I grew up in the eighties, reading duck comics, ages after Carl Barks had retired. It's funny that as young as 7 or 8 I already discovered that there were several versions of duck characters, and one version was far better than all the others.... The Good Duck artists still got recognized by new generations of children, long before we ever learned his name..... I also love that the fifties stories still didn't feel outdated in the eighties.. sure the cars and trains were a bit old, but in general the world still was very believable! An amazing feat!

I read Barks" stories as a kid in the 1970"s. However, DuckTales in 1987 renewed my love of Donald. and Scrooge!

I love this man. The reprints of his stories by Gladstone publishing in the late 80's kindled by fondness for writing and art -- which shaped my career and life today. He's a legend. And he is far less well-known that what is merited. When you've invented a character like Uncle Scrooge and you're the primary influence for people like Spielberg and Lucas, you know you're more than a muse -- you're a part of literary history.

He was hired by Disney at 33, invented Scrooge McDuck at 46 ... and had still 20 years ahead to create extraordinary stories that would inspire Don Rosa's glorious oeuvre .... I love stories about late bloomers. I'm 33 myself with so many deceived dreams and a talent for drawing and writing ... maybe this should help me to pull myself together and find the proper path to my life.

Fantastic. Unca Carl was a genius, both in terms of writing and illustrating. His work is what drove me to eventually become a writer myself. We are blessed to have artists like Don Rosa who have been able to carry on his legacy and quality. It's a shame Mr. Rosa is not more appreciated.

@akhicks Sorry, I know this post is old. But, I thought you might like to have things cleared up anyway. Carl Barks didn't create Huey, Dewey and Louie. Al Taliaferro did. But, Barks was the one who turned them from mostly brats into Junior Woodchucks which is why their picture appears in scout uniform.

Why would april, may and june get billing over huey, dewey and louie ("many others..."), the nephews who are the crux of so many of cb's stories? That's just weird.

Barks is far bigger outside the USA.. most europeans have never heard of Kirby, but Barks is an icon. Superhero comics are not very popular over here, if it wasn;t for the avalanche of super hero movies in the past 20 years most people wouldn't even know the main characters (except the most famous ones like Superman and Spiderman)

@charmy97 There's a lot to choose from. But I think Ghost of the Grotto, Vacation Time (1950), The Old Castle's Secret, Christmas for Shacktown and Only a Poor Old Man would be my Top 5.
