Taking My Father Up Flying In My Cozy MKIV Canard Airplane
Having an airplane means I can visit my family for just a day - they live in Canada, and are a 6-hour drive from me, so driving out for a day is just not practical. But flying out for lunch is definitely possible! On this trip I meet up with my father, a lifelong pilot and lover of aviation, and let him fly my Cozy for a bit. Then it's back over the border, clear customs, and home again.

It was far too nice a day to not go flying, so I took my Cozy up to go look at the colorful leaves, and see how they showed up on my new video camera. While up, I zipped over to a nearby airport to practice some aero-braking landings. Not so proud of the landings I did in this flight, but eh - I've done worse. :) 0:00 Intro 0:32 My New Camera! 1:40 Takeoff 3:19 Let's Go To Lorain 4:47 Approachi...
Should You Use a Canard For Initial Pilot Training?
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.21 день назад
Canard airplanes have significant advantages in terms of safety, stall/spin resistance, efficiency and ease of flight. You might think that they would be ideal as an initial training airplane for pilots. In this video I explain why this is likely not a good idea, and why you should select a conventional airplane for your initial pilot training. 0:00 Intro 0:43 Speed & Task Saturation 3:05 PTS T...
Second Nature Pilot Reactions - Do You Do This?
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.21 день назад
When you've been flying for a long time, some reactions become second nature - they occur without you even thinking about them. However...sometimes those reactions spill over into your regular, non-aviation life. A Cheap Hangar Aviation Radio for $20 - Listen To Your CTAF!
Просмотров 16 тыс.Месяц назад
I wanted a simple radio in my hangar so that I could listen to the traffic at the airport and get an idea of the winds and what is going on. If your airport has an AWOS, it's also a great way to get an idea of weather conditions. In addition, you can use one to check that your ELT is not going off. However, aviation radios like this can cost hundreds of dollars! In this video, I tell you about ...
Flying to Wisconsin to Pull a Wing Off and Fix My Magnetometer!

I've had a problem with my magnetometer since I've had this airplane: it consistently reads 15 degrees to the left. After talking with Garmin, they think the magnetometer is positioned incorrectly. To get to it, the left wing has to come off...so I fly to Wisconsin to visit the original builder, and we pull the wing off, fix the magnetometer and then I fly home! 0:00 Intro 0:28 Preflight and pr...

Canard 50 Year Celebration at Lancaster, OH
- I hear that nowadays it's popular to go flying back and forth at night in New Jersey 🤣
- Cool.
Watching you come in low and slow while staying above the big tree, I was wondering if you can slip a Cozy?
Hi Scott, I met you last July in Nova Scotia, I am your cousin Rhonda’s husband. It was great meeting you and I also had the pleasure of meeting your dad and spoke with him and your mom for a while. So great to see you having a great flight with your dad! Enjoying your RUclips channel! Keep up the great content. Thanks, Dale.
Thanks for the video Scott. My dad may have been in the same Navy as your dad. If you ever fly to Hamilton you will be able to do an excellent video of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. There are 47 military jets and prop engine planes. Or a 35 minute drive with your dad from Brampton.
Heartwarming to hand Dad the reigns -n- let him fly even for just a few minutes. I knew you probably would offer it & I was glad as he took her. So where did you put the ballast after you pulled it out of the nose? Do you put it in the middle, behind you or is there a different setup to balance everything? I kinda hoped Dad would pull some "G's" or perform a barrel roll but I liked the whole bit. I saw you go up to visit 1 time but I didn't get any indication of how mobile Dad was, he's getting along quite well. Thanks for this video Scott ~ beam me up ! please take care & GB ALL
You will be old. One day you will fail your medical. Then this memory will still be with you. I hope you are blessed with a child who will carry the mantle. 2 Kings 2 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
This is an overdue thanks & appreciation for *all* your posts and range of flying topics/issues you explore. After 15+ years of flying interest & experience, my hope of owning/flying a canard aircraft has diminished, but my love for the design certainly hasn't. You & your site provide your followers the vicarious enjoyment of flying in your aircraft! (Your procedures & communications in controlled airspace are instructively superb as well.) THANK YOU, Scott, for all you share! Looking forward as always to your next post, Dana the BikePilot/HangarTroll
Very nice. I never got a chance to take my dad up in my experimental. Enjoy! (which you clearly do)
I can tell your dad had a great day. He seemed to enjoy telling you about the past. I envy you with your time with your dad.
I'm really trying to make the most of the time we have left!
You always bring back memories for me. I got my instructor ticket at DKK a month before 9/11.
Wonderful memories made. Enjoyed
Ha I have the first like and comment!
Fantastic video, tuned in because I spend time at elevation in the mountains of WY, 8 to 12,000 ft.
20:26, way too fast on final
Exactly what I said in the video. Bad approach makes for bad landing.
That's cool you got to meet Mark! I love reading his replies on the email thread! His sarcasm is top notch! I kinda miss his WTFIGOH game.
LOL! That's life just reassuring you that you ARE IN FACT alive! hahahahaha, been there done that.
Jd killed jd.😢
I love the landings in the Cozy, seems you have to fly it all the way down!
Nice job on your channel. Enjoyable to watch. Video and photography hint. Get and cut to size a flat black cloth. Cut it to fit the glare shield, hold it in place with a few velcro sticky adhesives dots so you can remove it. When you record video, it will get rid of that annoying white ghost on your canopy directly in front of the camera. Blue skies and tail winds.
Well, your videos have cost me a lot of money. I went to Nashville last week and bought a Velocity. I flew it to Tampa on Friday with a ferry pilot. Now I’ll have to get transition training before my insurance company will let me fly it.
That's amazing! Congratulations!
I just learned too! Did not know that!
Looks great Scott! You do good work! I always love fixing things like that. I know we all want to fly too, but building and repairs are almost as much fun. Well, it is for ME anyway!
And with airplanes, it's a necessity!
They didn’t call you Cozy but after today’s aero braking sortie they should be calling you Cozy Fighting Falcon. Nice video as usual.
I knew that was a Realistic in the background as soon the vid started. Dating myself. 😏
I’ve spent the week doing this same type of landing practice in a LongEZ.
Curious why you announced over the field but didn’t cross over the field? Just curious. If I was flying and you reported over the field I would be looking over the field and not in the location where you called out that location. Thanks Scott!
I was actually directly over the threshold of 01 when I made that call. The fuselage and canard are blocking it, but if the canard had not been there, you would have seen hangar rows A and B.
I hear you speak about the brakes quite often, good thing to have... stopping power! I heard you mention using a flap type of slowing you down but I'm more curious about the mechanical brakes? How much wear do your brakes get on a fast running plane like this? I'm trying to understand how fast you "use up or burn" the brakes down enough to need to replace them? I mean it all depends on how much you use them but how fast do they wear to like a car? Again, I do thank you for your work(s).... fly high, fly safe. peace
The wheels are fairly small to reduce drag, therefore the brake linings are also quite small, as are the rotors. So bringing an airplane from 70 knots down to zero definitely heats them up. I go through a set of brake linings in about a year, so maybe 70 or 80 landings and they need to be replaced.
Thanks for putting a time frame into my mind, obviously stopping is paramount & this little Canard is a slippery fast bird.... lol, I knew the wheel sizes was small meaning the rotor surface was also very small. The life of the surface measured in landings based on your average speed is quite the calculation. You are very good at the analytics of this aircraft or I think you are based on some of the info you show us like the flight plan including the elevation & a whole lot more. In one video you showed the 4 cylinder head temperatures along w/ other engine data as you were trying to figure it all out. KUDO's Sir, it doesn't take much to impress me & I really appreciate how you share and teach any who wish to learn. peace until the next chapter.
I really like your fly a longs! I think you made a Great choice on the camera replacement. I didn't get to the fall leave changes and here it is and The footage is Great, Thank You!
Thanks Scott! Looks like the best foliage is right around your airport! One of the few things I miss about being back up north...
Hey Scott, Enjoyed the video and especially that you ended up doing your touch and goes in Elyria. My Dad was born there. Couple questions... what brand is your new camera. The videos are noticeably better... much more crisp. Also, when your doing voice overs, what mic are you using.
It's a 4K Innovv K6. The microphone is just a cheap Rode Podmic - can't be bothered getting out my expensive mics every time I am narrating a video. :)
Scott, how did you know that I was studying other Cozy landings to improve mine?!?! 😄 Certainly is timely. Now all I need is good weather to go practice more.
Well, a lot of this video is what NOT to do! :) :)
The marks on the prop looks like condensation/soot from the exhaust.
The exhaust soot on the prop is always in a narrow band right behind the exhaust pipes. This was in fact paint.
Betteridge's Law strikes again! Great video, I like how you go through the ACS task by task. This vid is also good for going through the drawbacks of a canard plane.
I am highly interested in getting my pilots license and a canard so I can jump into my plane any time I want to fly from FL to NY to see my parents.
Well it's not ANY time you want...we're still dictated to by weather - if the weather is beyond the capabilities of you or your airplane, you don't fly. But for the most part it works out!
ha, yanking back on the car steering wheel. love it. were you married 10yrs ago when you did the 141?
I did my 141 in 1991/1992, so quite a bit more than 10 years ago, and no I wasn't married!
@ oh! I misheard. That makes more sense, it seems like a youthful pursuit.
Right after I watched this I found a Realistic PRO-2023 on eBay for $29 instead of $20 and it looks and works great, I didn't have to do anything to it. I ordered the same antenna you have, programmed my local channel and guard, and it just started working. Thanks for turning me on to this!
Is over-rotating what leads to stalling the wing behind you? I just saw another video where you just cleared the trees at the end of the runway. In that the runway condition was poor & you had to push the stick forward on two occasions in order to get the speed to gain altitude. Or I think that's what I was seeing where pulling back might've stalled the wing, you pushed forward 2 times to gather a little more lift to get up/over the trees. Fascinating to me, anyhoo... thanks man
You can't stall the main wing on this plane. If anything, over rotating will cause a prop strike. What you saw me do in that other video, was push the nose over to gain airspeed in ground effect before then pulling up to clear the trees.
I felt the pressure you encountered from here so I can't imagine the stress that rolled across you.... but there was not any time to be too afraid, you can do that afterwards. Your keeping the focus on getting more speed on those 2 times was what got you up -n- away. I learned a lot just seeing you go thru that. Anyhoo, thank you again for the time. peace
Thanks, you've got a way of explaining things that resonate in me..... Whatever it is I'd sign up if you were a University Teacher b/c you've got that heir about you. I found a canard Pt103 aircraft "Falcon" looking for more as that's the way I'd want to Fly...peace
Thanks for your kind words!
WoW, I was afraid for you ! I knew the "Cozy" takes a paved runway & it needs to be a longer area to land but until I just watched your "Why I bought a Canard" video I didn't understand the center of balance issues within this plane. That was the first I'd heard of weighted ballasts in the front end which makes sense but it still surprised me. Thanks for sharing all this. peace
Yes Scott, I have found all the "canard" family of aircraft interesting..... lol, I've been watching you for 7-8 months now & patiently await each new chapter. I started thinking about actually flying at my age & a pilot license might not be attainable for me which has led me to look a Part 103 offerings. I just found the "Falcon" models of aircraft & I'm excited. I'll thank you & thanks for the COG info, I didn't know about the stall characteristics of the plane. I knew it was hard to stall but didn't know the rear could actually stall. Thanks again & I'm entertaining the possibility...... Ohh yeah, I am. peace & GB ALL
John Denver died by his own doing. As a Hoarder of both Gasoline and Aviation Gas. He failed to ensure he had enough fuel in the Plane. Since he failed to Fill the Fuel tanks. He Took his own life.
I like it. I use "data only sims" from Google Fi for things like my ipad. Wouldn't work for this since it needs a phone number, though. Annoyed at my new hangar because it's a perfect faraday cage. No hotspot or anything.
As a computer geek, I was chucking at your "Have you tried turning off and back on?" moment. The sad part is how often that works.
hey i love your videos made me actually see the cozy as a good affordable ish airplane, can you please make a video on the cozy MK-IV Half Moon Bay, CA 14 Jan 24 crash as a follow up to the john denver video you made around 1 year ago
Anything I have to say on that tragedy at Half Moon Bay would be outright speculation, as the only information we have thus far is what the NTSB has released. I have my suspicions as to what may have happened, but until the NTSB releases its report, I don't think it's right to speculate.
