Exploring Berlin's Lost Metro line
The ‘Siemensbahn’, a rapid transit line in Berlin, Germany, has been abandoned for over 40 years. But how come such a valuable piece of infrastructure just turns into a lost place?

This was supposed to be a Highway

The ‘Pergolenviertel’ in Hamburg, Germany, was built in the path of what was formerly supposed to be an urban highway. You can still find many traces of this former plan in and around the neighborhood. An interesting look into the past and somehow also the future of the Berlin S-Bahn. When I see these pictures, I automatically associate them with the S1 line, which I use every day and which may eventually cease to exist in this form some time in the future. It must have been a really strange feeling for the people who used to take it to work every day and saw how this line was slowly being reclaimed by nature. Interesting video and I'm curious to see how it will develop in the coming months and years.
I was obsessed with the Siemensbahn 1 year ago and would have loved a video like this one! Now I finally have it! Yay!
In summer I see people all the time wandering up there. I didn't know the history of it and thought its quiet dangerous to be on railways, thought they are still active. Just realized I have never seen a train there lol. Guess I was living obliviously in the past 9 years
Can you climb on the abandoned stations and tracks? I live in Berlin and want to explore it.
12 years to late;)
Used this place many years ago to film a funky series with friends. I think it was called "Zerberster Demon/Jesus Warriors"
i live in siemenstadt. that would be pretty nice to have a train line from s bahn jungfernheide, which is on the ring, all the way to the last station, gartenfeld. but with the u7 underground line it is not justified. from wernerwerk to gartenfeld with a biycle it is like 5 minutes. i don't think it is worth all of the effort. maybe with 30k more ppl in the neighborhood it will make more sense.
great video. was unaware of this route, I was always curious about these abandoned stations.
A number of years ago, I had a stay at Holiday Inn Berlin City West - close to the airport. Remember passing below a slightly scary looking railway line - disused - to get to the subway, Rohrdam I believe - is this the same line ?
Rohrdam it's a U-bahn station close to that abandoned S-bahn line
Why you would not say the name of the station during the entire video? Where is it??? Is it a secret or something
It's S-Bahn Wernerwerk, maps.app.goo.gl/ZFx6T2T8ik522HBC9, next to station U7 Siemensdamm.
@@nonoodleno yeah, actually, found this entire abandoned line on google maps on aerial view, thanks!
i love your videos
berlin ist ein DRECKSLOCH
Stick to the topic. I happen to be like you in preferring cities be for people first cars last, but I also happen to love Modern architecture! Your comments on style put me off so I couldn't watch your whole video! The notorious Le Corbusier indeed! Keep your uncultivated views on style to yourself and your videos would improve.
Congratulations on a very good first video 🎉
Very good job, I like your presentation and video structure, I was quite surprised, you only have 2 videos. 💪
Lived in Germany for 16 years, yet never made it to Berlin. Still on a wish list. In old magazine there was also a large abandoned rail yard in Berlin, with all the construction not sure if it would still be there.
Great Video, thanks for that
:D LoL The mice you are holding is not a hand micro, it has a clip, so you can clip it to your clothes and don't need to hold it like a weird dumbo :D
speak slow dude... no need to rush
Yay! Engaging content, not just from my hometown but even from my block! Thanks for sharing this story, keep up the good work 👍
Which tool did you use for the AI voices by the way? They sound phenomenal
Brian thanks, good video. You remind me of Thilo, from Kleo. Just saying :)
Great Video
This slow voice puts me to sleep.
Amazing documentary! I loved to learn more about the line's history and also that of the whole S-Bahn system. I'm very excited about all the new transit projects happening here, hoping that they will actually be realised on time and without major complications. And thanks for the great shots of the places, which definitely haven't inspired me to maybe go take a look for myself...
An interesting history project would be to find out what happened to the bricks from the Anhalter railway station. According to many sources, there was some question about what was to be done with the beautiful Anhalter station, but that its bricks were needed by other construction projects, and that's why it was demolished. Its brickwork was very unique. But no one has ever been able to say where those bricks ended up.
Let's hope that they leave as much of the trees as possible rather than razing everything. Berliners love their trees. Reconstruct the line, but leave the trees around it.
super editing, weiter so!
❤ Hamburg
I think the buildings failed because the highway wasn't finished
seems like a good quality video. but ruined for me by the use of AI dictation. im not going to support that, sorry.
The highway freeway expressway whatever are ugly!
Thanks. I didn't know about that piece of history.
Echt cooler Beitrag Brian
Awesome video! Did you walk the line weekday or weekend?
Ikea also has the (so far) only Ikea Shoping center in Lübeck which is north of Hamburg. Its an Ikea which is open to an shopping center so you can go in to the upper and lower lvl from the center directly :)
Not a metro line
It is not a metro line
The Paln to reuse it for a S-Bahn Serive
Great video ... looking forward to more insights
I’m torn with this. Hate the idea of big box store architecture flooding town centres. But then I’d love to nip down to a local store for some new picture frames instead of driving an hour to the nearest outer city store 😂
It's shame we didn't get a new autobahn
Used to work there, amazing times w/ the amazing ppl of altona, the team was awesome also.
Literally We always take sbahn from this hamburg altona ikea. Public transport is mostly better.
jezus christ why are all these new buildings so ugly
They have also in İstanbul Bayrampaşa
This Train Station represent the deep structural division of German Industry which is in place till today. After WWII everything what the Russian did not took from East Germany (included West-Berlin due to broken supply chains) went into West Germany mainland. Audi, Siemens, Edeka, Deutsche Bank.... all from East German Region. The greatest Airport was Berlin not Frankfurt. The common German Narrative is to blame GDR economics but this is politcal bs, GDR only finished it.
This is a great idea to repurpose dying and bankrupt shopping malls in many city centers. They could even night time parking for locals, as inner city parking at night is usually hard to find. If there was an Ikea in the city center I wiuld go much more often. @ikea
Shame they didn't reuse the existing building.
Very interesting video, especially because I work there, live there and also had in school a presentation about the City Nord and the large housing development in Steilshoop🙈 Really funny what was modern 70 years ago. Nice video, waiting for the next😎
