Sorry to hear this, I was the designer of the 10" Classic Dobsonian and XT 4.5 telescopes. It was very gratifying to see the 10 inch used by public observatories such as the Visitor Center on Mauna Kea and at Chabot College. Sorry for the staff. The bigger puzzle is what happened to Meade.
how to do with iphone
So I’ll never be able to get the 10” Dob replacement mirror I need. Oh well…. maybe I can get the existing one re-coated somewhere
It Sure looks like the END OF A Hack saw , The part that holds the saw on the Hack saw 🤔
I would imagine a "WARN" notice would be triggered if they were going to shut down completely I don't know how many employees they had but I'm guessing it was more than 100 (which would be needed to require a WARN notice) If that's the case...........people working there certainly knew
Meade's website is still up. Is anybody home there?
Cool! I was able to see it. Thanks for making another great video :)
Wow glad I had ordered my Skywatcher 400P instead of the Orion xx16g back at the end of Aug when I was looking to upgrade. Like you mentioned I feel sorry for the employees and their families hopefully they were able to find new work. The company should have at least had the decency to ship back everyones equipment before they closed doors.
Almost succeeded. Occasionally got three moons! One in the centre and others left and right. I know it SHOULD work, but my eyes start to water, I blink, and it’s game over.
im 60 years old and this is the first ive heard of a 16 inch record album
I assume the “focus breathing” in your video is due using auto focus. It’s a bit distracting. Your video has plenty of depth of field, so setting manual focus would keep your framing from jumping to and fro. Thank you for your info. Assuming undelivered scopes were purchased with credit cards, the purchaser can go through their CC company and get their money back due to seller fraud.
Cute cow cat!🤍🖤
Sad story about Orion. I got an amazing deal on an Orion SkyView Pro 8 EQ, because the seller didn't offer shipping so I got it picked up and shipped by a UPS Store. Any suggestions on upgrades? Such as a better 2-speed 2" focuser?
Wow! After watching this video I know exactly how I am going to do my telescope! PAINT IT! Flock that flocking tape crap. No flocking way!
The job may even be easier than that. I've had several people say that you only need to flock the area of the tube visible from the focuser tube.
Wow I have a meade 70mm spotting scope and an orion 8" Newtonian which I do need a part for. Guess I'll have to go to a machine shop and have it made. Would have been nice for a warning so people could make purchases. The china made junk has put just about everything out of business. Another fail from trump who said he was keeping manufacturing jobs in america.
Check out Skywatcher. They shared a lot of models and parts with Orion. I've bought a few spare parts for my Orion from Skywatcher (they have great customer service).
Very interesting. Thank you for making such fun 3D viewing experience possible and explaining everything so well!
Thank YOU for watching!
I couldn’t see the third image of the Moon. It might have something to do with the fact that I’m blind in one eye 😂
Well, thank you for watching the video. I very much appreciate it. :)
I see two (@)(@)😂
this appears to be very close to my Nexus pro DSC in terms of functionality, and without encoders. My guess is the alignment is not as robust as a conventional DSC, but it looks pretty cool, might have to give it a try.
Dogs use a similar technique to identify the direction of a sound. It's why they tilt their heads while listening. Sorry but the the thumb technique didn't work for me. But neither do 3-D glasses, so maybe it's not possible for me.
That's interesting - I didn't know that about dogs.
I worked for Orion for 12 years from 1990 to 2002 . if I could talk to you off the record I might get in hot water to actually give the story from my POV. I designed all the covers, softcases and dew shields and other acessories for Orion until recent shut down without notice...
Feel free to send me an email at: JJ Dreese @ yahoo dot com (without the spaces).
Bizarre is an understatement When I worked for Orion n the 90s part of my job was to deal with venders .The worst by far to deal with was Meade . I know the were liars and scumbags .. I remember a meeting with Tim was so pissed he canceled all business with Meade and sold of the remaining scopes . Tim ghosted Meade completely. I see it as a big mistake for the new owners got involved with Meade and the drowning Gorilla took Orion down with it .. Orion was never a manufacturer .. The Chinese built all their stuff that was their Achilles he Eventually did a go around and started selling the same scopes they made for Orion with their own label a lot cheaper. It got real ugly with anti trust action and lawsuits . Celestron hated Meade from the beginning because Meade totally rip off the original SCT design im the 70s .. on and on now the Chinese rule the roost 👽 Celestron ..yet they were jbought out by Taiwan as well a couple years ago Orion didn’t know what it was they were getting into …trying to run a manufacturing concern in Tiajuana …no experience in labor materials handing ,shipping, Mexican Gov. etc ,.. they screwed the pooch This explains why 2/3 of my income unexplained disappeared last year and this …good thing they stopped ordering , last fall …bankrupt court no thanks..to J who had my back..Bad juju Orion again.. I got lucky.. we made 100s of carry bags for the Starblast on the table..for years but dint order as usual fall 23 ,sort of got a clue .. so I would have been owed $1000s by Orion, thank my lucky stars
you email doesn't work

It just occurred to me that last night I captured a reasonably clean time lapse of the eclipse. The start and finish frames are about 4 hours apart. If I edit out the az-el field rotation I might be able to get this to work
You should give it a try!
Cool! I can see it. Nice video, thanks.
That was fun! The thumb trick really works although the image only lasts a moment for me. Maybe with some practice…
I'm glad it worked for you. I can keep it for about ten seconds.
so i just recently got a new scope and moved from .965 eye pieces to 1.25 and i kind of wish i saw this before i started collecting more eye pieces then i have in 45 years. so tonight there was a partial lunar eclipse and i was checking it out and just for fun i dropped in the svbony cross hair eye piece to see what it actually looked like using it for something other then setting up my scope and i was flabbergasted with what i saw its a 20 mm 70 degree view. im gonna have to get a couple more like that.
Congrats on the move from 0.965 inch to 1.25 inch. The 0.965 inch was common prior to the mid-1980's and was a common size for starter telescopes. You'll find that the world opens up when you jump to the common 1.25 inch standard. These SVBony 66 degree eyepieces are fantastic - the best bargain set for the price. The next step is to start buying Explore Scientific eyepieces that have the 82 degree field of view. They sometimes show up used on eBay and the classified section on Cloudy Nights. I personally find them better than Tele Vue, but I'm in the minority on that opinion.
I have very good eyesight, but when I do the cross-eye trick the middle image is just a bright blurred circular disc with color fringes around the edges. Any tips on how to retain sharpness?
I've found it helps to view it on a smaller screen like a phone or in a small laptop screen.
If there was still inventory why not sell it? It may actually be a requirement of the creditors.🧐
Hah, that's wild. I can see the 3d effect though.
Excellent examples and explanations, John! Congratulations! The problem with these aigrettes masks or curved vanes is that they spread the diffraction pattern all over the field. In practice it is as if they make the spikes to "disappear", but it is not so, the diffraction pattern is spread all over the field. This is clearly seen at minute 10:41 when you compare the actual "spikeless" image on the left with the four spike image on the right. The one without spikes seems to have a bigger fuzzy disc when compared to the one with 4 spikes. The spread do to the secondary mirror now has an additional halo around. Sure, some people will prefer the spikeless images with bigger fuzzy diameter and others (like me) will prefer the four spike image with a smaller fuzzy diameter. But there's an important point here: let's say we are chasing a double star with a very bright main star and a smaller companion. For example Sirus A and B. Currently they are separated by 11 arc seconds but the difference in magnitudes is great, -1,47 for Sirius A (primary) and +8,5 for Sirus B (companion). Guess what, probably in the situation you are using a aigrettes, the bigger bright halo around A will engulf the B component. If no aigrettes were used, probably you may be able to see Sirius B. That's why I prefer the 4 spíkes. They give the most clear picture with less diffraction dispersion and the star disc is sufficiently smaller to allow finding the companion of a double system. Same things happens in a more dramatic way in refractors (no spikes) with the Airy's disc diameter and the first illuminated ring. They are inversely proportional to the diameter. So the bigger the lens, the smaller the Airy's disc diameter and the first ring. Good to get tight doubles with very different magnitudes!
Any scope manually controlled will hold its value quite well, anything with electronics on board will be worth scrap value in no time!. It would probably be wise to sell now if you have a smart scope in any shape or form...
Motors will be the big killers.
Wow!! I see 3D with red and blue 3D cardboard glasses. Just kidding. 😊 Very interested about real 3D.
Haha, I'd like to try the red/blue method, but that is beyond my talents.
@@reflactorha ha ha
I can see it.
It's fun. Anybody can take these 3D moon photos.
@@reflactor so the way I understand it, you are counting on lunar libration to rotate the view of the Moon between 2 identical phases, yes?
Right. It's a matter of "how much". Over the span of time required (few hours) to get the slight view change, the shadow terminator does move a little bit (you can see it in my two photos where one shows a crater and the other doesn't).
Might work well using Cardboard if you get the image spacing just right.
That's a really good idea!
I tried many times and it doesn't work. I'm angry now 😡
Does the middle image show up when you move your thumb toward your nose?
@@reflactorYes it did. But then it fades away and I see 2. I have a headache for trying many times. Where exactly should I hold my thumb first? in the middle of the 2 moons? or over one? How far back/close to my nose should I pull my thumb until the 3d moon appears?
I hold my thumb in between. Then focus on my thumb as I pull it toward my nose. Eventually, a middle image starts to converge and I keep moving my thumb until the middle image converges. Once that happens, withdraw your thumb from the view and try to continue looking at the middle image.
@@reflactor Thank you. I'll try again
Cool 3D Effect! Thanks!
Glad to hear it!
Yes. Seen it. Cool…😎
Great news!
There are two ways of seeing a 3D image on a computer screen, parallel view and cross view. The method you used in this video was the parallel view, in which the right image is on the right and the left is on the left, but that can create eye strain when the images are large and seen on a desktop computer. This is because your eyes are attempting to view two images that are wider apart than their eyes and human eyes are not able to move outward away from each other. The cross view method is better for large images, in which case (as the name implies) the images are switched right to left and left to right. The viewer crosses their eyes until they see 3 images and then focus on the one in the center. In that case, the right eye is viewing the image on the left and the left eye is viewing the one on the right. That method works better because human eyes routinely "cross" when viewing objects close to us, so the muscles aren't doing anything unusual. The cross view method is difficult for some people to learn but there's a trick you can use that makes it easier. Place your hands on either side of your eyes like blinders and cup your hands until the your right eye can only see the image on the left (the right view) and the image on the left eye can only see the image on the right (the left view). This makes it almost impossible not to easily see the 3D effect. Also, there are companies that make mirrored viewers you look through like binoculars for watching stereo movies and photos in the parallel view on your computer screen. So if you're into this 3D stereo thing as a hobby, there are a number of methods and tools.
Very helpful. Thank you!
thanks John lots great fun info
