I found THE BEST way to kill the WEEDS on my Allotment- NO DIG GARDENING Beginner
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.Месяц назад
In this episode - i cleared away the remaining weeds on my allotment plot & then started to lay down the weed suppressant membrane which will hopefully rot down the remainder of the weeds underneath. I also spent WAY too much time splitting wood to then hold the sheet down incase of strong winds.

    Oh, and please don't contribute to our global platic and microplastic contamination problem. There really is no need for sheet plastic 😢 Cardboard will smother weeds if you feel thats needed, its free, and the worms LOVE it, bringing more fertility to your plot, as will chop & drop, also adding fertility. There are some great videos about composting in the paths between beds also. Those nettles are gold. Thanks for sharing your journey and being open to us garden nuts. 😂

    What are you doing darling? Pallet compost bins dont need a top or bottom, which you still seem to be building after just stating that you understand not needing a bottom 🤷🏻‍♀️ Those three pallets should all be standing on edge making a cube. It looks like you just built the same box, with a floor, over again 😅 You can make a door, but you don't want a solid wall on the front as it will make you miserable trying to turn the compost and or retrieve the finished compost from the bottom. A tarp can be thrown over the top in the rainy season to prevent over saturation (you could make a lid/top, But be sure you can easily move it out of your way). Having the compost directly on the ground allows for all the microorganisms and worms to move freely in and out, this being necessary for efficient composting, they do the work 🙃 Blessings and support 🙏🏻

  • @Equinella2
    @Equinella2 2 дня назад

    Who told you to build a 'floor' on your compost bin? The compost needs to be in contact with the soil so the worms and microorganisms can move in and break down your organic 'waste'. Worms can't jump through air 🙃 All that life from the soil is what does the composting! 🙏🏻 Get rid of the 'floor' love.

    Hi. The plastic weed sheeting that previous gardeners put down has been a nightmare in our community garden for several reasons. It breaks down eventually and shreds and bits of micro plastic go into the soil everwhere. Over time, weeds grow on it anyhow ifyou add wood chips because they build soil. Some grasses grow underneath it, eg couch grass, and grow into the weave. It has been an environmental hazard which is difficult to fix.

    Definitely no manure on the membrane (big no no). Leave the plastic on until the spring. Then take it up and replace it with cardboard and put at least 100mm of compost/well rotted manure straight on top of the cardboard. You can plant into it straight away. You will still get a few bits of bindweed, couch grass, ground elder or bramble that will survive but you can then just dig them up or keep pulling out the growth and eventually they will disappear. I did what you are doing at this time last year but with two or three applications of cardboard instead of plastic and I now have maybe a dozen stubborn bits of bindweed and ground elder that keeping poking up but one by one they are being eradicated. Keep at it because the hard work is well worth it when you pick your first perfectly formed calabrese head.

    • @TheAllotmentNoob

  • @g.y.o5419
    @g.y.o5419 Месяц назад

    Dont spread manure on top of the membrane, it will pin the fabric to the ground over an area and couch grass will 100% grow through the fabric and into the manure. The pallet and chopped wood you have put to hold the fabric down, you will most likely get a few weeds grow around the edges of that, but they will pull out easily enough. It will take time for the weeds underneath to die off, but it's the right way to go. Well done on the progress so far :)

    Take the complete top of the liquid container, but when pouring it make sure the thin side is flat and not upright and pour, the air will enter the top part and the fluid will come out the bottom without gulping. So as you held it upright so just turn it 90 degrees when pouring. Hope you know what I mean.

    If you're worried about cancer, then I definitely wouldn't be sticking Vaseline in your nose. Sure, it might stop pollen getting into your lungs, but on flipside you're allowing petroleum jelly to seep in instead.... literally a byproduct of carcinogenic oil distillation processing. Whilst their is little direct proof of Vaseline causing cancer, its highly likely to cause pneumonia☹- Think about it, if it stops moisture and foreign objects getting in, then it will also stop the natural processes of getting moisture from the air out of your lungs. At the end of the day, it is made from known cancer creating substance, so why take the risk... Consider natural alternatives if possible 😊

    You don't need a compost bin or even a compost heap - look up no dig and also chop-and-drop for methods closer to nature. Yes you maybe see more slugs but then the same methods attract more hedgehogs and frogs which eat the slugs.

    Welcome to the rather odd world of allotment gardening. See all those weeds? They're FOOD for next year's crops. Join four pallets together, line with two layers of cardboard boxes & stuff EVERYTHING in, seeds & all. In 8-10 months, you'll have compost. Chainsaw oil is NOT 2 stroke oil! It's for lubricating the chain!
