REACTIVE rescue dog 1-2-1 session - how to overcome TRIGGERS!
feed me daddy
I see great benefits to Positive (R+) when shaping behaviours for trick training or even relationship building (look at me, get a treat … look at me, get a treat). This is the start of a conversation with your dog, not the entirety of it. The positive only folks discard the other approaches that, when used FAIRLY and CONSISTENTLY, absolutely enhance communication.
Facts! Kudos to you, self reflection is so important. I foster rescue dogs since 2010 and do exactly what you describe. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 Claudia
Let’s get started
It varies from a dog to dog. One size doesn’t fit all.
Let’s get started
for that last point, might i suggest a novel solution which would prevent all those issues with no effort: DOGS ARE OUTSIDE ONLY it's an animal. a pet. not a human. not a member of the family. it is property. always remember that and things will work out much better
Let's get started
Please make sure you don’t mess up like I did before I knew better 😢. I had mine (although he was only about 15 pounds or 8 kilos) on a flat collar and I thought he would stop pulling before he hurt himself. I later found out that he had collapsed trachea and every time we tried to walk after that he coughed (honked like a goose) miserably and became very winded. I had to switch him to a harness, which made him pull even harder, just to avoid further injury. Smaller breeds are more predisposed to get this, but I definitely sped it up unknowingly. He’s about 10 now and has just had TPLO surgery and will soon be getting it on the other hind leg, so retraining is maybe not in the cards for him. I will never make this mistake again with another dog. Luckily, we can use Martin collars, prong collars and e collars here in the states and I want a Doberman next, so pulling me around will not be an option with that size. For mine and my dog’s safety, I will do better and actually train my next one.
E collar was a complete game changer for my Dutch Shepard. Couldn’t have got her off lead in public without it. Enjoying your content. 👍👍
18-20 hours do NOT mean actual sleep only, but also resting/relaxation/calm chilling out/ sunbathing and so on. Only a fraction of that is actual sleep.
I agree, BUT please consider watching your training video of Fudge the 10-year-old Chihuahua again and double-check how much kibble a dog that size is allowed a day (e.g. up to 50g dry food, depending on the brand, in my case one fist full for a 4kg dog). I can guarantee you that in that video alone you fed him thrice the daily amount of dog food.
feed me daddy
"Dachs" means badger and is pronounced "ducks" (Queen's English). "Hund" means dog and is pronounced "hund" (Northern English accent). So there's no funny sh-sound in Dachshund. The majority of Germans calls the breed "Dackel", however, so it's probably easiest for you to use that instead (pronounced "duckle" in Queen's English)
I had my Rhodesian Ridgeback on a short leash from 8 weeks... Quick corrections at all times. He's so chill as an adult. Get a house line folks ! It's the way forward!
Makes sense 🥰
Why do you always say "all the way" after giving a down command to your other dog? I saw tom davis do that too, but i just say the command again or wait, cause dogs don't know what "ll the way" means right
Flexi leads are awesome, if you know how to use it, and teach your dog how to interact with it. Never hold the Stop button when your dog is coming towards you. Hold the stop button, Verbal cue, Pull and and release the stop button when your dog start to move towards you.
Dog seems very poorly socialised. And poorly handled by avoiding training with a motivator
Why are you tie-ing the dog up? I would always avoid that when interacting and training any dog.
My problem is my dog loves all my hair clients and wants to get their attention.
What do you do if you feed a raw diet?
Let's see you do that with a dumb af lhasa apso.
Did it just take you 10 min. to say its good to teach a dog what NO!... ? I'm actually very happy i thought my dog this from very early on. And piple are amazed how good he listens! It was from a video of your favorite dog trainer and youtuber... Zack George!😅 😂 only difference, he said the command: leave it🤷♂️ By the way? Why dont you like zack george? Every vide i see from you, you make clear that you disagree with him... What is "wrong" with his dog teachin? I watched some of his videos and adopted some things from him and its working. (But he is o.c. not my only source of information) high value treats are great, but not only them for 3 days straight. Sometimes just normal kibble, sometimes no reward... but if my dog makes something very good, i let him know with high value treat...
7:46 that sounds like a scary idea. Wouldn't a dog be tired or upset without regular meals? It almost sounds like you're starving your dog. Decades ago children would be punished by sending them to bed without their dinner, but I've heard this is really bad for their development, both physically and emotionally. Do you litterally hand feed your dog everything? Could that result in any other unwanted habits or behaviours? How do you ensure your dog has enough food / energy to behave normally, while also keeping most / all of their calories locked behind them performing in certain way?
Warning this is purely me talking about how proud I am of my puppy: I wish I knew not to introduce my puppy to ever other dog we meet. He’s my first pup and he’s 1 now, I have another who was 7 when I got her (now 13 going on 14) and she is poorly trained and very reactive. Both are small dogs but I wish I did things differently with the puppy. He has a wonderful temperament but simply doesn’t understand “no” from humans or dogs. He gets very excited about little kids and other dogs, to the point he is becoming almost reactive. I think part of it has come from taking him out with the older dog, he has learned that barking at other dogs is normal. Luckily he is not at the stage where he will completely ignore me, and we are working on getting him to ignore other dogs more when he should be paying attention. I also messed up with treats, this dog no longer finds any value in any treat, he will work simply for praise but if he finds a smell more interesting then there is absolutely no hope. Again he is pretty much perfect temperament wise and does listen the vast majority of the time. I just got lucky with getting the right dog, he is confident to a fault and will play with dogs three times his size, he can walk well on lead and for our daily walks will spend some time off lead while sticking close by, he is absolutely one of the smartest dogs I’ve met, he learnt to play dead reliably in 3 short training sessions, he understands most basic commands in 3 languages (sit and down in 4), he perfect for being groomed, I can take him anywhere and know that if I insisted he wouldn’t put a foot wrong. I have had my ups and downs with this pup but he has taught me so much in the 10 months I’ve had him. I’m not perfect and he’s not perfect, but for a first time raising a puppy I he has certainly given me a helping hand. I couldn’t have asked for a better puppy.
Okay, I've watched the video. I'm confused as to how to begin this. My dog is completely fixated on squirrels. I don't understand how I begin this training and him not be fixated on squirrels. Maybe if I had a squirrel to pitch out in front of him, this might work.
This is a good Video, thx. We took another Road but its near yours: We actually got a puppy and hes constantly and only fed by Hand for doing his "Job". We aint use a housline instead we Interrupt him clearly, also we Exchange a lot. Here is the food the key, everytime he got something interesting, we aint take it away instead he brings it to us and gets a tiny portion of food. This works great. It also works outside - If he got something he'll bring it to me. He never destroyed anything. To the socialisation, we don't let him meet everyone. This need is a human need, dogs dont need that! He actually has a few Dog friends in Dog school and one the neighbourhood. This made him gentle little Boy. We're in the don't touch my Dog Team. People need to ask us first for contact that way he learned, we are the ones who decide whats going on.
The only problem I have with this video is that the actual training and the reaction of the dog are not shown. Thanks though for explaining why the training was successful in this particular case and which things needed to be considered. Yes, aversive methods - if applied correctly and sensibly - may improve the quality of life in the long run. That's a fact. Just like it's a fact that they can ruin lives if applied unreasonably and messy. That's why it's so important to explain what you're doing and why.
Very well explained what it takes to get the best out of this controversial tool, thanks!
Wow if anyone ever wondered how to build engagement this is the video to watch.
Really underrated video every dog owner should see this
The final tip was good. I’m not sure starving the dog ( working for minimum wage is best). I have a border collie she is nearly 2 from dog rescue. She is not motivated by food and I let her eat her fill ( raw food). I give her a bowl of food and if it’s not enough she asks me for more and I let her have it as I do not know how much she needs on that particular day as I cannot even judge for another human as they have different requirements, sometimes it’s too much and she leaves it. She never begs at the table because she’s not hungry. If I tell her she cannot have something I’m eating she accepts it immediately. Yesterday, for the first time I took her on two buses and a train to Rhyl. She was absolutely calm and perfect as both buses and trains were packed with people getting on and off. No treats necessary,I have never used treats as an inducement .I was surprised myself. She has become a fantastic dog without bribery ,starvation or unkindness as dogs used to be. She is always onside. The most important thing is the respect that the dog has for you and its relationship with you. When they say that dogs are like their owners,I’m afraid that is true. The dog is not a stupid automaton. It is a sentient being with a natural desire to please her owner. We underestimate dogs and imagine that we can force the dog out of the dog by starving it or punishing it but then what is left? Yes Sir,No Sir,three bags full sir. It’s not really a dog.
Thank you! Stumbling on dog daddy was a game changer for me in training and forming a better relationship with my dog and gave me ability to take in another dog impromptu so she wouldn't be put in shelter. She needed to learn communication between her humans and impulse control and that helped her anxious peeing a ton! I still have a lot to learn and just feel as though I should go through some proper training. Your videos are helpful as well. I appreciate talking about dog behavior to explain your methods while you perform them. Those are the game changing teaching moments!
Thank you for giving some of this info for free Already spent a fortune And you just can't keep doing it Also a bit suspicious of trainers who are just into the hard sell rather than giving some help Much appreciated
Thank you for making mine #1
Some serious training needed for vets so you get the correct advice 😡
Fantastic advice Incredibly frustrating that this isn't easily highlighted when you read all the stuff you do before getting dog or in "how to raise your puppy We read mountains before getting our first dog NO mention of reactivity or how to prevent Just lots of rubbish about how to get them to sit or give a paw However most of the people I know that got first time puppies with us DONOT Have reactive dogs and look at me as if I'm mad when I mention mine is We have put soooo much work in SO why aren't all "first time pups reactive? And as we can't turn back the clock how the heck do we undo it I am so frustrated with doing what 3 behaviourists have told me to do and still have a reactive dog
I spread out dry food .... let hin eat and inbetween make recall with high value reward ... on a 8 meter leash ...
Reactivity made worse by discomfort! yikes I need to train myself again ! And yes I can give do this?
I use one with my Malinois...and she actually comes running when I hold it to put it on. REASON, because when I use it regularly...and she comes...there is a MaroSnack. She always comes, just in case!!! But anytime I beep on the collar...it is to call her to come to me. And she is three years old and if she is anywhere on my two acres without hollering...she hears the little been and hightails it back to me. Sometimes there is a treat...and sometimes NOT. But she always comes. I almost never use the shock...but just enough so she actually KNOWS the BAD SIDE...but the good side is almost always...the occasional use of the SHOCK is really effective. She almost never does anything wrong...so when I get the collar and test it to see that it is one both control and collar...she comes and sits and holds her head up so I can put it on. She loves the E-collar. It is simply a good thing with treats (mostly)
The Dog Daddy has been calling him out FOREVER I’m no professional dog trainer, but the #1 rule for any potential dog owner is to make sure YOU are the alpha. How? Learn how alphas think & behave in a pack.
Ahhh#1dog needs more excercise poo and leash control .yes this tough age my pup is finally neutered and 2yrs and the last year of trying to train mastiff has resulted in knee injury of myself and other dog with no control RUFF PLAY! Additionally the thrill of dog fights has produced a bad history and constant goal there is a chance of trusting h8m.
Holy shit! I used reward markers to train my bulldog mix - and did so at mealtimes to make him more eager to learn, subsequently making him learn after the first session of training - without knowing WTF I was doing and here is this professional K9 trainer telling me it’s one of his hacks 🤯
We've been retraining a rescue dog who totally ignores treats outside, but is super motivated by attention. Once we clicker trained him, training outside was SO much easier
Aww - ask if they are happy, and the look of the dog in the forest! That really moved ne, cos i want that for every dog (& person- most people seek pleasure ratger thsn happiness)
This information is amazing. Thank you I feed raw food - and it's wet (all other foods cause diarrhoea). How do i do the feeding from my hand? I can give him small amounts of low value treats - but not a whole meal worth! Thanks
I think the food thing depends on the pup. I was very stingy with treats, and I found it really hard to get my dogs attention. (Even with super high value treats) When I relaxed on this, treating him more often when out, I had his attention constantly on me and it worked much better.
