Why I'm Not Using Borax on Laser Engravings
Flood fill doesn't always save time to check the setting for all settings you use. Just something to get used to. And metal duct tape works well too with only one layer.
Oh, I told that you’re not supposed to try to engrave reflective items in the laser
Myth Buster!! Love it!
I just bought a xtool S1 20w laser. It seems like xtool has taken care of a lot of the issues you are talking about. That being said, YT has a myriad of videos to watch and learn about all of the issues you covered here. Thanks for the valuable information.
Curtis, I always learn so much from watching you. Keep posting, please.
Thanks Jack! I really appreciate that!
Looks great! How durable is the engraving? I’m curious what the ring would look like after being worn a while.
I've always heard you have to protect with some clear coat or varnish to avoid degradation over time, even with a mopa.
I can't speak to the durability of the rings but I color marked a stainless steel tumbler for my partner and she used it all day every day for at least 8 months with no changes to the color. I didn't do anything to protect the tumbler. I have no idea how it's holding up today because she lost it. 🤣
CNC's are great and can do some great carvings but it takes a very long time.. I know I have a really nice onefinity cnc and do intricate carving can take 5-6+ hours to do. Lasers can do them granted not as deep much faster
I have a screened in porch. 20x20 feet. When it rains, some mist will come in. Can I keep and use the lazer there…keeping it covered up when not in use?😮
Hello friend, it's still not very clear to me, but what I understood was the following: You named two files, which were divided. In the first one, you printed a part of the pendulum (bottom), with two aiming marks, correct? But, the aiming selection is done only later, when printing the second file (top)? Thank you
Thank you so much! I've been looking for a tutorial like this forever on challenge coins! I have a Fiber on the way and trying to get the rest of my ducks in a row to be able to hit the ground running when it gets here. (I currently have a CO2 and a diode -- and about 20 years of design experience. : |)
Thank you! Glad you found it useful!
Always nice to see these kind of projects What im wrondering is (because I have no idea, just my gut) is if the "bouncing" noise on the "toc" (to the "tic) might be pointing towards an issue somewhere? I never heard it from any clock (3d printed or not) and feel like it should snap without it. I can see on the video where it comes from and maybe the vibration could be messing with the clock long term
There is an issue somewhere that I wasn't able to figure out. I believe there is too much friction in the drive train because I needed to use way too much weight for it to run at all. I think one or more of the bearings I used just aren't smooth enough.
I realized after I made this video it sounds a bit over the top but the truth is I really like this laser!
Is there one with bigger working area and more powerful ?
I'm not aware of a consumer version that is bigger and more powerful. There are industrial gantry fiber lasers but they run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. You can get more powerful galvo fiber lasers but you give up the larger working space.
@@LetsMakeAThingthanks, yes, already have three fiber galvo s, but for some specific applications I am looking to plotter style , hobby price, fiber . Maybe it is more likely to adapt a cheaper Chinese CO2 one with big area..
I have a 10 watt diode laser. I have it in a enclosure and also have a 2 in 1 smoke absorber attached to it. I know that's not enough, but I don't have a window near my laser. Is there something else I can do to help prevent the smell. For me and my family safety. Thanks in advance
I also have a air purifier,
I couldn't find your link for any "free" anything. Can you post it here?
Correct! DO NOT GET a cheap K40 laser! How do I know? I got one, of course! I added a height-adjustable, larger working are bed, upgraded the motherboard to allow using LightBurn, added a water flow indicator, and a couple other things I can't remember right now. It never has worked right. If I cut a circle, it's more of an oval. And it will never go back tot he same place twice. I started life working on cars, as my dad built custom cars, and I always helped with the minor jobs. I later went to a respected technical school and got a formal education in it. Later, I got a degree in computer science. So my mechanical aptitude and computer knowledge are excellent... I know how to upgrade a machine. It is just a piece of junk. I have two 10-watt diode lasers I'll use until I hit the lottery or marry a billionaire, so I can get a good CO2 laser. Those things are EXPENSIVE, if you want a good one! For me, it is still mostly a hobby, so I can't justify paying the price of a car for one. Thanks for the informative and helpful video. I always appreciate an intelligent approach to sharing knowledge. There's one guy who's always throwing his arms around for attention, and just looks like he's smoking something, which distracts from anything he's trying to say.
Thanks Miley! Really appreciate it!
This is a great summation!
Thanks Ry! I appreciate that!
Have you redone your voice ?
Which theta Lens did you use for color annealing?
Nice, would like tò put One of the se on my co2 laser together.. which Is the focal Lens lenght? Can you change It? I have galvo lasers too, the big advantage of plotter type Is that proportions should be perfect. So It needs Better linear guides on y axes too , Better homing sensors and at least 30w on it
I have an xtool F1 ultra - and I use their software~ can you use Lightburn with my machine? Also, I was , but I’m confused as to what level of Lightbourn software I need. Thank you.
I am not sure about using Lightburn with the F1 ultra. I have one on the way so I haven't had a chance to test it yet. If it does work with Lightburn I believe you will need the Pro version. The pro version is the only one that supports galvo fiber lasers.
@ ok great! So good to know, thanks!
Literally every single project I’ve ever done was an experiment. It’s the only way to do things!
So true!
Oh my goodness this video is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have a 13 yo also. I LOVED that you were working together. Mome/daughter (that's her spelling for me) and daddy/daughter projects are so special. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi. Can this trick also work in cutting clear acrylic?
Sadly no, you need a CO2 laser to cut through clear acrylic.
Thanks for making this video. Eye safety is foremost in laser use.
You're welcome!
Nice video! Took me awhile to figure the importance of this out!! I did find for me that going a bit further than a line was helpful. I ran the alphabet down the ramp, one line upper case and another lower case, just a line engrave. For me, it was easier to find the optimal distance.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
It's a benefit to save the machine settings to a file on your PC.
Always a smart move to back up your settings!
Hi friend, if i buy lightburn still will need a graphics software in order to precess images and then pasto to lightburn to cut or engrave? so far i got a sculpfun s30 22w thanks a lot!
Yes you will need something to preprocess your images. I recommend Imag-R www.imag-r.com/
Was this done with a MOPA fiber laser or just regular fiber laser?
It was done with a MOPA fiber laser.
I can't afford your course but it does sound good for all newbies, good luck everyone
Hello sir. Interesting video, I have been looking into one of these for my wife for Christmas. If you do not mind, I have two questions. One, what do you do as far as venting when using the machine? And the second question is, where did you purchase it from? Thank you.
I don't have this particular machine any longer but my venting method is still the same. I have a soft enclosure that is hooked up to 4 inch PVC dust extraction tubing. That runs to a 4 inch centrifugal fan that pulls air from the enclosure and pumps it out of the house through a vent in the wall. If you and your wife are brand new to laser cutting/engraving I recommend my Laser Learning: Diode Edition course. I cover all the information you need to know about getting started. It has a section that shows off how I vent the laser. Plus, I cover other items that you'll need to have to safely operate your laser. You can learn more about it here: letsmakeathing.com/laser-learning/
@@LetsMakeAThing thank you very much as we will definitely check that video out from you. You mentioned you no longer have that engraver,, would you still recommend it for starters?
@@bownutz76 Yes, I think the 20 watt is a great starter laser for the price. If you are looking to cut thicker material or engrave more quickly and have the budget, I'd recommend looking at the Longer B1 30watt. It has a larger working area in addition to being more powerful.
@ thank you very much
This isnt a mopa laser yeah?
The GI30 is a MOPA laser.
Warum nimmst du keine Reflektierende Folie? Sowas wie selbstklebende AluFolie oder Spiegelfolie? Das sorgt dafür, dass der Laser nicht durch geht und klebt die Teile bis zum Anbringen perfekt zusammen?
Any update on cutting aluninum business cards? Would be a shame and false advertising if it is can't actually do it as they claim it several times in their product page
Turns out their manual was wrong. According to the person I spoke with the max it can cut is 0.05mm metal. Nowhere near the .2 and.5mm the manual claims.
Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Reusing is great for testing
finally the discussion its finish, it is possible to engrave clear acrylic! thanks a lot for the viedo u have a new subscriber!
Glad you found it useful!
I can't find the link to the Free Laser Learning Foundation. Can you please provide the link? Are you no longer providing this free resource? I asked a month ago and have received a response.
Sorry for the delay, I must have missed your message. The e-book is no longer available.
it would be very neat to see if you can make a inlay of one acrylic into the other. id like to see how much to take off to make it fit right if it even can. very kool thank you!
I've got a video on doing inlay with wood, the same procedure should work with acrylic.
Man I wish I would've seen this video before buying a pack of acrylic to cut keychains! Was wondering why they didn't cut! LOL Looks like wood it is! Thank you so much!
Sorry you wasted money on the acrylic!
Can you tell us the original model kit then? I mean since sharing the model kit's plans would not be cool, maybe we can reinstate some of the money flow to the original creators
Sorry, I made this video a year and a half ago and I don't remember what the original model that was stolen was.
African Swallow or European Swallow?
Yes!
I’m just starting to play with slate so this was super-useful, thanks! (A tip on sourcing: I discovered that my local Michael’s art/craft supply store has nice 4x4” coasters in shrink-wrapped packs of 4 for only $5. No problems with coasters getting chipped or broken in shipping, and cheaper than most sellers on Amazon. I don’t know how widespread Michael’s is, but they’re a great source for lots of stuff if you have one near you.)
Glad you found it useful! And thanks for the coaster tip!
Are there any masks that are suitable. I'm good friends with a PPE company for tradespeople.
Anything to remove VOCs will help but I highly recommend using an enclosure and extractor fan.
It could be diode laser. Corning made 1062nm watt level single mode diode laser. More likely diode pumped solid state. Uses laser diodes to pump crystal for second harmonic generation. Fiber lasers use doped amplifying fiber on large spool. Just a guess.
Do u do this engraving for others? I want to hire someone for a small job
I do not take commissions. Sorry.
A&d
I just love your down to earth tutorials. Please keep them coming.
