as well. It is a beautiful start to the actual off-road route. The Canadian Rockies are spectacular.

When I was in Seeley Lake, Montana the owner of the Ice Cream store I stayed overnight at told me most people start the ride in late June and early July. So if you are looking to ride/meet other riders more frequently I would suggest starting sometime around early summer. I started in early August.

It was a detour and I highly don't recommend doing what I did. If for someone reason you do what I did and go to Dillion, Montana I would suggest back tracking and going back to the official route. The official route goes through Bannack State Park and then to Lima. Dillion is off route by 20 miles.

@pauld1444 Yep, the ACA route from Bannack State Park to Lima isn't bad. Very pretty, remote, with a stream near the road. There is one steep climb before the drop down to Lima. It is a designated "Scenic Byway" dirt road in pretty good condition. ☮
