Superb video and still photos. Thanks for posting. New subber here from the UK. Best regards, John.
Thank you so much for subscribing! I'm so glad you liked it! 😍
Great video, thanks. No idea to solve your custom wide area mode, perhaps the format as you shoot 3:2 photos and 16:9 video.
Thank you, and thanks for watching! I actually shoot in 16:9 for both photo and video mode, but that's definitely something worth checking out. I'll give it a go-thanks for the tip! 😊
Takk for video og for møtet med deg på Mykines på Færøyene. Håper du fikk godt utbytte av dagene på Færøyene. 😊
Hei Robert. Takk det samme! Færøyene var helt enestående og jeg håper videoen min derfra viser det! :-)
Excellent work Frode You have so much enthusiasm, it is good to watch. I also have a Z8 with a few autofocus issues but I am gradually getting better using it Thanks for your videos
Thank you so much for your kind words, Graham! You're absolutely right-being able to handle everything the camera can do and utilizing its features appropriately is key. I appreciate your comment and your support. Good luck with your continued work with the Z8!
The colours of the viewfinder reflect the set pictures control mode. For me the Z8 is light years ahead from D850 and D500. Have you tested your camera with a native lens? In any case, enjoy your photographic journey and thanks for the videos!
Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm not 100% sure you're right on this, though. I believe the Picture Control mode should only be applied to pictures and videos not taken in any RAW format. There is a color balance tool for both the viewfinder and screen, but I've chosen to trust Nikon's decisions and have left it at the factory setting. My complaints about the viewfinder are regarding color accuracy, which I feel is not very good-although that's a subjective opinion.
So, the camera for 4500E from Nikon still has AF issues...well...
Hi, and thanks for commenting! I think I'll leave that debate alone, but I will say that Nikon is a much smaller company compared to Sony and Canon. Still, they manage to do some things better than both, so I can live with some issues. I'm sure they'll solve the AF issues soon. Thanks for watching!

Really good Z8 video i will give it a go … what lens you using
@@colpage4030 Thank you 👍😊 I'm using the 60-600 from Sigma. A lens that I'm really happy with! 👍 Thanks for watcing 🙏
The third party telephoto is holding the camera back. I'm a fan of 3rd party lenses for basic photography but tracking birds in flight they just never perform like a native lense.
Thanks for watching and thank you for sharing your thoughts! I respectfully disagree with the idea that using a third-party lens inherently holds the camera back. In my experience, the autofocus performance of a camera is more dependent on the camera’s capabilities than on the lens brand. While some native lenses may have optimizations that enhance performance (with regards to stabilization in particular), many third-party lenses are highly capable and can perform just as well in challenging scenarios like tracking birds in flight. It ultimately comes down to the specific lens model and not the brand.
@frodeaardal Its the speed and torque of the focus motors where the issue is. I had the Sony version and when I got the Sony 200-600 things changed dramatically. But I'm only referring to tracking under challenging conditions. So I didn't mean "inherantly".
A friend of mine recently bought the Z8 together with the 180-600 and he absolutely loves it! He has been shooting with Nikon for a long time and this is his first mirrorless experience. Needless to say, the Z8 is a great place for him to start shooting mirrorless! 😁👍 He is blown away by the AF performance.
Couldn't agree more. I've been out all day, and I'm so impressed and happy with what I can capture now that I used to miss! It's a bit bitter to think about all the shots and situations I could have captured, but I think it's been an important experience to come from DSLR before switching to mirrorless, to fully appreciate the capabilities! I'm still learning to get to know the camera, and I still struggle with the autofocus-especially bird detection at times-but overall, my success rate must have doubled, if not tripled. Still, I would have loved to have gotten all those shots I've missed over the years. P.S. There's a new video on its way covering my recent changes in my setup and lessons learned!
Did this guy start off the video with using Gods name in vain? What a LOSER!
I know how excited you bc are. I’ve had mine for 4 weeks now and my 600mm f4 has only come back from repair this morning. Can’t wait to get out and try it. I upgraded from D3s.
Cool. I`m sure you gonna have a great time, and get some great shots! 👍👍 Thanks for watching and commenting 😍
You can change the frame rate on evf to eliminate any lag or blackout
Hi Paul, thanks for the tips. I'm a bit uncertain whether changing the D21 setting actually improves this. "High FPS" would normally mean a higher frame rate, but many refer to this as 120Hz, which is the screen’s refresh rate, right? I’ve had the D21 setting, "High FPS Viewfinder Display," set to "On" throughout this video, so my experiences are based on that setting.
High FPS (frames per second) and refresh rate (measured in Hz) are different concepts. FPS refers to how many times an image is captured or rendered each second, while the refresh rate indicates how often the display panel refreshes and updates the image it receives.
@frodeaardal hi..I have high fps set to on....and I think refresh rate set to 60hz..been a long time since I did it and can't find it now....but I'm not having problems....give it a go
I've been looking for a camera to start my adventure with for a long time. I was thinking about something budget, but I really don't want to think about changing in half a year, so I chose the Nikon Z8. I'm still struggling with my thoughts, because it's a lot of money, but I think the decision has already been made :)
I don’t think you’ll regret getting the Z8! Compared to the Z6 III, which is probably the closest alternative from Nikon, the Z8 offers better autofocus, bird detection, much higher resolution, higher frame rates, a more flexible back screen, and significantly better video formats and performance. It’s definitely a step up in all those areas!
The OVF pentaprism is 100 times better than EVF and will last forever , once the EVF's starts to flicker good luck getting it fixed. Im keeping the D4s and my D850 you just need to be good at panning to freeze birds and you get more background motion blur separating subjects from the backgrounds and create illusion of 2 dimensional motion. Be good to see difference and try Z8 with the Nikon 180-600 most probably will focus even quicker and much sharper than the tamron. I have no trouble tracking panning with fast seagulls skimming along beach front just above waves even with a older Nikon DX D7200.
You make some solid points about the OVF pentaprism. There’s definitely something to be said for the durability and the experience of using an optical viewfinder, especially when it comes to fast-paced action like bird photography. I’d be curious to see how the Z8 with the Nikon 180-600mm stacks up too. The autofocus might be quicker, and the sharpness could be a nice bonus. My lens is the Sigma 60-600. It’s cool that you’re nailing those panning shots with the D7200-just goes to show it’s not all about the newest gear! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Maybe one day you'll get a chance to test out the Z8 and see what you think!
Thank you for your refreshingly honest review and thoughts. Yes! I have subscribed.
Thank you so much for your kind words, and thanks for subscribing!
do you share your setting in digital form (file)?
I would need to find out how to do that, but for now, I’m still exploring and learning what the camera can do, so I’m not sure there’s much value in that-at least for now. Thanks for your question, and thanks for watching!
How does the transition from DX (D500) to FX (Z8) feel?
I've literally come from a D500 to the Z8. I very small learning curve but i use crop mode on the Z8 quite a bit. The AF is much better, especially using the back screen for low level shooting. I use single point (programmed to a fn button) to grab focus in busy scenarios sometimes.
That's a really good question! The difference in format does affect the 'reach' of my lenses, and also - the Z8's higher resolution also plays a significant role. I think I'll make another video to cover this topic in more detail. Thank you so much for your question og takk for at du så på ;-)
@@frodeaardal Hei. Flotte videoer du lager. Og en video ang. overgangen fra DX til FX er i alle fall interessant, sett fra mitt ståsted...(eller fra en som sitter på gjerdet....)
Tusen takk. Sitter og skriver opp ideer "as we speak" 😉 Tror det blir en video basert på alle kommentarene og innspillene her.
Superb video! Seems like a very capable camera, and once you get really used to it it should become even better. I have an aversion to EVF's also, and nothing beats the OVF of a "real" DSLR. It should all become better once technology improves a few more notches or if they figure out a new way to have OVF. For those shooting landscapes or in studio, EVF should work perfectly fine, but when you need speedy reactions nothing beats an OVF. The Swifts and Barn swallows are tough cookies to track. So so worth it though and it is always a delight to hear them while they are flying about catching small insects. Dragonflies/Damselflies are also a lot of fun, but you would (in a perfect world) need both a super-wide angle lens to spot them in the entire surroundings they fly around in, and then a 200-600mm lens to be able to catch them in good detail in flight. Those pesky little suckers move around in at least 4 dimensions simultaneously, and it always seems like they are totally random and jump from one place to another in 0.1 microseconds.
Hahaha! 😂 I haven`t had a go on the Dragonflies yet, and with your observation of them defying both space and time - I`m doubt that I`m even worthy trying! 😄 I`m sure ill warm up to the EVF, and I`ve been using my binos a lot more. They`re far better than the D500 anyways! 😊👍 Thank you for your fantastic comments, and thank you so much for watching. Hope you have a great evening (or day/night) Frode
Takk for tipset Kjell Gunnar 👌😊
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The viewfinder adapting to white skies can be fixed by going to the wrench menu and changing viewfinder brightness to anything other than auto. If you haven’t tried already, go to d21 in the custom settings menu and turn on high fps viewfinder display and that might help with your panning issue.
Thank Ryan! And thanks for the tip, that should sort out my brightness issues. I have set it to 120 hz already, and I don't think there was much difference, I think the problem is slow framerate in the system, and then higher refresh rate don't help much. But thank to you so much for watching and you feedback! 👍😍

Welcome to the Faroes, great video and great photos, with the many tourists starting a few years before Covid, I think it took the Faroese people by surprise, especially in our small villages. After a few Wild West years where farmers would demand payment, ranging from fair to the ridiculous, the Faroese government stepped in and has just past a bill in parliament to get more structure in the tourist industry, being a small country our nature is very fragile and can not accept millions of tourists a year, therefore fair/high pricing will only get us the tourists that really want to visit our islands and not just a stop on the way to Iceland 😜 Can I ask what lens you were using and what binoculars you are using ? Thanks.

Very interesting to me as I am waiting for delivery of my new Z8 next week. I think I too may find it unusual to view using the EVF, and hope to find it acceptable after a while after using Nikon DSLR's for many years. Thank you very much for the introduction to this camera unboxing and look forward to seeing results. Good luck
Thank you Graham. I had a small test run in the garden yesterday despite the weather being horrendous, and I think I might have gotten used to the EVF in those few minutes! 😄🙈 I have to say, there is a setting that doubles the frame rate from 60 to 120 fps at a small penalty on battery consumption. It makes such a difference! So it still feels a bit like looking at a tv very late at night in a dark room, but I think this should be fine. And after taking a few pictures with bird tracking... WOW! 😍 It's a completely new world compared to my old trusty D500!
Thanks for the tip Frode Can't wait to get mine now Happy shooting 😊
You will be fine coming from an OVF to the EVF on the Z8/9. I am switching between my D500/D850 and Z9/Zf bodies frequently, and whilst it is a pretty different experience, both OVF and EVF fantastic in their own unique way. Set the Z8 EVF to high refresh and you’re golden.
