TLC Homestead

Добавлен 26 мар 2022
Welcome to Tiny Lost Creek (TLC) Homestead where we are trying to make an enjoyable place for for us to work our traditional day jobs remotely using Starlink while enjoying the creations God has provided for us. Taking a piece of neglected land and converting it to something nice is no easy chore and has required everything from both a traditional tractor and a Ventrac, along with all those attachments, through chainsaws and pole saws and other things we simply do not realize we need yet. You can get ideas from us as we clean the land, construct buildings, work the driveways and paths, plant fruit/nut/decorative trees, prepare gardens and get places setup for livestock.
Accomplishing all these tasks has proven to be a challenge and we will share what has worked, what has not worked and what plans we have as we continue the journey we started over a decade ago. This land has come a long way since we started and it has a long way to go before it can provide a sustainable way of life.

Beautiful baby ❤ same age as my pup Riley ❤
They leave puppy stage too quickly :)
Pretty fast
Amazing how fast dog can travel!
I’m wondering if this is a polesaw line men use
Not sure, but I LOVE mine :)
Can you move the pole to the other side of the conduit? Just a thought, but overall love the progress. Looking forward to crane day!!!
I was pondering the same thing but I broke down and dug it out to move pipe, many because timing was perfect --= my neighbor rented a mini-Ex and had just over an hour to burn before he returned it :)
So what happens is when you start smoothing the concrete you get a "cream" that comes to the surface, the rain rinsed the cream off to expose the aggregate. I'd add an extra layer of insulation between the house and wall to take up the gaps. Great idea to have him leave the tabs, could come in handy later on. 10 1/2!!!!
Interesting. I am by no means a cement/concrete guy. I did ask about the insulation and I was told they will put some down before they put sill plate on. Which is getting closer every day!
Good news, cement doesn't care about the rain. The guy who said he wasn't getting on the wall is climbing around like a pro. Great video, with screen in screen, of the day's work. A word of caution about walking in the trench, if part of that dirt wall comes loose, you'd be in a bit of trouble.
That wall in trench has been super solid, up until the rains came, but you are correct. Not a safe place to be.
You've designed in a "hidey-hole"! Stock it with bourbon and a few bags of chips, you'll be fine! Thanks for all the detail on the foundation forms, really looking good. You're procrastinating on moving that pipe :). "My logic is flawed...nobody can complain" famous last words. Thanks for the update.
That pipe did finally move BUT, it was late at night day before they poured garage floor :)
Love how you laid out the power strategy, and the foundation works looks great. The longer format videos are also put together well, lots of good information being shared. Sad to hear you have to pull both trees.
Thanks for comment. I really really need to find my mic which has that wind break cover. I used to use it in the past but we are prepping to move to the house and things are EVERYWHERE and I have no idea where it is. I am still waiting on the power company. They said I would have power by thanksgiving which would rock. We have about 10-12 people every year and this year we want to eat in the basement so there is a lot of room. I am going to hang a big tap and drop a couple space heaters if we can get power. I am crossing my fingers!!!
Is it possible you could give a breakdown on what this project cost start to finish?
Heh, I am not sure I have exacts for what this is all running but I'll see what I can do. So far I have both "quotes" and "estimates" for various parts of this. Example, the excavation guys is an estimate and will charge an exact number based on hour meter usage once we are done where teh concrete guy is a quote and that one is fixed.
Appreciate the documentary... very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! I am also hoping as I get old and sit out on my (someday) deck widdling a stick I can stream these old videos and jog down memory lane :)
Beautiful view man!
Thanks! Many many yeas ago when we were looking at properties and toured this one my wife said "we are in trouble" as we were both smiling :)
You are going to have a really nice house when it is done. Do you have any stories as the process has progressed on contractors you needed to fire, problems, how you found contractors, etc. I don't understand why you decided to connect the retaining walls to the house. Typically, they installed after the final grading has been done.
Thanks for the hopeful end result :) I do have plans for an episode 0 fort how we started the process rolling. There was about 60-75 days of various things before day 1 of this series. Good idea to talk about contractors as well. Short version is we have used the same excavator for 10+ years so we trusted his recommendations then did research on folks he suggested. Example. He gave three concrete folks. I talked to all three and researched all three before deciding. I'll make a video when we get to the "waiting" phase. Walls poured yesterday, next week is more wall pours and hopefully floors. Then some work on waterproofing and such. Between last wall pour and house delivery is a main of 28 days so I'll fill that time with a background video.
is it still good? Im getting a 3.2 gallon one
@siglematic3092 So far, it is still going strong! I have used it maybe 12 to 15 times. Typically, one tank per use but a few times 2-4 tanks in a use. I still love it. It's only been a single season, and I cleaned after each use.
You have footers!!!! That’s a huge step forward. Best part is the concrete guys got to use the new, user friendly, driveway! They probably didn’t realize what an improvement that really was.
I will say that we have had a longer than usual dry spell. The rare rain we have gotten over last two months has nto been enough to stem dust from teh driveway changes. All the trucks back and forth has given me a dusty road. I have to hose my wife's car off every time we go to town so the LE does not think I am trying to hide my plate :D I have one or two more videos in queue which should get me caught up to where we are. But, we did just get the 1st basement wall concrete wall pour yesterday!
Love it, badminton in the front yard but sounds like we should send shuttlecocks for the housewarming! Great job on, Mika!, the videos love seeing the progress.
HAH! I spend all my time on the day job, animal chores or projects. I am not sure what play is like anymore. I kind of remember badminton from when I was a kid and I think it is a fat man version of tennis which I used to like :)
Awww, I never tire of seeing a happy critter
I came round and saw what you did there :)
Dogs just want to eat, work, sleep and play!
Yes, and this duchie is more energy than any dog I have had in the past!
So funny and cute !!!😂
Thanks!
Nice… 48 ft deck! Appreciate you bringing us on the journey
Our pleasure! I am hoping things work as planned but I am trying to not "hide" issues I am running into. Thankfully, so far they are minor :)
What kind of septic system are you going to install?
@@johnevans6053 we talked through a few options and landed on the old school lateral field style. Big tank about 10' from the house that feeds a series of lateral lines
that drive way wont be there for long
I am not sure what part you mean but time shall tell. I am taking a guess you mean due to the edges and the drop ... and if that is the case I am not concerned. Not the first time I have had that steep of a bank, all the rocks and clay hold things nicely. Besides, this is not the finished product but nearly a phrase in making drive as wide as possible. Dozer will make edges less steep at the end of all this :)
Tell us what you did with it. How did you get it back to normal
I just let it sit until summer. Sadly the oil was useless for me as I had planned. Lesson learned -- keep a bottle inside the house just incase :)
Things are really going to start moving at a quick pace now. I like the extra T wall and having the retaining walls poured at the beginning of the project not trying to engineer it after the fact. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.
I am trying to edit more vids to upload. I actually deleted a few days instead of uploading since the changes were not drastic enough for me to think worth while BUT ... I hope walls are poured in 3-4 days! Getting closer.
So much work to get to concrete work. It all looks great and the driveway will be much more accessible not only for the house but for everything that comes after it. Great update.
Thanks! Since we have had this property for 12ish years we drive in and find the changes hard to believe :D
Man oh man, what ton of work on that driveway and it looks amazing! All of the red clay and rocks and explosives?!
I was worried we would need to use explosives, it was listed as a possibility. Thankfully we did not need any as that would ahve raised my costs pretty high.
Hi, i was wondering if you'd recommend that i get a dutch shepherd, i can't choose between dutch shepherd and German shepherd. 😊
wow, that is a hard question :) Yes: if you have time to work with the dog, room for it to run and if you have the patience of Job! I have over 80 ac of land and go to training once a week with Meka. She is the best dog I ever had. If you want to understand why I say what I say watch this video * ruclips.net/video/Gmdcw2YVoxs/видео.html This is a typical day with her. She is akin to drinking a case of sugar infused energy drinks and then trying to sit still to watch a movie! Now, if you can handle all that for the next 10-13 years ... I cannot recommend a duchie enough. This one follows me everywhere, velcro dog is an understatement.
@@MacMyaa two different dogs find people in your town who have one. And talk to them
Thank you for documenting the step by step process. This is interesting.
You are so welcome! This is my first time doing a home build, out in the country. The last two homes were in the city, you show up and pick from a menu -- wait 3-4 months then move in. This is WAY different :)
Ours does it too❤
This is a sky trim or a jraff im an operator it's boom goes 75 ft some are smaller 60 57 he's kinda moving slow you can bounce the boom make it swing up and down cuts way faster
Nice. How long did it take. What settings did you have it at.
Have you tried storing it and rehydrating it? Been making freeze dry taco meat, had good luck there, good luck with sour cream, mixed results with shredded cheese. But looking for more things to add to the meat to make a taco bowl to store back for camping or radio trips (put the sour cream and cheese in separate mylar to rehydrate cold or sprinkle on the taco bowl).
Looks like you have a 50/50 mix of rocks and clay. The driver is looks good but it’s literally tons of work! I would be concerned about how rain runs off.
I have many many many rocks, if only there was a way to make money from rocks without destroying my place :) Rain is always something I am dealing with on my driveway. Grand total I have about 1/2 mile of driveway and there are spots where I get ruts over time. Typically I need to touchup about once a year, or two. You are right tho, if left unchecked I will get big tire swallowing ruts in my drive.
That’s not a Dutch shepherd, that’s a tree fairy!!! Too funny, love it!!
She is FULL of energy and even when she is giving me extra work she is fun. I will say this is my first duchie and I think I'll have this breed from here out. They are a TON of work but awesome dogs. I have NOT trained her for bite work but I am pretty confident from how she acts that if someone threatened me she would react. You do need to watch this breed for overworking themselves. Food and water are not the first things on her mind when outside. I am trying to train her to "water" means take a drink. I have hopes that once my house is further along to work with my trainer for search and rescue. My previous dog was SAR but he liked cadavers a bit toooo much so we were never deployed :)
I thought these dogs were used to guard sheep, or other small animals. What are these 2 doing? Dogs bred to work and do not have work get depressed. 😮😮
@lindaarnold5683 these 2 live in a 5ac fence pasture with sheep, goats and pigs. They are young still and their main goal is to make sure the coyotes, bobcats and such stay away from my animals 😀
Great video! For the corner posts they stayed until the concrete guys got there and they asked me to choose the one that would not move, the rest shifted a little to make things square. I appreciate all the work being done on the driveway, there will be a lot of big machines visiting and your work will make things go much more smoothly. Thanks for bringing us along!
You are most likely correct on the pick a corner comment. But, I was not asked, they just dug away.
Good luck man... about to start a similar project at my place.
This is sure turning into a journey. Progress has mov ed along faster than I can edit videos. We get the footers poured in two days! I am excited. I hope yours goes smoothly. Keep an eye on what I am doing and checkout North of 44 Degrees for his build process. Then you can do even better, third time is a charm they say :-)
ah, that was my Dutch Shepherds name Mika, I miss my girl!
Awww, sad when they leave us, for any reason. I wonder, was your Mika as crazy as mine is? :D
Pallets are usually pressure treated and therefore toxic. I don’t think you should let a dog chew on them
I struggle with her chewing everything. The first trip to the vet with her at 10 weeks old my vet said "ohhh, this is a mouthy breed, you better get her good training!" He was spot on. She is not happy unless she is either chewing / destroying something or being worked.
😂😂😂😂
Oh my what big ears you have ......
The better to hear you with 😂
👎🤮
So I'm not alone my Dutch chews on rocks too 😂. Gorgeous dog Sir!
I am trying to break her of that habbit but she is crazy for rocks. Right now I have a house build going on and rocks everywhere as the excavators are digging, she is in hog haven. I am worried about her teeth. My wife has already told she cannot have titanium implants :)
@@rondrebronson6524 thanks
That’s good!
Thanks!
When I see prep work like what you’re doing I understand why my guys where laughing at my install Good sized road in Wide flat driveway that only had 4 small trees to remove and lots of room to park house pieces and a gigantic crane It’s going to look great once it’s done and you’ll get great use out of the driveway too! Looking forward to day 6!!
This is a journey for sure. I need to edit and upload a few more days as we just finished day 15 yesterday. This look way different since day 5 :) I have had this driveway for about 12 years. Over time I have done little things myself to make it better but never even close to all this work. They dug over 2,000 yards of dirt for the house, most went on the entrance -- give you an idea of how drastically different that is now!
@@tlchomestead I have to remember to watch your shorts!!!! 🤔 You do a lot more with the short format videos than I do. I'll get caught up later this evening.
@Northof44Degrees-rj5wt i do more of the shorts because they are easier. I'll get my long vids edited someday soon. I am getting close to where the mad dash will be on hold wai5ing for cement to dry 😅
Must be paying him by the hour and not by the day bc he's slow AF 🫢
I cannot speak to speed of his work, I can say when I dug the existing wallow which is 1/4 the size it took me over an hour, by hand. He dug each of these ones in under 5 minutes, made me happy :)
