I have followed these instructions exactly, but when I convert the text to a path and ungroup, I am not able to move text individually. It remains as one thing. I then tried "Object" and "release compound path" and that did break them into individual letters and allow me to edit the path points, but when I overlapped letters and tried to use the XOR to combine them, it didnt' work either. I have been struggling with this for hours. Can you help please.

Just bought a site licence for Focus D&T and absolutely love it! Highly recommended, especially the Focus 2D Designer, much better than the outdated Techsoft software and the only way of teaching and using vector graphics using a Chromebook. Please keep producing these excellent video tutorials.
Would be great to supply the image of the butterfly so students can work alone with this tutorial. Any chance you can link to it in the description?
