A page to share videos about vehicle crash rescue and to look at techniques used around the world in video form so that we can all develop the way we work during extrication rescue from vehicle crash incidents. None of the videos have been prepared or altered in any way, they have been done in real time with some video speeded up to save viewer time. You will see some techniques work well and some don't go quite to plan. Please send in any videos you would like to see :)

Sometimes it can be useful to use the vehicle components to aid the extrication in certain areas, instead of using your equipment, especially if your inventory is limited. In this case we have used some door trim to cover the laminated edges of a windscreen after it has been cut out of a side resting vehicle. The alleviated the need to use lots of sheets and trying to get them to stay in place....

Wouldn't you put the relief cut through the bottom of the A pillar first, then tension ram, then top of A pillar?
Hi, many thanks for the comment. A good question. We used to teach that during training with a vehicle that had no damage, the relief cut also enabled the roll to happen on a non crash damaged vehicle. We have change our methodology, so we now teach to tension a ram first as that will support the dash, in most cases of heavy frontal deformation we are just pushing the components back to their original position, so a relief cut isn't always required for it to be effective. So in summary, we should support the dash prior to any relief cuts in the base of the A-pillar. This video was done a long time ago and things have developed since. I should redo a video :) Take care. Jon
Your basic air fuel explosion.
Building essentially acts as a carburetor mixing fuel and air until an explosive mixture is created and ignited by the flame inside
Mixture of combustible smoke and air in the building ignites resulting in rapid combustion, pushing out a ploom of combustible smoke which then mixed with outside air until fuel/air mixture was sufficient for rapid combustion/explosion
As a chemist, I can assure you you are 100% correct.

Fire: Excuse me.... must have been that couch I had for supper.
So what happens if no oxygen is ever introduced? Like, what would happen if a fire were perfectly sealed in some sort of vacuum?
The fire would eventually sizzle out if it were a true sealer room. Think back to the Fire triangle, for a fire it needs Heat, Fuel and Oxygen. If you have a room with a fire that is sealed from having no more oxygen to burn other than whats in the room, that fire will consume the oxygen and slowly fizzle out as it doesn't have one of the 3 key components to a fire. A great way to see this oxygen usage yourself, and a fun experiment, Get a plate or a bowl and put a layer of water in it, put a candle in the middle of the plate or bowl, with the wick lit, then put a drinking glass over the candle, so the water helps create a perfect seal from any new oxygen being introduced. You'll see the flame gradually get smaller, and the water be "pulled" into the glass.

Flashover is the exponential growth of heat/fire resulting from temperatures reaching sufficient levels to cause rapid degradation of flammable materials supplying fuel to a rapidly growing fire

What would the B plan have been whilst the car against the tree for a rapid extrication. Through the boot of the car or cut out the windscreen maybe?
Hi Richie, thanks for the comment. Yes great question. It will predominantly be situation led. In this case spot on mate. Both front and back would be the emergency plan if a rapid removal is needed. In this case we had rear access. The front would be a potential but access to creat a viable egress was limited.

Can I just ask, with the dash roll, what is the purpose of the initial cut to the A-post? Why not do the relief cut, take strain with spreaders and then cut the A-post? Thanks!
Hi, thank you for the comment. This was not a video to show the correct procedure for dash evolutions as such, it was part of a few videos introducing teams to the new equipment and how they can be used. The video briefly shows a dash lift not roll. You are correct, the norm would be in most cases to cut the A pillar last to maintain some form of structural integrity and to have a ram/spreaders in place to support the load. Which we have not demonstrated here. Thank you for the question, i hope that has helped.

What is your opinion on a relief cut above the wheel arch for a dash roll? Does it have any effect? Or more beneficial to use that cut on a dash lift?
Hi, thanks for the question. This technique seems to be pooping up in media more and more lately. It’s one of those techniques that can be very effective for some situations such as a frontal obstruction or a dash relocation where the front of the vehicle has under ridden a lorry or similar. Cutting the upper rail is ok if you have time and can get good access, on some vehicles the suspension transom/strut can be very close to the bulkhead which makes it difficult to get a full cut through. I have done it for both lift and roll and on the right vehicle it works really well, very effective. But is does take more time and you need to understand what you are trying to achieve before attempting it. Hope that helps 👊👍

This is why the truck crew doing ventilation coordinate with the nozzle crew inside because if ventilation is done wrong, backdrafts happen
Wrong, if you see the signs of a backdraft buidling up, ventilation will start the explosion. Cool down the hot gasses, prevent air from entering(oxygen) and STAY OUT !
why does this happens?
There are various different scripts on what and why a Backdraft happens. This might help answer your question. “A backdraught is where limited ventilation can lead to a fire in a compartment producing fire gases containing significant proportions of partial combustion products and unburnt pyrolysis products (pyrolysates). If these accumulate, the admission of air when an opening is made to the compartment can lead to a sudden deflagration. This deflagration moving through the compartment and out of the opening is a backdraught. The force of a backdraught has the potential to damage building elements resulting in an unstable structure”

Imagine if you just happened to open the door at exactly the right time and didn't know anything about backdrafts. You would be severely burned by that ball of flame that comes out. It's the firefighters nightmare. The other parallel hell for firefighters is Flash over.

Finally, someone in the UK making exactly the kind of videos I've been looking for for years. Excellent learning points and I especially appreciate it when it goes slightly wrong because it highlights many things otherwise that may go uncnsidered should you be fussed about only sharing the "perfect" technique. We all know in the real world their is no perfect technique but a constant process of trial and error with a few moments of inspired genius. Please do keep it up. As a retained firefighter I don't get anywhere near the amount for experience that I'd like from one weekly drill night but I love what I do, when I'm lucky enough to be able to do it. Again, thank you very much for sharing this - it's invaluable. Imagine doing one demo on station with 50k firefighters able to take advantage ... brilliant! =)
