I’m Alex, an avid climber, snowboarder, hikier, and road biker based in CA.
I spend my summers galavanting all across the Eastern Sierra Nevada bagging peaks, sending hard climbs, sleeping on the ground, and biking up hills. I spend many winter weekends skiing it up in Tahoe and fill in the rest of my time biking, hiking, and climbing around the Bay Area.
Stay tuned for trip reports, beta, the wonders of nature, and hopefully some inspiration. I’m just a regular guy who tries to get after it as much as possible, and I want to challenge you to get outdoors and have your own adventures.

Red River Gorge - Toxicodendron 5.11b
Great route at the Chocolate Factory in the Red River Gorge. A start for the Trad dads become a thin boulder problem to gain the hueco and a sit down rest. The remaining bolts are steep, with some big reaches to ok holds and an exciting finish. This is a worthwhile route, and a nice departure from the jughauling the red is known for.

It feels great to be back rock climbing in Yosemite! After a long summer of travel, I was able to squeak in a visit over a fall weekend. First Solo Backpack to Mount Wallace - Summer in the Sierra Ep. 60

Mount Wallace is a 13er located in the Evolution Region of the High Sierra. On a weekend in September, I set out by myself for an overnight to attempt the peak. The original plan of summiting 2 peaks was stymied by tricky conditions and lack of acclimization, but getting to the top of Wallace was a great reward for the efforts. #solobackpacking #highsierra #evolutions

Honestly, as someone who's led 5.12, I absolutely love Corrugation Corner. It's an absolutely beautiful climb, and reminds you that chasing ratings can just be dumb. It's all about enjoying where you are, how you're moving, and whom you're with. Love this climb!
Hey there Alex. I wanted to ask if there’s any books you use to guide you to the different peaks for class 3 scrambles in the eastern sierra? I recently watched your class 3 scramble peaks by difficulty video. I’m an avid rock climber and backpacker ready to progress in my mountain skills with some “easier” climbs like Mt Gould and Cloudripper. Mt Gould seems straight forward but for peaks like cloudripper some more knowledge would be preferable. Thank you👌🏻
Hello! thanks so much for checking out the vids, I appreciate the support. THE book the sierra is RJ Secor's High Sierra: Peaks, Passes, and Trails. It has some beta on 1000's of routes. I supplement the writing with Bob Burd's trip reports, summitpost, and RUclips, and it usually sets me straight. If you need anything else please let me know, If you can think of video topics that would be helpful to you or others I am open to that idea as well. Have fun out there!
What Sportivas do you have?
I have many La Sportivas. In this vid, I am wearing the TX Guides, but I have tried the Boulder X, TX 2, TX 4, and climb in Katana laces and Testarossa. The TX guides are better for scrambling than hiking imo and fit best if you have a narrow foot and are ok with a tighter toe box area. The TX 4's hike better than they climb because the toe box is wider and can't be laced as much so edging is compromised for comfort on the trail. Let me know if you have other specific questions and have fun out there!
I wanna do this some day. I live in Reno, so it’s just a couple hours away. I love the videos!! It’s nice to see stuff to do a couple hours away.
You totally should! There is a lifetime of adventures to be had in this area and you are very fortunate to live there.
Looks epic as hell!! The traverse looks a touch out of my current skill level. Planning a trip there this spring. Mine will depend on snow cover/temps... hoping to get truck to 9k feet, then snowshow to the lakes to make base camp. Would love to make it to blanca peak, see what conditions are like above 12k feet
Great video and super informative on us beginners to intermediate! Keep them coming!
I appreciate the support very much! I am working on a new studio and will have some more of these type vids coming out in the new year. If you have any video ideas or can think of something that would be helpful, please let me know.
What's the name of the lake at 3:52?
It's Robinson Lake hikeable out of Onion Valley in The Sierra
@@Wanksteez Thanks a lot!
....11b? Lots of ledges, jugs and rests.
Its not the easy moves that make a route, its the hard ones. There are plenty of mid 11 moves throughout, requiring 5.11 technique and 5.11 power to send.
First and last move cruxes? with a cave in the middle, nice!
You would be all about this route. The bottom move is a 5.9 smear you wouldn't think twice about, and the hard moves a re more vertical techy, but there is a pump that plays a role toward the top. Clipping is top is hard.
Live in Fresno, Dinkey Lakes Wilderness is beautiful! So many lakes in such a small area. Have you done Kaiser Peak in Kaiser Wilderness above Huntington Lake?
I haven't done Kaiser Peak yet, I'll look into it, thanks for the recommendation
@ you won’t regret the trip.
Great video. I made a second trip down to the Sierras and did Starr, Agassiz, Cloudripper & Vagabond mostly based on this video and had a great time. Any recommendations on a comprehensive Sierra guide book for climbs/scrambles? I have not been able to find anything from my own research. Thank you.
This is rad, I so glad you had a great time! The closest thing to what you are looking for is RJ Secor's Peaks Passes and Trails. It covers so much, meaning the depth on specific routes / peaks is low. Certain routes only get a sentence or two, and the consensus is that its a little sandbagged. Almost all the sierra peakbaggers and backpackers use it, I just also try to supplement with trip reports or photos from other sources. The other thing to consider are Bob Burd's trip reports, I just google his name and the peak and something will come up.
Amazing video! Really enjoy the wealth of knowledge you provide. I’ve been hiking in the Sierra for over 30 years but I’m not a peak bagger. Such a special place.
Thanks so much for the kind words, glad we both love this place so much.
Just did the “Hells Trail” portion up to Sawtooth Pass. It was some rugged terrain but a lot of fun. I should have summited the peak but I am a hiker/backpacker and not a climber at all. Any peaks you would recommend for a begginer or someone who’s not into actual class 3’s? Awesome video btw. Thanks for sharing. Such a pretty area.
Thanks for the report on Hell's Trail, glad it wasn't a problem for you. Recs for class 2's are a little tricky, as so many of them are not enjoyable, loose / sandy ascents. Agassiz and Bago come to mind as peaks that were enjoyable, and the summit views of each makes any sand slipping worth it. I have vids of both of those if you want to check them out.
@@Wanksteez I will def go check out those videos. Thank you.
Thanks!
You are welcome, hope you get to climb here sometime!
Thanks for the tour. I plan to do the traverse, so very helpful.👍
You are very welcome, its a fun one, be safe!
WOO! Cystal Crag! One of the best July 4ths I've had!
Thanks dude! I loved climbing this one with ya!
any idea about the current conditions of west chute up to cloudripper?
Unfortunately no, I would message / call Sage to Summit or the Gear exchange in Bishop.
It's stout for sure.
Agreed, the crux really comes down to endurance, the bane of any boulderer's existence.
A few comments: 1) Yes, no doubt you're from California! I somehow guessed that immediately! 🙂 2) The Mt Major trail was worked on heavily this summer. They closed the parking lot for all the equipment. 3) Sorry your hike in the White Mountains got derailed by rain. That was the story of last Spring, Summer, Fall, and even Winter - thanks El Niño! This summer, the last half was very dry! We need rain! 3) Lots of haze last summer. I still think it was Canadian fires - even west coast. Some unusual haze this summer, but not as bad. 4) Did you skip Mount Belknap and Gunstock? The two highest peaks in the range! (2300+ feet)? 5) Have you moved here yet? 6) Yes, there's the 48 4000-footers, but there many more - many lower peaks still have spectacular views: To round off the 48, there's a guidebook called the "52 With a View". For a challenge, you can look into the "Terrifying 25" (T25) list. Another author highlighted the 52 highest peaks (some overlap between these books) after the 48. 7) So many problems with your last statement! First of all, you did the Belknap Range, so hardly a taste of hiking in NH. That's where non-hikers go to hike! (semi-kidding - it's where I go on a weeknight after work, or if I only have a few hours, and I unfortunately live in southern NH). Let me break it down: STICKY: Yes, hiking here can be sticky in the summer, bugs go away by July. But late summer and is the best hiking is Fall. Fall foliage is amazing, temps are cooler, air is clear and visibility is much better. Hard-core folks even hike in the winter! (bring snow shoes, optionally skis) A LOT LOWER ELEVATION: Yes, can't argue with that - but you went to some of the lowest peaks in the state! Some 3500 footers will seem much bigger, but the 4000, 5000, and 6000 footers are a totally different game. Not even similar - insanely different, with crazy weather risks. THE HIKING'S A LOT EASER: Good grief - again, you did the Belknap Range. You should check out some videos in the presidential range, or the "pemi loop" (Pemigewasset Wilderness), or Hut Traverse. Hell - check out a video of someone climbing Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington, or Caps Ridge on Mount Jefferson. Check out Adam Hoyt's videos, or Amanda Douin's videos on those two. These two are on the T25 list mentioned above. THERE'S NOT QUITE AS MANY VIEWS: Wowzers! Crappy day! Again, you barely saw anything. I've never been on mountains out west - I can only imagine that they're more grand, but check out the views from Mount Washington, Franconia Ridge (Lincoln and Lafayette), Carrigain, Bondcliff, South Twin Mountain. The view at Mount Major is just a tiny little taste, and mostly a lake view, and with the haze, you couldn't even see the White Mountains off in the distance. You could BARELY see the Ossipee Range across the lake. You can do some google searches for the view from Mt Major to see what it would look like on a clear day, or from Gunstock (where there's a ski resort). Unfortunately, your hike was on a bad day, in an oddly rainy season. Sadly, you didn't get to go further North - for the best hiking you really need to be another 1 to 2 hours further north. If you move out here, I think you'll be surprised, and quite pleased by the challenges and views to be had. Side note: Check out "Grown Ups" with Adam Sandler: You'll see footage from the Lake Winnipesaukee in the 2nd scene - you'll notice Rattlesnake Island (the one that looks like an alligator), and then a quick view in the other direction looking up at Mount Major.
Thanks for the response, I appreciate your insight, and I will agree that I was a bit of a debbie downer, but I still stand by everything I said. I have done 12-20ish 4k peaks, including Franconia ridge, a one day presi, a winter ascent of Washington, as well as several 52 WAV's. I am by no means an expert but have certainly been around. Unless you are doing something massive like a pemi, presi, wildcat lopp etc, its not that challenging. Come out west where there is higher elevation so its harder to breath, no trails, and actual technical terrain. The hardest thing on the "terrifying 25" only come in at 3rd class, that's child's play compared to so many routes in the Sierra. I hope you get the chance to come out west, The Sierra or North Cascades are the real stuff as well as the Southern CO mountains, its a different animal. Enjoy hiking your trails, I do welcome the chance to come back, a one day Pemi is a dream.
@@Wanksteez Hey, that's fair. Thanks for the update. It sounded like you hadn't done any of the things you mentioned at the time of the video, and that your assessment was coming entirely from hiking Mount Major and some surrounding hills on a hazy/cloudy day. Maybe I misunderstood. That resume sounds like you have some serious NH street cred. I don't doubt anything you say about how extreme things can get out West - my point was only that NH offers much tougher hiking terrain (and higher) than what you showed in this video. But not high enough to have difficultly breathing! 😮 That being said, I spoke to someone who said she's from out west, but still struggled climbing Mount Jefferson: "I've been spoiled by all the switchbacks out west". Curios what you'd think of that statement.
Great video! We summited a couple weeks after you and saw your name on the register! Your AllTrails review was a big help for us too, thanks!
Nice thats rad, hope you had an awesome time!
What an incredible view!
Thanks, a the second most prominent peak in The Sierra you can see for miles, I highly recommend this mountain.
I hiked Mt. Baldwin on September 14, 2024 (three days before watching this video & commenting). 2:30 - I made the same decision as you and decided to go into (what appears to be) the exact same class 3 route (about 150 ft vert). At around 2:45 you say it looks 'relatively solid,' which may be very true in 2022. This was very untrue the day I climbed, the overwhelming majority of the rock was loose and crumbling around me. Most holds I tested (hand and foot) were unable to support my weight, many pieces of rock broke off with very little force, and the scree slopes were quite threatening and unstable. I agree with the rest of this video and highly recommend this mountain for the pretty rock deposit. For those interested, you can add variety to the trail by returning via Mildred Lake instead of Bright Dot Lake. Note- the use trail from the main trail to Mildred Lake does not continue from Mildred Lake to Mt. Baldwin, resulting in more off-trail route finding (see examples on peakbagger.com).
Wow. Nice views at the top. Crossing those bolders on the way up looked scary to me. It's great you recorded that part of the hike.
Getting to the top certainly makes it all seem worth it, especially a summit like this one.
Another great one! It’s been a good year with all the water and snow late in the summer!
Thanks I appreciate the support, and agree its been a great season. Snow was manageable, but its starting to get cold!
Excellent! I love that you name off all the lakes, surrounding mountains and such. Makes me feel like I’ve been there.
Thanks so much!!
Nice tour - always nice to be at the top of an Evolution Range peak - great video too - thx !
Thank you, your video was very helpful. I'm amazed you went straight up that choss.
@@Wanksteez actually did not climb the way you did - I went until under the Haeckel- Wallace col and climbed that talus. From how it looks - you climbed Wallace col - on a route I descended this spring on snow - and yep - I’m happy it was covered up with snow :)
Very impressive solo adventure and you always stay safe and have a positive attitude!
Thank you! The goal is coming back in one piece, and turning around is always the right decision.
I watch all your hiking/climbing videos but just found this one. Amazing hiking and scenery on these two peaks, I never get tired of those views and learn something on every adventure. Thanks a million for sharing them!
You are very welcome. I think Ritter is the coolest summit I have ever been on, if you get the chance to head into the volcanic range, do it.
Amazing! The snow really can slow you down
Thank you! I think it was a combo of only one night at elevation, waiting a bit to long for the sun (I really didn't want the puff in the backpack) and tricky cross country route finding. The ramps to get around picture peak were easier if you stayed high, and when I came around the corner I was almost too high, after climbing down, checking the time I knew both peaks weren't going to happen.
crazy there is that much snow back there in september. i was just there in late july and nearly everything was melted going up to langley. no snow near soldier lake at all
Langley being a lot more south makes the difference in most places for the snow (except Old Army Pass). Full disclosure, this was actually last fall (2023) which was a big winter. I think I only went out twice all season without my axe that whole year.
Umm… It’s pronounced Mo-no
A great peak. Been up there 2 times.
That's rad, this is a great one, big mileage and scenery, all while being not too difficult.
@@Wanksteez I agree. I've done Langley 4 times and Cirque is almost as fun, with no people.
if you've ever peaked matterhorn in california what would you rank it?
I did Matterhorn from Horse Creek Pass, video will be coming out sometime in the spring I hope. What do you mean by rank? Difficulty or enjoyability? Difficulty I would give it 3rd class for accessing the final ridge, I looked all over and didn’t see anything that kept it to second class. In terms of enjoyability, I wouldn’t put it super high. From the pass to the final ridge was a SLOG through some very loose stuff, with less than 100 yards of actually fun solid rock. The summit is nice, but nothing on Agassiz or Middle Pal. I am not itching to do Matterhorn again.
@@Wanksteez sounds like an uncomfortable scramble. i haven’t peaked anything in the sierras yet but plan on going to matterhorn this week. you said that it’s not the most enjoyable scramble but im pretty dead set on trying it. is it a reasonable endeavor for someone like me who is just getting into hiking up mountains?
@@gromgang548 How new are you to this? If you are just getting into hiking mountains, I would say it is not a reasonable endeavor. The gain is pretty big if you are trying to do it in a day, and the altitude will not be doing you any favors. When we did it we weren't acclimated, and moved less than a mile an hour from the pass to the summit. The trail is a little tricky to follow in many places and you can make your life much harder if you end up off trail. If you are going to be in Bridgeport, I would say Mt. Dana or North Peak are more reasonable, I have vids of both, but didn't do the hiking route on North Peak. Dana is prettier but North peak is more of a challenge if thats what you are looking for. Be safe with whatever you decide.
@@Wanksteez thanks for all the info! Despite your advice I did end up hiking up matterhorn and got to the top 😭. The wind was pretty damn nuts though.
@@WanksteezAlso I’m thinking of quickly doing mount star before i start college next week but I can’t find any routes on alltrails. Where should I find a good route that I can follow online?
Thanks for the video. Doing it this Saturday
Nice have fun, you will rock it!
Beautiful hike!!
Thanks, it really was.
What date did you hike this? I'm heading out Mono pass trail tomorrow - wondering where/if I'll encounter any snow! I hiked Mt Data ~35 years ago - looks like the trail has really evolved since then. There was barely a discerible trail back then - especially at the top.
This was actually last summer, sometime early aug 2023, moderate snow year with some lingering patches. I haven't actually been in the sierra since mid July, but snow was low and melting fast. The JMT beta is no need to worry about snow / bring traction and I believe that.
I was up there Aug 26th and the trail was snow free.
Looks like you brought some ropes but didn’t end up using them? Trying to get a feel for what protection might be needed on this route, if any.
That is correct. If you saw the previous Emerson video, we got into some trouble and were happy to have the rope so we brought it out for round 2. The crux is 5.4 like 30 ft above the ground and is shown at about 1:22. The rest of the start is low 5th but since you are in the waterfall it doesn't feel exposed, which is nice. The middle rages from class 2 to a few class 4 moves and the end is the best 4th class ridge climbing I have ever done, with big exposure and some fatal fall potential. If you think gear would be needed, I would bias small to medium pieces, smaller ones will be nice for the first section and then some bigger cracks appear on the final ridge. Hope this goes well for you, its classic for a reason.
gould to me was so annoying because of all the sand and everything was so loose
How many other sierra peaks have you done? I feel like Gould is pretty par for the course. I don't enjoy it either, but thats the tax you pay to get to these beautiful summits.
The clouds make the sky and elevation so dramatic! What a fun adventure, thank you for taking us along!
Thanks so much, this was an amazing day on an amazing peak!
I’ve been considering hiking Dana for decades. Your video tells me it’s time to get my butt up there. Especially since I’ll be 70(?!?) in November.
Get it get it, thats amazing! You can totally do it, while its steep and high elevation, the small mileage means that even if it takes you some time an early start will get you back to the car before dark. The views of Mono Lake really are special.
Did you need a reservation at that entrance point?
If you want to cross into the park, you do need a reservation any time reservations are required. That being said, there is ample parking outside of the park boundary very close to the trailhead. If you are on the east side by Lee Vining, this is a great hike to do that wouldn't need a reservation.
6:13 view of the chute looking like a scene from lion king 😮 rocks everywhere. Glad to see you and Steph climbing up to get that Birds Eye view of Mountains…FOR DAYS!
Thanks so much! Hope you are doing well, we miss you.
Can you operate a drone providing these destinations are outside the National Parks? Thanks
That's a great question, something I have looked into, and found a mess of regulations. My understanding is as follows: Even though some of these peaks are not in SEKI national park, they are all in designated Wilderness areas where it is illegal to take off, land, or operate a drone from. I do not know the exact regulations for non-Wilderness lands within the national forest or BLM boundaries, but it would be pretty hard to get a drone near most of these peaks.
When did you do this hike because there is a lot of snow?
I did this June 19th 2024. It was a normal snow year, I only spiked up for the 150ish yards at the start, wasn't too bad especially compared to the historic snow we got the season before.
Another fun hike with spectacular views on the summit. Thanks to you both for taking your fans along on this hike, I loved it!
You are very welcome, I hope you get a chance to get out sometime and experience these places for yourself!!
I love scree skiing! The best ever is the Cinder cone in Lassen
Me too, so much fun! I haven't done Lassen but I bet it would be amazing. That volcanic stuff is so brutal on the way up and so fast on the way down.
Was the tarp mandatory? Never seen that before.
They recommend it highly early in the season and it becomes less important as it gets later. Apparently as the marmots wake up from hibernation and are trying to fatten up coolant and brake hoses are the dish of choice. Some people don't do it for day hikes and that was initially my plan, until I spoke to the ranger who said a car had recently been towed out. The tarps are free and first come first served, it took less than ten mins to wrap it up, not worth the risk in may and June in my opinion.
I subscribe, I am a fellow hiker
Thanks, I really appreciate it, I'll check out soe of your stuff as well.
MT Tam has been on my list for a while, your video shows all the trail options. This is great info for me when I go there. Great job, thank you!
You are very welcome, I hope you can get to Tam, its one of the most amazing urban peaks in the country. You flatter me, but I have not hiked all the trails on the peak, there are many hundreds of miles all over the mountain. If you want to send me the stats you want to hike, I could try and out something together for you.
Cool video, I appreciate the insights
Thanks so much, I hope you can get out there, develop some skills, be safe and get to some amazing places!!
