A Week in Alaska Part One | Independence Mine - Wasilla/Talkeetna Train - Looking for Denali
In June 2024, I traveled to Alaska with my BFF Jen and her family. We flew to Anchorage then drove to Palmer, where we had a cabin for the week. On our first full day, we headed up to Hatcher Pass to check out Independence Mine. The next day, we took the train from Wasilla to Talkeetna, where we checked out the cute shops, met the cat mayor, and walked to the river to see if we could get a peek at Denali. Then we took a jet boat ride along the river before heading back on the train again. Great start to an amazing trip! To be continued ...

Boyne Mountain Resort SkyBridge Lights in the Sky | Boyne Falls, Michigan
Просмотров 4252 месяца назад
February 2024 - Drove north for the day with my mom, brother Rick, and son Zach to visit the SkyBridge at Boyne Mountain. The bridge was all decorated with Christmas lights, which was so pretty. We rode up the ski lift and enjoyed the views from the top. And there were plenty of skiers to watch while we walked across the bridge too. Besides the view, the craftsmanship of this bridge is worth se...

April 2024 - Took a mother/daughter road trip to Branson, Missouri and had a great time. Did a bunch of touristy things, which I don't cover in this video. But we also had some fun outdoor adventures that I wanted to share with you. The only thing I regret is not getting video of our Shepherd of the Hills zipline adventure. It was a bucket list thing for Mom, and we LOVED it! We did get a pictu...

In March 2024, while on vacation in Florida with family, my sister-in-law and I took off early one morning for nearby Myakka River State Park. We walked the Boylston Nature Trail and the Canopy Walkway then drove to Upper Myakka Lake and explored the Birdwalk before heading back toward the park exit and stopping at the bridge on the way out for lots of gator viewing. It's a beautiful park that ...

Started off Day 3 from our campsite at Trout Brook Pond and headed south. This was the day we hit the Niagara Escarpment on our way to East Lake Cabins. It was amazing. Day 4, we hiked south from the cabins with the goal of getting to our resupply car at M-123 Parking then hiking on south to camp for the night. But sometimes plans change. Stayed at Breevort Lake Campground for the night. You ca...

February 2024 - Met up with friends and hiked around Petoskey area for a couple days. Hiked between Bayfront Park and Welsh Road. It was bitterly cold and a challenge to hike on icy paths and difficult on my ankles to hike on hard crunchy snow, but it was a really beautiful section. I connected my miles with where I left off last year in that area and got a bunch of miles south of that point. Y...

Thank you so much for making the videos of our adventures!! You are awesome! So fun to watch and remember ❤
It was so fun to revisit the trip. Such great adventures we had. Part 2 coming soon! ;)
Thank you for sharing your trip with us! The view of Denali was really impressive! I remember standing on top of a 14'er in California and being glad to not have to climb another foot higher. I can't imagine going another 6,000 feet higher!
@@codyandargo906 We were just so happy the clouds parted for us that day! It wasn’t very promising when we first got there.
Lydia and I really enjoyed the Alaska video. So amazing. I am soaking up this information as we will be going the middle of August. So happy that you got to have this incredible experience
Lots more to share! Stay tuned. ;)
Utterly amazing adventure!!
It was so wonderful. :)
Lydia and I enjoyed watching your videos. She enjoys skiing and want to go there to ski and walk the bridge. What a great time to share with your family❤
Aww, I'm so glad. :) It was fun to visit. I think skiing looks like fun, but I think I'd rather go walk in the woods. ;)
So fun and... it's not that bad from the person who heights do not bother 😅
I know. It's definitely not easy for those who don't like heights.
So so funny. I am coming home right now from a Friday visit. Was looking for the snow. Never found it.
Haha! Yeah, took me long enough to finally share that little adventure.
Loved listening to you and your mom giggle and have fun. How special.
We have fun together. :) Glad you enjoyed watching our little adventure.
Soo...cool!! You've been so so busy this year.
It's been such a blessing to be able to travel so much. Stay tuned ... I've got so many more amazing trips to share. :)
Thanks for sharing! Check out my North Country Trail playlist to check out the Peter Wolfe Chapter in Michigan's Upper Peninsula!
Cool perspectives with the trees!
😂😂😂 is that a gator?!?!? 😂😂😂
Hahaha! It was so clearly a gator.
Lydia enjoyed the video too. She said she thinks she can do what we did. Apparently Your videos make it look easy. Cant wait for our next adventure
So nice to watch and relive our backpacking experience. Your watchers will never know how you suffered with those blisters nonetheless persevered and finished the hike that day. Amazing how one zero day had you back on the trail doing mych better. It was a challenge but also much fun. Sharing this experience with you and Sheri was the BEST!!
I have watched almost all your videos and I have to say I just love the fun you and your friends have together. It’s so charming and a joy to watch. And all the scenery you show is great too! Keep on hiking and sharing.
That was so sweet of you to say. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the videos. :)
What changed, do you think, that you had acquired so many blisters on this hike? Was it extra weight? Or an unbalanced pack? That's my problem. I forget to balance my pack and it ends up pulling from one side to the other. Congrats on the 100 mile completion. Neat to see the St. Ignace portion.
Oh, it was for sure newer hiking boots as well as the extra weight.
I'd bet that the Northern White Cedars are smaller than the Giant Sequoia, and the Cedars are much older. The Giant Sequoia grows much faster than Arborvitae. The Sequoia was planted on purpose but the Arborvitae are probably old growth.
I'm so disappointed. I missed the trillium season this year. But am enjoying your videos of them. Do you know if the escarpment you showed us was shale or limestone. Any evidence of bears digging for the ramps? Loved watching this adventure! I just bought a Grayl water filter as demonstrated by the fellow with the dog. Grayl also filters out PFAS and metals as well as the bacteria. Loving this video. Watching it in sections to make it last longer.
Walking through fields of trillium was so magical. It was amazing. According to what I read online, it's both limestone and shale. I don't know a lot about it, only that it runs across from New York and Canada and through that area of the UP we were in and down into Wisconsin. It's the rock formation that Niagara Falls goes over, which is really cool. And that Grayl filter was awesome. A little heavy for a long backpacking trip, though. Too much extra weight. But would be good for day hiking for sure. And I love that it gets so much stuff out of the water. Glad you're enjoying the video! One more to come in this series. :)
Cool highlights!
I couldnt help but go right to the the 2nd video. Poured a glass of wine and opened a " little bag" of Cheetos and kicked back to enjoy the video. The beauty of this section was magnificent. Im just blown away by our strength and charater. I love seeing the people we meet along the trail. Although we planned I love how we would change it up, like staying at Brevoort Lakewhich was so awesome. The simple things of flush toilets, picnic table and water . I just loved how you continued it with the rain from inside the tent sooooo cool.
It really was so beautiful through there. Especially walking through fields of trillium. So pretty. And the escarpment was very cool. Loved it. We definitely made the right choice staying at Breevort Lake and not among the swarms of mosquitos by the Carp River. No thanks. :) And it really was so fun meeting other hikers out there. Did not expect that, so it was nice blessing.
Wine and cheetos doesnt get any better.
At 2,26 is the spring for trout brook pond
We thought we saw some really clear water in one spot but it was far off to one side and not easy to get to so we weren’t sure. Does the trail go right past it?
Just to the right 50 feet
@@KevinHough-mo9eo Well, next time I'm on that section, I'll be sure to look harder. Thanks! :)
Nice fun video!
Thanks! :)
Hi 👋 awatha!! 😂
Hahahahaha! Yeah yeah!
Very nice video! I look forward to the rest of the installments. ;-)
You have been so busy accomplishing miles. That is amazing! I have rarely rarely seen other hikers in the sections I have hiked. One day the NCT will be taken seriously. You have encountered so many different sounds on this trip. Whipporwills, dinosaurs, trains.
Haha! Dinosaurs! And yeah, I think the trail will continue to grow and grow.
Nice video! I live in the Soo and have spent a lot of time on the section of trail you hiked in this video. You wouldn't believe how different it all looks now that the "green tunnel" mode has been activated :)
Oh yeah, I remember you. We met you and Argo on the trail on Day 4 of our hike and you filtered water for us. :) Watch my next video for your little guest spot on "Krista Hikes." LOL!
@@kristahikes yes, that was us! It was great to meet you three! I'll watch it with Argo so that he can see himself on the big screen!
So awesome to recap our backpacking trip. I remember the end of day 2. It ended just just as it should. Kinda like that last shot was the rain hitting on the tent. Lights out. YOU WERE DONE. You had nothing more to give. What you didn't tape was me out in the rain trying to hang my bag in the tree while it was raining and almost dark. That would've been a fun video to capture. We were all glad to be in our tents for the night after a long day of backpacking. Then we heard the sounds of something walking around our tent and I thought it was you, nope wasn't you. We hollered " go away". Later to find out it was a porcupine that visited us. Thank you for capturing our trip. Lydia fell asleep during half way through. I will watch the other half again with her
@@rondapeter2074 And I didn't know it was you out there hanging your bag. I thought someone else was there, and I was thinking "Who else is crazy enough to be out here in the rain like us?" and also "Go away! I'm too tired to deal with anything else." haha! That was the night I could not get my tent set up in the downpour. The poles kept falling and I was in tears trying to get that darn thing to stay up. If I could've captured that, it would've really shown the stuff we go through out on the trail. :) Glad you enjoyed the video!
After all my miles and nights on the trail in Michigan. Bin walkin was the best, kreed was such a good host. Buck and Jenny are nice too. They are now forever friends to me and some of the nicest trail angles. They have nothing but love and the deepest passion for the trail and the hickers that travel it. I was the first person to stay in 2024 ( trailhawk ) and I was thankful for it. Not only because its coolest shelter on the nct and apt, but buck shared so much knowledge of the trail and hardships of long distance hikes, plus I also made friends with some the great thru hikers that came before me like rue, soda and dosu the name a few. I will never forget my stay there and can't wait to return one day to start a thru hike of the nct from there but untill then,I hope to visit soon. I mean I still have a pair of old stinky boots for my Michigan section hike for the outhouse. Thanks again to buck, Jenny and kreed. I can put it in to words how much it meant to me and i'll never forgot my weekend stay. 5/5 stars would do again..Glad you got to experience it and congratulations and you accomplishment on the trail. Stay safe and enjoy the trail.
Such kind words about Bin Walkin. I'll make sure they see this. :) They really are the best hosts. Buck was so helpful with our recent backpacking trip in the UP too. He got out his personal maps from hiking that section and helped us figure out where to camp along the way. Such a heart for hikers for sure.
Lydia said cute doggy. You've come a long way with your hiking That 10 mi tuckered you out now you can do up to 20 mi
Oh yeah, that dog that followed us for miles and miles. Crazy dog.
That was the first hike that I got to meet you and it was love at first hike. Lydia and I enjoyed watching this Thank you
Yes! I remember thinking right away that you were so fun to talk to. Was such a great first hike together. And it led to so many more trail memories and MANY more to come!
The hike from Sturgeon Bay Trailhead north through Wilderness State Park to the Mackinac Bridge was a thrilling experience. Big Like ✨🥰
Such a touching video. Sharing the NCT LP completion with Kathy was so special. I loved our refections at the end and how inspiring we have all been for one another. It was so true when Kathy shared that hiking with one another has made it fun. I never thought I would experience anything like this and it has been so much more then I expected. Lydia asked a lot of questions. She said she wants to be there in my last hike when I finish the LP. She said that she would like to try a back pack with me and you Kris and that she would carry snacks and a couple toys to to play with and that she would share my tent with me. Your videos are inspiring this little 8 year old. 😊
This made me smile so big. We should for sure plan something so she can come along on an adventure with us and see if she likes it. :)
Wow that sign was huge compared to the normal NCT sign!
I know! LOL!
Amazing trail you hiked. So cool one of the girls reached a hiking milestone. I have stayed at that same hotel you stayed at. The balcony had a fantastic view of the bridge at night and it was clear enough we could see the lights twinkle on Mackinac Island. Krista, what is your total accomplishment for the lower peninsula?
Thanks, Dorothy! It was fun to be there with her to finish all her LP miles. I have hiked about 370 miles of the lower peninsula. So I've got a ways to go, but I'll get there. :)
That was one windy cold day!! For you to be bundled up you know it's cold. Lydia and I enjoyed watching this. Did I notice in the trail log that you signed " Double D's" under my name. People might get the wrong idea. Haha! For those who want to know my trail name is dawdle dwarf, sometimes referred to as double D's Thanks again Kris for the video. Always nice to watch
Hahaha! Double D! Yeah! 🤣
I can't wait to go back to the Bin again. Just to see some of the details that I overlooked. You did a great job capturing the details on the video that I don't remember seeing. Lydia and I enjoyed watching it.
Another dot connected. Go you!!
Thank you for your video's supporting the NCT. And you gave a great review of our Bin-Walkin
Well, it was a great place to stay, and you do wonderful things for the NCT!
Nice Bin!! That was definitely the truck we rode in... he definitely was our trail angel that night!😇 that section was hilly!
I thought that was the truck. LOL! Good times getting stuck in the dark. Thanks, All Trails app. haha!
What a great tour! I must have walked by this while hiking. What's the closest intersection?
It's not right on the trail, it's about 2 miles to the east near 64th street in Alto (south of Lowell). Bin Walkin has a FB page you can check out for more info. They love having NCT hikers stay there and even just stop by to visit and check out the bin if you contact them through their page. :)
Lydia wants to know what happened with the water bottle at the end
Lydia and I enjoyed watching this. I told her that you said in a comment that maybe she could hike with you and I sometimes and her comment was "would I get to be on one of her u-tube videos?" I said probably. She said " that would be cool." Didn't know you were having some knee issues too. Looks like that has gone away.
hehe! Lydia's so cute. Yeah, my knee used to hurt when I hiked but I haven't had any problems with it in a long time. I think it got strong the more I hiked. :)
Lydia and I watched this together as I tucked her in to bed. She said "Dani Krista looks like she is 30 years old." I said she has a daughter and son that are adults and is a Grandmother too. She then said " She sure looks young." She reminded me again how these videos relax her. She loved that I shared one of her jokes on the video.
Tell Lydia thanks for saying I look 30. hehehe! So cute. And I'm so glad she likes watching them. Maybe one day she will want to hike with us. :)
Finally Lydia and I got to watch the Muskalonge video. I remember those were some challenging trails. My knee was really hurting and by the last day I was dragging. You were a trooper. You had to deal with dehydration and the effects of the heat. You never wine or complain. You persevere. You're a very determined hiker. We all learned a lot about our bodies and what it needs. I think you learned the most.... She who sweats a lot. ❤
The hike where you learned that hiking boots might help support your ankles and reduce your discomfort.
Oh yeah! And they do!
Lol. "We're post holing". Winter, summer, looked like a great day to hike. Can't wait to see your summer adventures on the NCT. I'm getting closer to putting together a couple overnighters in a row to knock off more miles in a hike. I hate out and back hikes.
Yeah, that's been key to us finishing so many miles. Having at least two of us so we can stage a car at the beginning and end of the hike, and finding a campground, hotel, or airbnb somewhere we can split so we can stay in those areas of the state that are far from home.
Lydia and I enjoyed watching. We laughed at the outtakes when you burped
🤣
You do such a nice job on your videos. Lydia and I enjoy watching them together❤
Awww, tell Lydia I'm so glad she likes them. :)
Hmmm, the trail must have been re routed since I hiked that about 2 years ago. I don't recall hiking by Gull Lake. That weird turn style you had to climb over west of the bird sanctuary was a hard feat for me as well. But again, I didn't have to deal with the wire strung through it. Are all your southern miles connected now? Congrats for this long day of a hike. I hiked last week by Brohman (Pierce Dr) and came home with 5 ticks. You can bet I sprayed everything good for this week's hike by Nichols Lake.
It must have been a reroute. It's always changing and rerouting. I still have 13 miles left to do from Albion to Marshall and a small 3.5 mile section near Middleville and then my miles all the way up to the border of Barry County and Kent County will be done. Yay! I'm getting there. :) Yikes about the ticks. Ugh! I'm treating all my clothes this week with permethrin for sure! Enjoy your Nichols Lake hike!
Sound Effects in the house!!
@@jennifermiddleton8713 Hahaha! You know it!
You cut all my scenes! No footage of me heroically rescuing your car from the slush? :D
I didn't film any of that. LOL!
Oh, my...impressively messy looking snow & blow downs on that first section.
