Those Mazda owners may have "dry trousers and clean hands", but they did buy their cars in hopes of having rich experiences. I know there is _some_ value in getting your hands dirty and becoming more deeply involved in your sports car's ability to proceed. While I don't know how to quantify that value, I _do_ know that it rarely pays-up in hard currency. More like rose-colored memories...

I went from a '63 in white and '65 Corvair in repainted fire engine red to a '67 GT6+ in British racing green (but of course!) and really liked both the '65 'Vair and '67 Triumph. The '65 'Vair was heavily reworked to give plenty of power (although it started with a 180 HP turbo from Chevrolet) thanks to some great engine shop changes. The GT with its wire wheels and knock-off hubs looked sweet while always made sure you had something to do to it on the weekends. Although I loved driving it because it fit like a glove and the Abarth exhaust gave it a fine tune with the side-drafts wide open, the suspension and electrics were nightmares. The suspension cornered a lot like the '63 'Vair and once committed in a turn you dare not lift the throttle for fear of a snapping oversteer switching ends (changes made to the '65 'Vair made it a surefooted cornering gem). Still remember many a weekend chasing gremlins in the GT's wiring system and sometimes running parallel batteries to "smoke out the bugger". The '65 'Vair left such a lasting impression that I bought another one in my second childhood years - she's now a garage queen. Thanks for an interesting view of some British motorcars.

It's always the same story. Comparing a 1600 Spider with a heavily modified (standard was 94 bhp at the flywheel) MG. I'd love to be patriotic, and in isolation, the MGB was a fun toy but the 124 Spider is in a very different league.

I'm very grateful to you for this wonderful video. British roadsters were an utterly indispensable part of my happy youth, growing up in Dallas in the early 70's. I had many different models, including a Midget, a TR-6 and an MGC, among others. No matter if the weather was blazing hot, icy cold or torrentially wet, my top was always down and driving anywhere, anytime was a sweet adventure. Best of all, every girl I ever dated loved riding in those cars and adored me for sharing the fun with them. For me, the driving pleasure that even the humblest roadster provides, has always trumped that of any exotic coupe I've ever driven. In the case of the MGC in particular, one of its great virtues was the remarkable low end torque of that lovely 6 cylinder, which enabled it to easily out-pull many of the hopelessly anemic V8's of that era, whenever traffic lights turned green. The look of astonishment on the face of the other driver who thought they were dragging a lowly MGB was priceless. On the other hand, as you alluded to in your video the car was so nose heavy that it plowed like a John Deere tractor in the turns. Worse still, the pathetic brakes made it an absolute hazard to navigation. But, the exhaust note was glorious. And on the highway, the Normanville de Laycock overdrive made it a pure dream cruiser. Thanks again for this fine remembrance.

As a lifelong Triumph enthusiast and owner, with my first car being my late uncle's 1974 French Blue Dolomite 1850 with spoiler and overdrive, then a magnificent 1972 manual/overdrive 2.5 PI in ice blue that went like a rocket, thanks to Martins Injection at Stansted and latterly, Ken Mills and Steve at KMI, then a '69 new white TR6 and James May's sienna brown '71 2000 auto, - all mint cars, I have to say that the late 'J' registered end-of-line '70 MGC GT was the most surprising purchase. No rattles, a really strong seven-bearing engine that felt tight and indestructible, space aplenty and build and finish on a whole different level to the sports cars, including an immaculate low mileage V12 Series 3 E-Type I owned, which was utter rubbish and always breaking down. I grew to loath Jaguars of the BL era as nothing more than cheaply made and second-rate, whereas the MGC GT was a car that was a true GT with long journeys easily accommodated in it's stride with real comfort and a robust 'cruiser' upper-range performance. Mine was fitted with the rare high gear ratio differential, allied to the four-speed gearbox with a similar top-gear ratio as overdrive top on the man/o/d variant with only 4,000rpm at the ton. It is no mystery as to why these are considered the poor man's DB5/6. The interiors are superb and strong (no rattles), as are the cars themselves, - and the lines? So much more complete than the slightly awkwardly aeronautical-looking GT6 that subtracts from the Spitfire's simplicity with all those louvres. A nice car the GT6, but take an MGC GT out on a long run and you'll see why. The E-Type was a back-breaker in less than half-an-hour's drive with completely useless profile seats, in-spite of the V12 creaminess (when not out of tune) and ride quality; albeit with shed-like chassis and body flexing and rattling. The TR6, a nice compliant ride against body/chassis scuttle, but more than made up for with get-up-and-go performance right from the off as well as higher-up the range, but with very obvious rattles when the hood was up, but when down, sheer bliss, and with the best exhaust note of the lot! If I were to buy again, it would be the Triumph 2.5 PI saloon and the MGC GT.

At 20 years old got a daily 20 mile lift to work cross-country in a mgc, nice but not frantic. At 21 l had an immaculate mk3 gt6 with overdrive, the gt6 oversteered to the point of spinning me over the road but no damage done except front number plate and cracked plastic overrider. Absolutely beautiful car and as l was not fat me nor my future wife ever felt cramped. Overdrive was a dream also in a 2.5pi l had a few years later ( also a very well trimmed lovely car )

The Daimler Dart 252 was the compromise car that should have been the car that won. V6 engine was unbelievable. I'm a gt6 fan, triumph was perfect for tinkering with and easy to work on. The rotoflex is a pain but not a major issue. Mg's are adaptable and fun drives.

I owned a 1969 GT6+ and loved it. It was like driving a slot car on the road, the way it hugged the curves. I've never driven a more satisfying car for the sheer joy of it. But if you're a larger driver you're never going to be happy in it. If you're too wide or tall for the cockpit, you should find something else. But for me, it fit like a glove and drove like an extension of my limbs.

That GT6 is hands down the best looking car of the three. When I was 20 there was one for sale on the local forecourt for £700; I couldn’t take my eyes off it, but it needed some work and the insurance was high so ended up buying a 1973 yellow soft top Spitfire which was also a beauty. Every once in a while, a car manufacturer comes up with a classic masterpiece of design which they are never quite able to match again, and the GT6/Spitfire design is one of them. Triumph were on a roll back then, the Stag was another one, but I prefer the Spitfire/GT6 design even to that.
