SMB3 Level Design Contest #1 Order is reverse because thats how movavi decided to import the videos. my top5 levels: 1. Holy Cow. I loved this game as a kid! ...I never knew you could just jump to the boots. We would always push the block on the goblins head and ride him to the conveyor belt and die multiple times in the process. Definitely need to dig this one out and try these new "advanced strats"!

what are your PC settings?
I didn't change any pcsx2 settings, other than enable "FPU multiply hack" in the manual game-specif fixes/hacks. On gsdx settings I changed internal resolution to 4x native, texture filtering to "nearest". My PC specs are ryzen 5 3600, 32gb ram, gtx 1660ti

Apparently its automatic level, as in you hold right, and it plays itself, I learned that after I played and reviewed it, though there is no way to know that just from playing the level blindly, so I feel that's a very biased and unfair, as the level is as generic as it gets without that gimmick(so it shouldn't get full score IMO), and I really dont see how anyone can figure that out without anyone telling it.. And even then theres a bunch of mario maker levels with same idea/gimmick so its nothing new.

if I were to get one dollar for checking every pipe during my playthrough of all these levels, I'd be a millionaire. and I still wouldn't be done playing through all levels submitted even after an year. Triple the amount for getting all yoshi coins and moons and secret exits.

I'm guessing you didn't figure out why "Why Be Right?" is named that way. Also, that level has 2 exits. Are you only showing just one exit for each level?
One exit only, hunting for all optional stuff would have taken me way too long time(theres 124 entries/levels, so..)

WTC = when they cry(Higurashi is when they cry 1, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is when they cry 2), which is visual novel(and also has manga and anime adaptions). The red text is an umineko reference(when they cry 3 and 4, which has also manga adaption). The TL;DR explanation for red text that its the red truth, whatever said in red is the truth. the red truth is used (and the main premise for umineko) in battle between Humans and Witches where human side argues the murders were done by human/human methods while witches argue they were done by magic. If you wanna know more then read the VN.

Yes I dare, NSMBW is highly overrated. It has super wide and boring level design because the forced four players at same time gimmick which makes single player experience bad. It also started the soulless mario trend where everything these days looks the same, especially the 2D mario games.

-Design: 40 Points -How well-designed is the level? Is it overall fun to play? How well does it execute its theme, gimmicks and level setups? Is the difficulty consistent or is it frustrating or boring? Does the level function properly or are there issues such as unintended slowdown? -Creativity: 20 Points -Does the level present any unique or interesting ideas using SMW’s resources? Does it have any original, nice setups? Is the theme/gimmick innovative? -Enjoyment -How much I personally enjoyed going through the level
@@jokuemt I more mean that as in I want to know what you actually value in stage design. Give me some examples of what you consider creative or well designed levels, preferably not from this specific contest.
@@horushours9443 Sorry for late reply, youtube's notifications sucks ass. So to me the important parts of level design is how well does the level flow, does it have specif theme or gimmick, how well that is executed, how well are the setups done with the theme/gimmick/sprites. Secondary are length and difficulty, good level is 2-4 minutes long, starts easy and introduces the gimmick/theme and from there on ramps up with more challenging and unique setups from each other. The main problem is that a lot of these levels that they are just basic mario levels where you can just mindlessly hold right and occasionally jump over enemies and pits, theres nothing creative about that since its the bare minimum for an mario level we have seen million times already, so thats instant 0 in creativity from me, especially since levels are competing with each other. Second problem is how creators try to make their level long so they can have more fame or something, but this also fails quickly since I can immanently tell when part of the level is just filter, and these filters always gets repetitive, and because this is vanilla contest the level becomes too hard as if you die you have to replay a lot of the level, hence me using save-states in lot of these levels. And also there are many levels that feels like creator had no idea what to do with their level so they end up with level thats clearly 2-4 separate levels put together, and none of them being particularly interesting since there is no consisted theme or gimmick. Third problem is when there is hint of idea/theme/gimmick behind the level, but the creator hasn't gotten down what makes good level good, or how to make level based on ONE gimmick/sprite and make setups based on that, so the setups never get more challenging or unique or the gimmick is used twice at best and rest of the level becomes filter and basic mario level. So for an example lets use VALLEY OF BOWSER 3 from the original mario world: The level uses two sprites for its gimmick and setups, the timed carrot platforms and para-koopas. The level starts with safe, flat area to introduces jumping para-koopas to get you see how they work. Now then you are introduced to the timed platforms in safe area and the main idea of the level, where you dont fall down to pit and die if you ride on them for too long, and you are rewarded with coins if you jump off to next timed platform. Then the difficulty ramps up, now there is no floor, but to compensate that you have bunch of timed platforms to jump from to, and because there are multiple, and because you are not forced to wait full four seconds on each to reach next one, the level flows well and more skilled players can jump straight to next area, where the difficulty ramps up as there is less platforms and more obstacles and so on. See? There is clear theme, clear gimmick, clear use of set sprites, makes good use of said sprites and it flows well, there is no unnecessary waiting, the level gets progressively harder as it goes on, it has an midway point, it has multiple powerups and its only 12 screens long... If it was original level submitted to this contest it would have gotten just about perfect score from me. For example levels I liked from this contest that are good examples of good levels are "fuzzy drink"(in part 4) which executed its setups well and has clear theme but doesn't rely on glitch/bugs/unintended behavior. "Racid conduit"(also in part 4) has unique idea, its non-linear level which is rare in this contest. "musical sci-fi" (in part 9) is good example with level that uses glitch/unintended behavior for unique gimmick and for most part makes good use of it as the level goes on. "french twost" (in part 3) is good example of basic straightforward level that has some spice to it, but doesn't quite stand out. Despise me giving it low score doesn't mean I didn't like it or that its bad level, its good level but it really doesn't stand out from the other, more interesting levels.
