No worries. Thanks for watching
The role of religion is minor it serves to instill fear in children of going to hell and as comfort and hope for old lonely women.
Nice video! ❤ helped me to be more oriented. It would be very useful if you share the studies that correlate big five traits with succes in each carreer! It was hard for me to tell if you were sharing your opinion or you were basing off of scientific studies

Complete fallacy. We are all flawed and insecure. You're speaking avoidant language. The reason we enter relationships is to get whatever something we don't have or cannot provide for ourselves. If we can fill all our voids and provide for all our needs, we don't need to enter restrictive relationships. In fact, we don't need relationships cause although we enter them to have a diverse, more fulfilling and complete life, they end up restricting us and stifling our growth and development.
I both agree and disagree. It is true that we’re all flawed but when our goal is to fill an insecurity, even subconsciously, through a relationship then it often leads to cracks later on. The are many different levels of analysis for why people enter relationships. There’s the evolutionary reason (procreation and parenthood), the biological reason (e.g. sexual desire), social, and many tiers of psychological reasons. At the end of the day, if people enter a relationship with self awareness and for noble reasons (like building something greater than the sum of the parts) rather than to offset a negative cause then it leads to much better outcomes. A good relationship doesn’t restrict your growth, if anything, it catalyses it. Of course, you pay a price to be in a relationship but the pros should outweigh the cons if you’re lucky enough to find yourself a good partner and have the emotional maturity to recognise it
What about Femboys and Tomboys? (No offence, just wanna know the difference. 🤔)
Very good question and no offence taken. Rather than seeing personality traits as being strictly male or female correlated, it’s better thought of as masculine and feminine correlated. Because some men have more of a feminine temperament and visa versa, it means they will often resonate more with the other sex in how they think and act. Of course, generally speaking it will be the other way round but since personality is a spectrum and follows a normal distribution, it’s perfectly reasonable that you will have very assertive and dominant women and very gentle and timid men for example. The thing to notice with normal distributions is that most of the extreme stats are found in the extremes. For example, the most aggressive people are nearly all men and the most agreeable people are nearly all women. You see a lot more variation in the middle

Does research exist that links age and changes in the psyche? I am attempting to understand a personal perception how personality changes with age but completely separate from any form of dementia. It is expected to have changes in physical impulsivity as one ages as a means of self protection. Does this apply to mental and creative pursuits? Does age related cognitive decline also cause changes in ambition? Preferred social surroundings or social pursuits? If a young gifted musician experiences extreme chronic stage fright, will they ever be able to overcome this phobia without very much effort? Or would they need to embark on years of growing coping abilities?
Yeah that’s a good question. The research shows that as you age, in general you become less neurotic, more conscientious (orderly) and often less open. It sort of makes sense if you think about it, as with age comes experience and a solidifying of perspectives and preferences. You also have more exposure to negative events and are therefore less affected by negative uncertainty. I’m going to make a video after all of the individual traits that will go into many of the stats, correlations and facts when it comes to personality and how it changes
You get a lot into a short talk, Daniel. 😊
Much appreciated! I try keep things as concise as possible
I would add The Chumscrubber

Uh Oh. Someone is walking into dangerous territory if u live in the Bible Belt, Deep Southeast USA. I do not live in the Bible belt, I live below it's buckle. No need for anyone to get their knickers in a knot. I am 43% hillbilly My kin typically are democrats, multi-ethnic *vietnamese, korean, black, whit* not much for playing war games or joining the military, but they are typically religious for the area. They draw the Mason Dixon line at snake handlers, faith healers, prosperity nonsense, drinking rat poison... BTW Mr Hamel *JD Vances real name* is full of sawdust and catty wampus ideas. Makes us madder than wet hens and pitching hissy fits It was my mother who drank the IBLP *duggar cult* koolaid. No to tv, radio, films, jewelry, make up, cutting hair, wearing pants, going to school, you get it the list is way too long. Those who try to escape as I did are often kidnapped and brought back into the family home *yes, when I was 27 my therapist rang me to say cops were on their way. Y? Because my dad and 2 church friends were driving from a different state to both kidnap me & lets say cause horrific harm to the 2 young daughters of my therapist. FUN TIMES.
Have you read and if so what did you think of Ruby Wax's book Mindfulness or How To Be Human? A HS dropout who ended up earnigh a Masters from Cambridge.
I haven’t read them actually but I’ve heard some mixed things (mostly positive). How to be human is somewhere in my reading list so I’ll likely get to it at some point
Light and dark of each would be interesting too. Low agreeable could be Hannibal but it also could be Steve Jobs or Stephen Hawking
Yeah I wanted to keep this one to just movies but I could do a separate video on other areas in the future
Steve Jobs the movie! 😁 Jk, good idea. There should be some example characters in film. That's a fun theme
That was a cool thumbnail :D
Really fun topic actually! 👏🏼
Thanks Amy 😊
Very interesting, and yes I agree! These are excellent representations of human nature. I notice tho, that these are very white male-centric films. I’m curious about your take on other films with more diverse characters.
Yeah that’s a fair question. I didn’t intentionally choose any film or characters where race is particularly central to the narrative (with one exception). Certainly if the list was longer or I wanted to cover different aspects of human nature then it’s very likely other demographics would be the focus. This will definitely be the case anyway in some of my upcoming videos that explore ideas through film and tv
Moon - as someone's who's read a lot of sci-fi, Moon didn't really have any surprises for my. The director's follow up, Source Code has a very dumb premise but is well worth a watch because of Jake Gyllenhaal. Mute was a challenging film. Grave of the Fireflies - I've not seen it but probably will one day. Another Year - not seen but Mike Leigh's Secrets and Lies is devastating. I might watch this sometime. Belfast - doesn't interest me. Anatomy of a Fall - Sandra Hüller's acting is beyond top tier. Beautifully filmed. The story left me a bit underwhelmed. It Follows - didn't leave much of an impression on me, just seemed run of the mill. Ex Machina - wasn't the film I was expecting it to be, I didn't enjoy it, seen it twice to be sure. Brooklyn - doesn't interest me. K-Pax - I remember enjoying this one, though these days I wouldn't want to watch anything with Kevin Spacey in it. Insomnia - Good film. Some suggestions: Safety Not Guaranteed The One I Love The Fall Phantom Thread The Man in the Hat
Nice review and thanks for the suggestions
@@dmorgan My pleasure. Let me know if you watch any of them and enjoy :)
How about using chapters
Sorry, I’ll add them when I get back from holiday/vacation and on future videos 👍
I would add 'The Man from Earth.'
Time stamps 🥲
Sorry, I’ll add them when I get back from holiday/vacation and on future videos 👍
Seems like a great collection of films to watch. I would also like to recommend "Master" (2016), "No Escape" (1994), "Soldier" (1998), "Buck and the Preacher" (1972), "Vicious Fun" "(2020), "Black Friday" (2021), "The Hunted" (2003), "So Close" (2002), "The Last King" (2016), and "Spaced Invaders" (1990).
Thanks for those suggestions! I’ll definitely check them out 👌
Excellent!
Thank you!
Love to get som tips for movies to watch, so thank you for that. But don’t spoil so much next time! Especially on horror films like it follows. To tell what the objective of the “monster” is soooooooo unnecessary and spoils the experience. Otherwise good tips and nice video
Thanks for the feedback. I’m usually very careful about spoilers. In this case, everything I revealed was in the first half of the movie and sort of considered the central idea rather than a spoiler but I still take your point and will keep that in mind going forward 👍
Love everything about your review . Subscribed
Thank you! ❤️
Cool video you got my like subscribe.
Thank you! Much appreciated
B4 viewing I would put $ on never having seen any of these (raised in a cult, no tv, no film, no radio, no school). Here is what I have seen 1) ever ep of Dr Who, 2)Empire of the Sun 3)Woman in the Van 4) every Agatha Christie Film made by Branagh and Broadchurch 5) All episodes of Omen and Participated in "Judgment" or "HellHouse" every year w/ the cult 6) 2001 BTW we named our Home Sec system HAL 7) No need as my Dad's family came to New Amsterdam in 1690 from Holland w/ Henry Hudson, Both sets of my grandparents came here recently from Galway *adopted obviously* 8) Every episode of Dr WhO again 9) I'm not watching anything related to Insomnia - so help me!!!! Insomnia is the root of every single case person I know in NA I obviously missed one so let's just say "every episode of Dr who plus every single College Football *usa* game in the last 50 years. I got a late start as my parents did not begin dragging me to "bowl" games until age 8 months LOL TY for the list. You re quite gifted at *of* explaining dramatic themes of life juxtaposed w/ culture and external situations.
Thanks for the suggestions and the kind words! I’ve seen almost all of Dr Who and all of Broadchurch as well as some of the others you listed. Solid suggestions 👌
Very happy to have viewed a few videos yesterday while recovering. Any p-earls of wisdom relating to the intersection of stoicism and humanism? TY
I will definitely make some videos on that topic in the future. Thanks for your support 👍
Just watched a video from your channel and am taken with the application of philosophy to translate art into a life of greater meaning. As I am recovering from a nasty ear infection today I can't wait to dive into distraction.
That’s very kind of you to say. And I’m very happy for you to use my channel as a distraction 😄 Get well soon 😊
Im very surprised you didn't mention Train Spotting It covers a whole range of human emotions stemming from drug addiction and sustaining a habit to how it effects others Very dark and hyper realistic, especially for its age
Yeah it crossed my mind and in the end, I went with Requiem For a Dream which for the most part is interchangeable. Train Spotting is a solid option though and could have easily been included. You’ve also reminded me to rewatch it as it’s been a long time 👍
Schindlers list - let's not kid ourselves
It might seem like an extreme example but it’s also one of the most important for the reasons mentioned in the video. Most people reduce humans down into good and evil but in reality, anyone is capable of doing terrible things in a certain environment and this has happened throughout history
Nice Video Dan! Really interesting 👌
Thanks man! Much appreciated
If you add chapters to your video, you'll get a stronger 'bump' mark at each movie, and can you that to see which one was interesting to the most people and make a deep dive video on that one. I really liked Whiplash. An old girlfriend of mine complained of a D1 volleyball coach that ruined her love for the sport. The coach sounded like a traumatized child, but after watching Whiplash I realized holy crap her coach was like the jazz teacher. I never imagined that type of type of teacher existed, pushing students to the breaking point to try and make them the best. Completely changed the way I look at that situation.
Thanks man! I add them sometimes but occasionally leave them out in some situations where the context might be lost but maybe I should add them regardless. And yeah, it’s always an interesting ethical question. The discipline and push makes winning more likely in some cases but is it worth the cost when you don’t enjoy the process? 🤷♂️
@@dmorgan There's always infinite things we could do, cant get bogged down. For videos with lists I think it pays off big, so I try to add it on those ones.
Religion has been part of history, but surely not a fundamental part? I'm sure people could have somehow managed without it. Today, it is simply an evil, intolerant, and vindictive cult. I strongly disagree with your comparisons. 🇦🇺🇦🇺
Too many problems with this presentation to go into detail. That statement, "Religions have stood the test of time", is meaningless. All it says is, if it's old it must be good. All mythologies (religions) have broad features in common- 1. History. Stories of how we came to be here. Mostly fiction with small pieces of actual history. 2. Sociology. Stories that tell us how to behave with each other to produce a functioning society. 3. Psychology. Stories about how to think about ourselves so that we can feel good about our life. 4. Mystery. Stories that tell us how to regard the mystery of life and death. Ancient stories placed the authority for these stories in some god or gods who would save us from ourselves. In the modern world we have started to realise that only we can save us from ourselves.
I never said that all old things are good. I’m very glad that many old traditions including religious ones exist no longer (such as the idea of human ceremonial sacrifice). The point I’m trying to make is that you can see evidence of religion throughout our history and therefore it tells us something about our nature. You can extract different takeaways from this. Atheists often say that it’s that people have a desire to be controlled or lack the critical thinking to see beyond religion. But a less harsh conclusion is that societies typically need structure in order to thrive. Religion offers a moral code, existential meaning and a sense of community. It’s hard to say for sure if religion is a net positive and I suspect that varies by individual faith. Take Buddhism as one example. It contains much wisdom about the need for guardrails and that you need to be careful when it comes to desire among other things. When a religion survives for so long, it’s usually either because of its memetic qualities or societal benefits.
@@dmorgan We are a social species. We are predisposed to look for ways to cooperate. Religions describe the moral codes of the people where the religion was invented. In the past religions have served a political purpose. This influence is fading in most developed countries, the US is currently an exception. Studies show that social dysfunction is directly corelated to level of religiosity in a society. A point you overlooked. I don't know what "Atheists often say" with regard to being controlled and critical thinking. However, in order to accept the god claims of religions one must suspend critical thinking. Most religions regard this suspension of critical thinking as a virtue. I see that as a problem as it allows the religion to acquire an authority it does not deserve. For example, choose any Christian apologist and notice that all they present in favour of their cause is bad arguments. Notice the number of adherents who use these bad arguments as a basis to make political choices that affect the wider community adversely. Religions survive based on wealth and power gleaned from duping the gullible.
Some very good points but it doesn’t include the religious intellectuals who clearly don’t suspend critical thinking. Some notable examples I’ve come across is on the Alex O’Connor’s podcast with both Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro. Both of those justify religion in a different way but make very strong cases nonetheless. It is true that the vast majority of people don’t analyse their faith on that level and you could say they suspend critical thinking. But it’s a well known phenomenon that people look towards mentors, elders and role models both for their opinions and their information. Technically speaking, all it takes is one person to make a logically irrefutable case for religion to justify everyone else’s proclivity towards that faith. Most people don’t understand the specifics of gravity but they trust that it just works and that smarter people understand it well enough to engineer around it. Being religious definitely doesn’t make you immune to any of the pitfalls of humanity. It doesn’t make you a good engineer, politician or even a better person. But as a whole, depending on how you define religion, it can offer some profound benefits, both individually and collectively as evident by those who come through atrocity or even addiction. At the very least, having faith towards optimism or that making the hard but necessary sacrifice of effort is worthwhile can be the difference between fulfilment and misery.
@@dmorgan I read as far as you suggesting that Jordan Peterson makes a strong case justifying religion. Did you actually listen to Jordan Peterson? Peterson does not make one single valid point with regard to God and religion. I also note that Shapiro only gets away with the rubbish he spouts because he talks fast. Technically speaking or not, no one has ever made a logically irrefutable case for religion. Gravity works whether you understand it or not! Your argument is, "religion can offer some profound benefits". That is the ethics of end justifies the means. If you lived in an authoritarian state that required you to persecute a certain segment of society, persecuting that segment could offer you some profound benefits. Try critical thinking instead of using apologist arguments.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve disagreed with many religious perspectives including that of Peterson and Shapiro as I’m not personally religious. But I try to go in with an open mind and the 2 episodes I mentioned make a compelling case for their respective religions. Of course, that doesn’t mean that everyone else justifies their faith in the same way. I disagree with your analysis of Peterson and Shapiro as a whole though. I can find areas that doesn’t resonate with me as well as areas of scepticism but to claim they don’t make a single valid point or that talking fast masks over the lack of reason is very reductive imo. Both are extremely smart and Shapiro’s vocal dexterity is a side effect of verbal fluidity and intelligence, not psychological manipulation or training. The truth is that remaining impartial when it comes to religion is very difficult and most people see what they want to see. If you’re an atheist then it’s easy to cherry pick weak arguments or a lack of evidence as proof that god isn’t real or crimes by religious people as proof that religion is inherently immoral. But like most things, it’s much more nuanced than that which is why I can’t definitively give you an answer on whether religion is a net positive or not. But what most religions have figured out is a set of core principles that seem to be very important. 1) Sacrifice effort now or resist the temptation of your desires today for a better tomorrow. 2) The importance of community. 3) Stable societies need structure even if it doesn’t benefit everyone (total freedom is impossible)
Cz science and knowledge can not be religion either
"religion is regarded by the simple as true, by the wise as false, and by the powerful as useful." - Seneca #religionisacon
Religion does more harm than good. Judeo-christian "morality" is horrifying! The Ten Commandments detail how to appease a narcissistic abuser, 1-4, but never even mention child abuse, r*pe, or slavery, The death toll from centuries of wars for "god and country" is staggering. If god is all powerful, then that is totally on him. Would any father allow his child to massacre all his other children?! That sense of "community" is a tribalism that creates an "in-group" and "out-group." Then it becomes easier to dehumanize and demonize the out-group. It's a childish "us v them" mindset. Damaging to human progress. Religions do not survive the test of time. Gods become names for planets, cars, days of the week, etc.😂
That’s debatable and I don’t think it’s obvious. It also depends how you define the religion. Take the Judeo-christian examples. Sure you could say that many people have died and fought over these religions but I’d argue that’s more about tribalism than anything else. You only have to go on any social media site to see tribalism at play (Trump vs Biden, Israel-Palestine, left vs right, etc). Left unchecked, tribalism can very easy descend into wars and chaos. But it’s not really at the heart of the religious philosophy. Christianity for example, based around the ideas and teachings of Jesus, would never advocate for such things yet it still happens in ‘the name of christianity’. I say this not as a religious person btw and it’s very hard to confidently say whether these religions are necessary or even a net positive/negative. Many famous atheists however are starting to recognise that removing religion from society has not had the effect they were hoping for.
@@dmorgan Jesus says in Matthew chapter 10 verses 34-39 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set[j] a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it." 💔🤍💙 White evangelicals in the usa are destroying their own families right now for their Marmalade Messiah, D Trump. #Hypocrisy #idolatry.
