    I've seen this type of Thyssen escalator before in John Lewis in Bluewater Shopping Centre, Kent. Those ones were built in the mid-late 1990's. There's also some Kone escalators to the basement level which were added later on, and all the Thyssens have been lightly modernised by Kone as well.

  • @KLEF710

    The satellite 3 gates at Stansted has some travelators which I believe are also the RSV type from around the same time. There used to also be Kone and a few O&K escalators, but all but 1 have been replaced by Jackson now. The only original Kone escalator is the one down to gates 51 to 59, and there's a closed off O&K escalator on the arrivals side leading up from a no-longer-used bus drop off point close to the terminal, which I'm guessing is the RT-HDLS type like most the other O&Ks there. I don't know that the Kone escalators were, though they would have likely been RTV-HD-999G or ECO 3000 E3X.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 3 дня назад

      @@KLEF710 I knew of those ones, but haven’t used the arrivals travelator for years! It’s rare I enter from that gate… That bit was all done in 2001. With 4 Kone escalators (RTV-HD-999G), the travelator in departures (RSV-HD-G-AF - though identical to an A3X) and the one underneath the actual gate building in arrivals. I also know of that shut off old RT-HDLS you mention from the old bus drop off. They’ve frosted over the glass in the last couple of years on that door so it’s no longer visible… The 3/4 Kone ones were replaced in 2021, when companies were throwing out rock bottom bids to survive after the Covid period. Unfortunately, Stansted fell for the rubbish that they’d have been told about them needing renewal and replaced them with a really inferior product. The ones in that hub are a very low quality version compared to the other Jacksons used up from the train station one side, and the original Kone at the 50-59 gates runs beautifully! I always go from Gatwick (or if reasonably priced Heathrow) as they are both much better for escalators and travelators. Gatwick, for example in the much busier South Terminal arrivals hall on the right hand side keeps the older escalators (1999 RTV-HD-999G types) running perfectly. I’ve never seen either broken. That said since Otis took over maintenance a lot more breakdowns seem to happen there - particularly on TransitMaster products! 🙂

      They’ve been lightly modded (with direction indicators and the lcd screens) though it was by one of the smaller ‘generic’ companies. They did a decent job though as they run like original. There’s 2 more here that are original - there’s another shop unit in the basement (unfortunately it closed so they were out of use at the time) but when I visited in 2021 they were all still original 🙂

    Just curious, have you filmed the down escalators from the arrivals level to the transit yet? Those are O&K RT-HDLS as well. One of them has a really loud motor and they have energy saving mode and they sound very nice when changing between modes.

    The coloured lights at the ends are a nice feature. It makes the escalators look nice and colourful. These escalators have an unusual-looking design which I don't think I've ever seen on the RTV-HD99G/999G type, as the handrail ends appear to angle upwards, making it look slightly more like the standard RTV-TE type.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 15 дней назад

      @@KLEF710 They are nice with the lighting effect. They do that in a fair few different Paris stations with lots of types of escalators. They are a rare design indeed. But it’s because these ones were built in their French Factory and they were styled more like the CNIM escalators of the period which also had the same base design with rising handrail ends. Even their travelators did - I found an abandoned 2003 one with a rubber belt like that. The original escalators at the Gare St Lazare/Haussmann / Magenta and Gare Du Nord RER stations on that line were CNIM but looked like these ones (but with CNIM branding, running gear and comb plates). They were replaced in 2020 with the Otis ones I filmed.

    • @KLEF710
      @KLEF710 15 дней назад

      @EscalatorsAnywhere Interesting. I actually prefer this design to the ones built in the UK and Germany factories. It resembles the RTV-TE more which gives it more of a family feel. Looking on Google street view there seems to be a few of these in Gare Du Nord as well, as well as some ThyssenKrupp Tugela escalators and a few rare O&K Kone-branded RT-HDLS escalators there too. I don't know whether or not the O&K Kone ones are still there as the street view is from 2016.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 15 дней назад

      @ I really like the normal design too though - I think it’s very smart. Maybe this should’ve been the 99G (as seen here) and the 999G took the more usual appearance. That way to have the option would be nice. 👍 Sadly, they’re all gone. Gare du Nord is the busiest one there and everything was replaced just before the Olympics. I did however film some 1993 O&K Kone branded RT-HDLS’s at Marne La Valley Chessey (Disneyland) station.

  • @KLEF710
    @KLEF710 19 дней назад

    I've been to Hatfield and Welwyn and they are far more interesting for escalators. Stevenage isn't particularly interesting apart from these travelators which are very nice. Hatfield Galleria Shopping Centre has some really nice late 80s/early 90s Thyssen escalators which interestingly start about a metre above the floor because the shopping centre was built right above the A1(M) motorway and there wasn't enough space for an escalator pit on floor level. Welwyn's main shopping centre has similar escalators as well, and John Lewis has some 2000s Otis escalators. There's some rare but lightly modded early 80s O&K RT-LS escalators in Harlow as well. There was a video of one of them on youtube but it appears to have been deleted.

  • @KLEF710

    These escalators are nice. Schindler seem to have gone for their more heavy duty type here, rather than the 9300 type which would usually be installed in department stores/shopping centres. I assume this store is very busy with a lot of traffic using the escalators to change floors, so Schindler decided to install a more robust escalator.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere

      @@KLEF710 On the face of it they look more heavy duty, but according to the serial plates they’re just 9300AEs - it surprised me. These escalators were completely hoarded off recently, and it looks like the upper set are about to be replaced or refurbished. The lower set are still intact but switched off while works are done on the upper set as these were modernised a couple of years ago and one was broken for a while due to it requiring major mechanical works, but the upper set have been stripped of their steps and panels and there's now a gantry above these ones so it's even more likely they're being completely replaced. While it is sad to see some nice O&Ks go, especially as the remaining RT-HDLS escalators in satellites 1 and 2 will likely be going once the transit system closes as part of the expansion works, these are over 30 years old and were very heavily used, and were quite unreliable.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere 23 дня назад

      Yeah to be honest they’re at the end of their working lives. It’s a very busy station, with exposure to the cold as it’s not fully enclosed and for most of their lives they’d been left running most of the time - the ones the other end get left on all night. Unfortunately when anything is modernised even lightly the reliability drops, so replacing can be better if a good product is chosen… When I was in Rotterdam recently I went on all of the newer (2013/14) Kone TM140 escalators. They were much better than I thought they would be. If they installed a set of those, it would be a good choice. 🙂

      @@EscalatorsAnywhere Kone TransitMaster 140s (or maybe even 120s) would be good here. I don't know much about what's going on there though, or even if they're actually being replaced. I haven't seen any signs of major lift and escalator companies doing works here yet. The escalator in the gates 90 to 93 building recently had a modernisation, though the works were less extensive than the works being done on this set, and only seemed to involve mechanical and running gear upgrades and step replacement.

    Did Marryat & Scott installed this escalator?

      @EscalatorsAnywhere 27 дней назад

      @@idl3k_elev To be honest I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think so. I believe M&S dealt with Thyssen directly as they’re a major retailer and had a large number of orders over a long time (none of theirs had the typical ‘Thyssen-Marryat Scott’ branding on back in the day) even though they were the same types that other places were getting distributed via Marryat Scott. I’ll try and find a couple more of these to upload soon… 🙂

    Thought this model was called 506 SL instead (& that 506 had a different handrail inlet design)

      @EscalatorsAnywhere 28 дней назад

      @@lzh4950 The more modern day ones (from 1994 to fairly recently) according to their website back in the day were called the 506 NCE. I believe that was to signify the change from these ones. They now appear to be being called the Otis Link these days on the most recent serial plates. 🙂

      @EscalatorsAnywhere In my part of the country there's also the similar-looking XO-508 (maybe it's the China-made version)

    • @idl3k_elev
      @idl3k_elev 21 день назад

      From what I've heard, 506 SL is the lightweight version of 506 and the "SL" code means "Slimlime", probably reflecting its lightweight nature. And yes, the current modern day OTIS escalators for most markets are now called LINK. The China made LINK type is a successor of OTIS XO-508 (a product of Xizi Otis and later OTIS Electric).

    Lovely old escalator. This store is closing down soon so it's a good thing you filmed it when you did. The handrail ends on this model of escalator look very similar to those on the O&K RT-LS type from around the same time period.

      I actually didn’t realise until you said, but looking at news articles it closed yesterday. I was lucky to get here then - was a while ago… I have plans to visit a couple more places this week, and one of those has (well years ago it did) 2 more like this but with one side glass and the other like these, from 1974. If still there, I’ll do my best to film. 🙂

      @@250piccadilly9 Hi, did you see the video I already posted of the ones in the selfridges store? (There’s a link in this video’s description). While it wasn’t quite closing time, it was about 30 mins before and I went round all 8x escalators twice to get a good look and some fairly clear shots. Hope you enjoy 🙂

    The Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon is interesting for O&K escalators/travelators. It has some RTK-B escalators built in 1995. Those are interestingly listed as RTK-LB/KB according to a video I found which shows the serial plate. It also has some older RTKs built in 1984 so it is unusual for having both the earliest and the latest RTK/RTK-B escalators. There's lots of videos on RUclips by Skyline Gang Fan on the escalators there.

    • @EscalatorsAnywhere
      @EscalatorsAnywhere Месяц назад

      @@KLEF710 It’s odd that they actually produced the RTK-B style in 1995 still, perhaps as the mall was an existing customer. The RTK’s themselves first came along in 1983 in the known form but there was a crossover period between them and the RT-LS where some RT-LSs were branded as RTKs. Here are some more RTKLB types; ruclips.net/video/acBul1pyBvE/видео.htmlsi=6sF-OxCEFpeRDYaw It’s strange because in some malls, they have ones that looked identical but were listed as RTK-B still. The LB will be for the longer balustrades (like how on the RTVs you can have a RTV-TL or GL). 🙂

    I flew from Gatwick North Terminal recently, and despite it's age this escalator, as well as the 2 remaining RT-HDLS escalators landside and the O&K travelators from the Shuttle to the South Terminal, were still original and appeared to be going strong today. Also I spotted when arriving off a flight at one of the Pier 5 gates there was a Kone TransitMaster escalator and a Kone Monospace lift from the departures walkway above down to the boarding gate which I could easily see through a glass wall.
